A fascinating first person account of the formative years of Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, via the Eastern and Midlands Railway. The pride that the Author had for the Line is evident, as is the palpable frustration at being largely ignored by some of the larger railway concerns, viewed as potential partners and saviours in equal measure.

The rural nature of the line, and it's subsequent eccentricities are evident throughout the narrative, some of the incidents reported border on the

William Marriott (1857 – 17 November 1943) was the engineer, locomotive superintendent and traffic manager of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN)
