I've read this thing cover to cover like 10 times. Don't know where'd I'd be in my classical music knowledge without it. Great reference.

I am far more impressed with this book than The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection. The entries manage to be detailed yet concise. The book could be daunting for a beginner, and it is not really a cover-to-cover sort of read (although it could be), but the best part is that there is an associated web site maintained by Naxos with an impressive selection of samples of many of the works mentioned in the book. Sadly, the Naxos companion site requires Flash to play audio, so doesn't work on modern browsers (to put it trollishly).
