The author is best known for several science fiction novels but this is not science fiction at all. It is a family history novel spanning from the mid-19th century to the late 20th in and around a city much like Cincinnati. It includes civic corruption, a family curse, the Jazz age, and coming-of-age in the beatnik/existential environment. It shows off some gorgeous writing, intricate plotting, and bizarre imaginings.
