What to do when we can do nothing. And well nothing precisely. This family must lodge an officer. There is the father, undoubtedly soldier of the First World War. His daughter occupy of the house. We imagine the dead mother and the brothers in prison or dead too. They remain silent.
The officer is perfect. He has a perfect education. He is perfectly cultured, we imagine he's beautiful. It is the son-in-law ideal. Is the girl sensitive to her charm? They remain silent.
So the officer speaks, he tel

Denso e immobile.”

description

I read the English translation. I'm sure if I read the French version I would give this 5 stars.

This is an amazing story with a different viewpoint specially because one doesn't accept common humanity or collaborate it with the German soldiers in WWII setting. The story is about a German soldier who loves France, its culture, and loves everything passionately. But he is in France as the conqueror/ the enemy.

Best part about this novel is that we get to witness France's WWII occupation through th

This book is, in my opinion, a perfect representation of people during the war. The way their relationships were defined by the drama and chaos in the world. The german soldier opens up to his hosts and is very kind. The hosts, the uncle and niece, are hostile and quiet and sometimes a bit rude. I mean I understand completely why they are the way they are, but I have to admit it was very frustrating, having these two sides of a war in a household and act the same way the actual war is; Silent (t ...more

To my shame I simply can't be bothered to read this. I started it and in a paragraph I was bored witless. Maybe I'll read it one day, but at the moment it just has zero appeal to me.

I picked it up because I happened to start my last year's summer holiday with a stopoff in Vichy, and it made me want to learn something about the French experience of WWII. I saw a great 4-hour (or was it 6?) documentary, The Sorrow and the Pity, and I bought this. But truth is I'm not a big reader of traditional f

Eurk, I'm so disturbed by this one, and I'm told it's precisely what a good book should do: make you question, think, explore, suggest...That it does. But still, it's not satisfactory. Here's the thing:

The philo' aspect is brilliant: deep, uncertain, it lets you think it over; in fact, it demands that you pause and think it over.

The story aspect puts me off, and on purpose too. The weird non-love/love/emotion story going out between the niece and their hum! "lodger" makes me wanna puke; it's ju

Short stories set in occupied France during the Second World War...

I feel like I ought to write this review en francais, but I'm much better at reading it than writing it. Actually, I find it frustrating reading in French because I cannot quite get the personal involvement and appreciation of language that I do in English. However, there were moments that stood out here, particularly in "La Marche a l'etoile," which maybe was easier to read just because it came at the end of the book... I found

It is a very interesting story that can analyzed deeply. The hints about the French Revolution are very subtle and the language has to be analyzed in detail.

Werner Von Ebrennac is a Nazi official staying in the home of an old man and his daughter. Every day, he tries to speak to them, only to encounter silence. The story revolves around this silence of both the old man and his daughter, and the Von Ebrennac's constant attempts to overcome it. Every time I read it, I am amazed at how well Vercors is able to craft his characters into such dimensional people in so little time. I must admit, I am always overcome at the scene when Von Ebrennac finally re ...more

Vercors was the pen name of Jean Marcel Bruller, taken from a French province where Bruller fought during the early stages of the Second World War. During the Nazi occupation of France in the 1940s, Vercors/Bruller co-founded the clandestine publishing operation Les Éditions de Minuit (The Midnight Press) and was a key literary figure in the Resistance.
