The DOWN BY THE COOL OF THE POOL helps children develop language skill. There are rich vocabulary which are flap, wiggle, stamp, bound, frisking, prance, drummed, capering, topple, splash, and ripply etc in this book. Also, many animals come to the pool, and enjoying dance together whatever they are topple in the pool. If children read this book, they would learn many things from this book which are social-emotional skill, language skill, and physical development skill through activity.

This story is pure fun, animals of all kinds, such as, frog, duck, pig, sheep, cat, dog, cow, horse, and donkey, dancing in their own way having a great time being together. The emphasis on the action words is a plus, because when you read it you actually can feel the movement being portrayed. The illustrations are animated and very self-descriptive. The story is an action poem which is a great book for preschoolers.

The large and extremely colorful book caught and held my kids attention from the moment I walked it through the front door. They were begging and begging for me to read it! They were not disappointed. The exaggerated dance moves of the colorful characters were fun and engaging to read. In no time the children were imitating the moves of the animals, and anticipating the next words and sounds. The rhyming phrases added the final musical touch that tops this book off at a five star review!

This is a great book to use in a unit about animals. The short sentences with rhyming words will make it an appropriate book for 2 to 3 year olds. Children might even be able to catch on to the words because of how short the sentences are. The fiction about the animals doing different dances makes it a fun and humorous experience. I could use this book for music/movement and language and literacy as well.

Down By The Cool Of The Pool fun story full of movements. This is a story of an animal party down by a pond. The pictures are very vibrant and I think the children will enjoy looking at all the different movements the animals are doing; they will love reading along and having their own animal dance party. There is also good vocabulary and rhyme and repetition throughout the book.

This is a book about different animals who are all doing their own dance. They are having a great time even though all of the dances are different. The frog and the duck are the first to start the dance. They all end up tangled together and fall into the pool but they don't care. The repetitive verse is easy for the children to learn and participate with the reader. The illustrations are colorful.

This is a fun silly book that talks about dancing and acting silly like all sorts of animals.
Learning Extension: In class, the children would dance together. First we would read the book normally, then the second time we read the book, the children would "dance" like the animals in the book. (Ex: flap, wiggle, stamp, bound, frisk, skip, hop, prance, etc). We would do this over and over, each time going faster until we can't go any faster. This would probably become a game, and once you fall down...more

This book showed great vocabulary, rhyme and repeptition, allilteration and onomatopeia. I loved this book and reccomend it to anyone with children or a classroom. The dancing and upbeat of this book helps children stay interested and makes it fun for them.

Tony Mitton uses describing words such as flapping, flopping, splishing, splashing, wiggling, waggling, and hopping. There are vibrant and entertaining illustrations throughout the whole book. This book would be a great interactive book for children to participate with.

This book is very entertaining and filled with rhyming words that can help children easily recall and repeat. Also the different animals having various expressions that children can chime in to imitate is great! Using this book would help in having children act out the story to discussion on the different animals.

Down by the cool of the Pool has very colorful illustrations. The animals in this book also have human characteristics. They also are still acting like animals. The words on each page are sounds that the animals are making. This book would be fun to read to a first grade class and see if they can make the same actions and sounds as the animals do. For a lesson I would have the children make up their own noise. They can make any noise they want and they get to walk around the room and can only ta...more
This book has a lot of rhyming and alliteration. Catchy words and a easy book for children to follow along too. Plus this book introduces a lot of animals so that children can learn about different animals. Cute book for children to read.

Very cute book. I love the rhyming words and vivid illustrations. From a child's point of view, I understand why this book makes children laugh. The word play and actions are funny, enjoyable, and fun to say out loud. I find myself reading this book out loud and playing with my voice in a sing-song way.
Learning extension: What is onomatopoeia? Learn what onomatopoeia is and find examples in the book (splash, flap, drumming, etc.) and introduce new sounds (buzz, hiss, etc.)

The book has a musical rhythmic language which makes it interesting to young children. The illustrations are vibrant and makes the children want to move like the animals.Children can join in the repetitive language too.
Learning Experience:I will play quiet music and invite children to hop like a frog, flap like a duck, wiggle like a pig, stamp like a sheep, prance like a pony as I call out the name of the animal. When the music stops children must freeze till the music starts up again.

This is a colorfuland rhyming book which will keep the kids engaged. The book also has simple sentences that will be easy to read to younger children. I like how they all have a cute little dance and even though the frog gets tangled up with another animal, it just keeps on dancing. Recommend to children 3-7
For a learning experience, I would read the book and have the children do the dances of each animal as I read the story. Also, book can be used for story ordering.

I do like this book because it is very descriptive and has a lot of action words that the children can repeat and act out. This book is great for sequencing and also good for movement with children. The book is colorful and will keep the children interested.
Learning Experience:
For this book the children will re-tell the story using puppets. The children will be able to add new parts to the story but will be able to keep the concept of the story.

This book is extremely interactive for young children. A great way to get kids moving around and having fun in the classroom. I love each animals own unique movement down by the cool of the pool. This book is great for listening skills and comprehension.

This book was fun and colorful. Students will be able to hear rhyming, read along with you, or get up and act out the moves. This book would be fun to read in the morning to get the children awake and stretched. I would read the book and allow the kids to do the moves that the animals make. This book has repetition in it so children would see that afer while, they would know what I will say next.
This book is a fun exciting book that allows the children to experience rhyme and rhythm words. Also it can be a great book when the children are learning about frogs, and what happens down by the pool. The book has bright exciting pictures to captures the children interest and curiosity. The children can also read along easily if the book is repeated to them.
This book was fun and entergetic. Fun Fun Fun to read. Children can learn to use their imagination of what it would look like if animals to dance. Children can learn about social skills of getting along and interacting with other.
Extension: A fun activity would be to allow the children to prentend to be what ever animal they choose to be and make up silly dances.

Obviously this is a great picture book for children and uses all sorts of onomatopoeia's. It's just an all around fun book with very right illustrations to keep the children engaged.
Lesson: I would have the children use all different kinds of onomatopoeia's, even if they made up their own to introduce new animals/characters into the book.

This is one of my three year-old grandson's favorite books that he reaches for quite often. He just about knows it by heart. The illustrations are brilliant in color, and we have fun looking for the small bugs hidden on the pages. You must read it with much enthusiasm or you will not do justice to the tone of the story. Go ahead, have fun!

Perhaps the worst read aloud book in existence. Despite its potential (colorful illustrations, promising first page), none of the three highly literate adults who valiantly attempted to read it could conjure the rhythm of this book. Jeff Woods' beep-boxing/poetry-reading-at-local-coffee-shop version was the best attempt; it still failed miserably.
I love reading this books to my children. Reason is that because this book hold great excitement for the children in class. They mimic what the farm animals are doing and also this book has a wide variety of rhyming words. The illustration of the book was very colorful and vibrant, it also hold the children's attention.
I felt the rhythm problems when I read this through, but then I got really excited about doing all of the actions with the kids. Then, I read the reviews here and the consensus is that the rhythm issues kill it as a read aloud. I'm going to give it the old college try and see how it goes, I might edit this review later.
This is a Kohl's cares for kids book. Three books with the illustrations of Guy Parker-Rees can be purchased for $5.00 each. Awesome price for wonderful books and it helps kids. It's a win-win. Very colorful fun illustrations and great text. A lot of the sounds of various animals are repeated. Fun to read!
