"Roses for Mama" is a historical romance set in western Canada during it's pioneer period. It's a part of a series, but each book stands alone and is about a totally new group of people.
This novel was a fun, short read. There was enough setting and historical detail to create a somewhat vague background for the events. The story was mainly about Angela struggling to deal with the pressures and doubts of raising her siblings while fearing her older brother will leave her to handle this alone...ye...more

*3.5 STARS.

I probably never would have picked this book up on my own. For one, the copy at our library is so mangled and tape-covered that it just makes me sad. For another, I did not think I was in a Christian historical romance mood. Lucky for me, my friend Lynne is absolutely crazy about Thane, the older-brother's-best-friend-turned-love-interest in this book. She reminded me that I should read it. So I picked it up. A sweet, poignant, story of a family of siblings who's parent's die and leave the two oldest to finish caring for and raising the three younger when they aren't very old themselves.
It goes through the doubts, fears and struggles of siblings vs parents, and hit me in a very real way because like the Mother (though not dyeing) I have been bedridden for four years now and my children starting at ages 13,9 & 8 had to step up to the plate and take over my cooking and chores. And now at 18, almost...more

I needed a quick read, comforting good story, and I almost always find that with Jenette Oke's Christian fiction. This was not a disappointment, in fact I realized that I'd read it before, but it's one I mostly enjoyed. I love the advice she quotes from her mother, and will put one of them up where I can see it often, "Never desipse a task...you're either creating something or making something better." I appreciate that.

I read this book years and years ago and just recently picked it up again - finished it in a day of easy reading while chasing a toddler around the house.
This is a light romance, it's more a story of belonging to a family and the triumphs and struggles that go alone with it. The protagonist has been left to raise her brothers and sisters on the farm, in the west, after losing both her parents. This is a story of her trying to find a life for herself while still upholding those responsibilities....more

This book is GREAT!!! It tells about how a brother and sister have to take charge of their three younger siblings after their parents die; even through this tragedy the kids are able to make the best of it, even create a memory book to keep the memory of their parent's alive and let the younger ones experience what they missed. This book is not a sob story, at least not completely; it is very romantic; you NEED to read this book!

I got this book for my 12th birthday, read it then, and have read it countless times since then! Love it! Beautiful, feel good story. All Janette Oke books are set in the frontier west, and she's a christina author, so there is always a chapter or two woven throughout the book that read a little more like a sermon (I'll be honest- I don't love those chapters, I usually skim to get on with the story), but I come away feeling so inspired after reading her books. And there's always a beautiful love...more
I liked this predictable story probably just because it was a deviation from non-fiction,
which I've been reading so much lately. Easy reading; parents die & two older siblings
are left to care for the three younger siblings. Older daughter becomes engaged to a rich
newcomer in the area, only to find out they are not compatible. The man who has always
loved her, unbeknownst to her, of course, finally wins her as his bride in the end.

I read this multiple time in middle and high school. I read it a few years into college and I can't believe how I much I like it when I was younger. It is by far not one of Oke's best books, but I must have seen something in the story when I was a youngster that I do not see now, because I really used to love it. Therefore, it gets three stars instead of just two.
3.5 stars, a quaint, fun little read like all of Jannette Oke's books. This one is about two siblings in their teens who have to raise 3 other siblings when their parents die- they feel the responsiblity but ultimately try to balance this with the need to live their own life and make choices in education and marriage that will make them happy.

What a lovely book. This is the first book that I read by this author and it left an imprint on my heart that I'll not forget. It is an easy fast read that will pull at your heart strings. I recommend that you read this book with a box of tissue close by.
It has been three years since their parents death. Seventeen year old Angela and her nineteen year old brother Thomas work hard to keep the farm running and raise their three young siblings, but are their efforts enough? Angela worries that she will not train her charges as well as her mother would. When a wealthy man comes to town and begins courting her, Angela dreams of a new future for all of them. But when Carter realizes she plans to bring her family with her, he calls of the wedding. Will...more
This is a cute book--wholesome and homey. It's been a long time since I read it, but I read it a couple times.
This was a fast read! I was left wanting much much more from the story. I thought the characters were fun to watch throughout. I would recommend this book to any of my friends but I think a better generation of reader would be a much younger group. I think I would be perfectly comfortable reading this to my 5 year old. I loved Carter, then hated him and in the end thought nothing of him. I thought Thane a bit weenieish but then he steps up in the end. Good book for young readers. Possibly not on...more
