Lowry adds another dimension to her stories about the Krupnik family with this first volume in a series about Anastasia's extremely precocious younger brother, Sam. The story is told from Sam's point of view which is especially fascinating because it begins with Sam's birth. Sam is remarkably self-aware for a newborn, which does not come off as terribly unrealistic, but rather an unique and fun. Readers of the Anastasia books will notice events and conversations becoming much more clear from Sam

Dave does this as a read-aloud with his class. He and Anna both recommended I read it. This would be an excellent book to read with children who are about to or already have a younger sibling to help them understand the inner-workings of a toddler's mind. Very sweet story. Sam has a loving family who helps him explore and understand things in his world. The chapters are self-contained, which makes this particularly good for reading aloud one chapter at a time.

You would not think that Lois Lowry would be able to write a FUNNY book after reading The Giver, but oh she can! This book is from Sam's point of view from the minute he's born and it is HILARIOUS! I was laughing through the whole thing because it's so true! I recommend reading it out loud to someone, preferably your mom, so that you can see their reactions too.

Sam Krupnik is best known as Anastasia's brilliant little brother. Sam has his own story, though; and now it's time for him to tell it. We see Sam's life through his eyes--from his birth, to walking and talking, to first pets and scary monsters. Sam has his own mind and his own way of seeing things...that might not be the same way that everyone else sees it.
I loved this book. It was adorable and funny, just like all of the Anastasia books. Sam is quite a character and it is amusing t More...

Delightful story of Sam, Anastasia Krupnik's younger brother, from his perspective. It begins with his impressions of the delivery room and his family and continues on through his frustration at not being able to make himself verbally understood, learning how to roll and walk, and his impressions of his environment, his mis-understandings of his world (pan-tree, as Sam hears it, must be a type of tree, nursery school is where he will learn to be a nurse and give shots, etc.) Many laugh-out-lou

Cute story through the eyes of a baby named Sam and how he sees things has he grows up. Gotta get kids to read these older books like this one.

Sylas is loving this book and not just because his baby brother is Sammy. He loves the double meaning of the words and Sam's misconceptions of what he is being told.

This story gives the life of Sam through his point of view. It even has his thoughts as a baby coming out of his mothers womb, in his crib, and before he could walk.
Sam didn't want to potty train an flushed his sisters goldfish down the toilet. He also enters a pet contest (with a worm!) and learns a lesson about stealing. There are a few other things Sam does to get into mischief...

I have read this book to every class of 2nd and 3rd graders I've taught. There is ALWAYS loud laughter and rolling on the floor, especially when Sam is a baby and doing baby things in his diaper. The kids love hearing the story of a mischevious little boy who is keenly observant of his surroundings. Very entertaining!

My kids thoroughly enjoyed this book. We would read one or two chapters a night. They would try to get me to read more about Sam's antics. It was quite a funny book. My kids were sad when it ended. I may have to find more books written by this author.

This is a children's book, but every parent should read it. It is a view of the early years through the eyes of the child. Lowry did an AMAZING job with this one.

This is a great read aloud to small children. My active three-year-old daughter sat in my lap and listened to the whole thing! (It just took a few days.) Very funny.

The five and six year olds were literally rolling on the floor giggling. I had to read the section where Anastasia thought Sam was kidnapped about 100 times.

This is a fun book I just finished reading with Josh (10) and Sammy (8). It was really cute and funny and kept me entertained as well as the boys.

I loved the part of this book that was written from the newborn baby's point of view. Very original and convincing!!!

Sweet and funny, if a bit contrived. The misunderstood word device is hoary but still works really well.
