I really wanted to love this book.
But I didn't.
It's an Australian book set in colonial days.
Children in a rural town encounter ex convicts haunted by their past and Aboriginal friends troubled by their future.
The Landscape is well described, with the Hunter River playing a key role.
But I much prefer Ivan Southall's Hilal End, for an atmospheric portrayal of the struggle between kids and nature.
And I feel bad for saying it, but Wright's depiction of the family just sound stilted and forced. Her

Judith Wright is probably Australia's greatest poet; she was also an ardent conservationist and activist. She died in 2000, at the age of 85.
