I read this aloud to my kids (5 and 3) over the course of several days, and we all enjoyed it. The book contains true stories told by a veterinarian from about eighty (?) years ago or so. I was actually surprised that my kids liked it because the stories are very simple with not a lot of action. For example, one story is just about a dog who never barks; then once he sees his companion from his puppy days, he lets out a bark of joy; and then he doesn't bark ever again.

We are homeschoolers that use many ideas from the Charlotte Mason style of teaching. This book was my daughter's assigned reading for literature during 2nd grade. She is a bit behind in her reading skills, so this would probably be more 1st grade reading level for most Charlotte Mason homeschoolers. She would read for 15 minutes each day and then narrate orally to me what she had read about. It took her about three weeks to complete this book.

I grew up watching All Creatures Great and Small on PBS, and I started reading Herriot's books shortly after that. I love them all, and when I discovered this book shortly after our first daughter was born, I was thrilled. Herriot's trademark humor, warmth, and honesty shines through every one of the stories, and the language is simple enough for children to understand without being in any way dumbed down. I'm reading through this now to my four-year-old and three-year-old for bedtime stories (t...more
This is an outstanding collection of eight of James Herriot's true stories about his life as a veterinarian in 1940's Yorkshire, adapted for children and beautifully illustrated. Adults who enjoy Herriot's memoirs (begun in All Creatures Great and Small) will love introducing their children to his life through this wonderful collection. The book stands well on its own, however, with a slightly higher reading level than most books of this genre. The stories really capture country life during this...more
We first began reading this lovely book to our daughter when she was 3 years old. In retrospect it sounds so young, but I wanted her to learn about the natural world and to develop curiosity and compassion for all creatures, great and small. I wanted her to hear the richness of the author's voice narrating the richly described countryside or animals of the countryside. Our daughter is a huge animal lover, naturalist, and passionate learner about the natural world. Oh, she's also one brilliant re...more
Ryan received this for Christmas and I think it may be his favorite gift. We have read all of the stories several times already and he is completely enamored of the book. There are 8 long-ish (for a 4 y.o.) stories in the treasury. As the subtitle promises, the stories are warm and joyful, with wonderful illustrations and gentle, descriptive language. A great collection for an animal-loving kid.
This book turned out to be a delightful collection of stories! I read this to my kiddos as part of our homeschooling curriculum, otherwise this wouldn't be a book I would have picked up on my own at the library. My daughter and I we so glad that it was included in our curriculum once we started reading. Goes to show that it is great to stretch our 'comfort zone' in all areas of life :)
4.5 stars. The kids and I listened to this on tape, narrated by Jim Dale who did a fabulous job. We enjoyed all these sweet tales of farm animals. I remember especially loving the story of Moses the Kitten when I was a child. I could picture the illustrations of the book that I read when I was young as we listened. It also reminded me how much I love cats. Beautiful stories!
This is a charming picture book. I bought this for Rebecca for Christmas but chickened out of giving it to her because of the lack of glitter and stickers. However, she found it on the shelf, and loves it. Last night she read all the stories and then requested that I read one to her before bed tonight. She loves that these stories are real. I enjoy these stories, too.
I'm not exactly an animal person, but these stories are great anyway. My kids most loved the story about the kitten found in the snow on Christmas Day. They are all really sweet true stories from James Herriot, a country vet. I read and enjoyed his All Creatures Great and Small series many years ago and was glad to find this introduction to him to share with my kids.
Another Jim Dale audiobook. He is always fabulous and the material was great as well...if you have any animal lover children, they will enjoy these stories. I was sorely tempted to listen to the books he wrote that aren't necessarily for kids although a lot of reviewers say there is some questionable language. Putting them on my list to read before the kids.
I checked this book out from the library about a year ago and returned it without reading it. About a month ago we got the audiobook from the library (read my Jim Dale) and IT IS SO GOOD. Lia wants to listen to them over and over again. The story about Debbie the little tabby cat got me all teary eyed. I'm not even an animal story sort of person!
I've never read the adult versions of these stories but this collection was lovely. We're animal people and the stories really resonated with us. I love the Christmas kitten and the Blossom stories the best, I think - although they both made me weepy in parts. If you love animals, you'll most likely connect with these stories.
James Herriot in picture book format? Yes, please! This is a collection of all of Herriot's children's books, and it's great.
The first book is a little too word heavy for a picture book, but he learns his lesson quickly and book 2 is better.
The last book is written from the perspective of a lost lamb, detailing the lamb's adventures. It was my least favorite because it deviated from what Herriot is genius at: a vet telling his stories with love, compassion, and humor. (And it was a little too...more

We just finished this today. The kids and I really enjoyed it. The stories are well-written and entertaining. And of course, they were all about animals which they loved.
Some of the stories were a little sad, all had a happy ending though. We laughed really loud with some and got teary-eyed with others.
I liked the paintings in the first part of the book better than the second part, but even then the later paintings were good, just more of the "fuzzy" style.
