I started reading her with the Silhouette Desires she published, and I liked the way she wrote intense love stories with magnetic heroes and heroines I liked. I waffled for a year or so before deciding to try her book Slave to Sensation. I was just getting into paranormal, and I wasn't sure about the sci-fi elements. Finally, I read it, and I was hooked from that point on.

When I heard that Nalini Singh was venturing into urban fantasy, of course I was going to buy Angels' Blood. She's autobuy for me, and urban fantasy is one of my absolute favorite genres. It also helps that I have this unhealthy love for angels. I'll read most books with an angel theme. Let me tell you, I was so impressed with this book.

Nalini Singh took the theme of angels and made it her own. She captured the essential elements of angelhood (except for the messengers of God part), and gave it some dark and sinister aspects. In Singh's world, Angels are very carnal, sexual beings who involve themselves with the human world, exploit the fact that humans are drawn to, adore them, and sometimes worship them, and have put themselves at the top of the hierarchy. Basically, angels run things. They even Make vampires to be their servants. Of course, absolute power has a way of corrupting. In this case, there is an archangel (the most powerful type of angel) who has gone beserk and is on a killing spree. A scary thought there, an absolutely beautiful, pretty much invincible being on a killing spree. Who's going to stop him? Raphael, the Archangel of New York, has appointed himself to do that. But he needs the help of the best Hunter (vampires) in New York, Elena. And, he decides that he wants to have more than a business relationship with this powerful warrior woman (that's his type, you see).

Raphael was some kind of character. He defines the 'gamma' hero. Not gamma as in the mix of alpha and beta. Gamma in the sense of mad, bad, and dangerous to know. Raphael is utterly ruthless. He knows just how powerful he is, and he's not afraid to use that power to achieve his goals. He is not controlled by human morals. He follows a higher law, the laws set by himself and the Cadre, the group of ten archangels who pretty much rule the world. This guy was one of those heroes that sends a chill down your spine, but also has you gaga over him because he was so gorgeous and just had that masculine appeal that turns your bones into water. He thought about killing Elena several times, because human life has no value for beings that are essentially immortal. I was like, "Okay?" I admit, I like that dark/edgy hero, but I could see how that would be chilling for some readers. But, somehow, Elena found the small aspect of this scary dude that could love. He was drawn to her for the essence of who she was, the fierce hunter, the vulnerable woman beneath the tough facade. She made him more humanlike just by reaching that core of him that yearned to be truly loved and to love someone. Even more than a millenia of having whatever lovers he wanted didn't leave this archangel satisfied. But Elena had to power to give him what he yearned for.

Elena was a very likeable character. She was tough, a survivor, but also very humane. She had a great sense of humor, and didn't let anyone push her around. She takes her job very seriously, and is determined to find this archangel who is leaving a grisly pile of bodies in his wake. She has no idea how to react to Raphael. He's gorgeous, because all angels are. But he is moreso than any others to her. She's attracted to his strength, and the unearthly beauty and functionality of his wings, and the intrinsic deadly appeal of him, with his volcanic sex appeal. At the same time, she's not signing up to be anyone's toy, seeing the way angels manipulate vampires and people like puppets. She's got to get this job done and somehow try to keep Raphael from killing her or seducing her into his bed until he gets bored and casts her aside.

Ms. Singh managed to capture the razor edge of the attraction, the unfolding relationship between Elena and Raphael and pair it to a very dark, very noir murder mystery. I was actually surprised at how grisly the murders are in this book. It was well done, and Ms. Singh didn't flinch away from those aspects, so I couldn't either. Uram, the angel that went blood-thirsty, was one scary, despicable creature, all the more so for his unearthly angelic beauty.

I thought this story had such an appeal. I could see very vividly the physical loveliness and allure of the angels and the vampires, and how they could turn deadly in a split second. Ms. Singh captured the appeal of these beings so very well, along with the inherent menace and danger they represented to humans and hunters. In my estimation this story represented the underlying theme of how society is set up to favor the powerful and endowed, whether it's with money, sex-appeal, or beauty. And the rest of us have to struggle to keep our heads above water if we lack any of the above. But, we don't give up. We keep fighting. Elena represents the everyday person who is fighting that battle against the system and the 'big fishes'. I admired Elena for having the guts to immerse herself in this world, knowing that her hunter-born strength only gave her a slight edge over the average human.

Because this is the start of an urban fantasy series, Ms. Singh is somewhat stingy with some details. She tantalized me with the romance elements, giving me enough to be somewhat satiated, but knowing there was more to be told about Raphael and Elena's relationship. I wanted to know more and see more of this world she created, and all the fascinating characters she has introduced. I am already invested in this series, because I crave more of this world of alluring and lethal creatures. This was a book that grabbed me and did not let go. (less)

Soooo... I was expecting to read a good book... but never was I expecting to find my next fav. series! I can't believe I waited this long to read this book. I just loved it. I know that some gave just 4 stars to this book, and I don't get it, it had EVERYTHING a good book should have to be one of the bests.

This was my first book by Nalini Singh, but it wasn't my last. After reading this book I got online and ordered all of the books in her other series.

I really liked the world that Singh created with this novel. It is definitely a concept I haven't read before. I love when someone comes out with a new way to portray angels and vampires. I didn't just love the book for its world though. The author did a great job creating compelling characters.

This was a unique take on vampires and hunters with the addition of angels as rulers, caretakers, lords, and lovers. I've always kind of had a thing for angels and I love that they're sexual beings in this series. Religion is absent in Angels' Blood and I was exceedingly grateful for that. There is no battle waging between heaven and hell, and there are angels of all races and nationalities.

Elena Deveraux is a Guild Hunter, she goes after vampires that have gone astray and violated their contracts that they signed in blood with the angels that Made them. Elena gets hired by the most powerful angel in the United States, the archangel Raphael. She's supposedly the best when it comes to tracking vampires and he wants her to help him find someone. Along the way Elena constantly courts death, sometimes battling foes, and sometimes baiting Raphael.

I think some other reviewers have some things up pretty well; Singh can write a great story but her characters lack depth. I've only read this one book by her so I don't have anything to compare this too, but it seems from reading other reviews that this is the general consensus. I liked Elena and I liked Raphael but I wasn't pulled into the story and their lives as much as I feel I should have. In fact, I found myself pulled toward the lesser characters as they seemed to have more personality. Also, some of the sex scenes were a bit underdeveloped - it seems that Singh has a better grasp of flirtation and sexual tension than the actual act. Some of the things that Raphael said he wanted to do to her were sexier than what he actually did. When they finally do have sex it's sort of anti-climatic, ironically.

I loved the world and the concepts that Singh has come up with though, it's all very unique and something I haven't seen done before. This sort of reminds me of Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, in that there are a lot of different beings running about, more than in normal paranormal romance; there's action, gruesome bits, good supporting characters, and great banter and sexy scenes between the hero and heroine. I just wish that the two of them had been developed a bit more, they're both basically one-dimensional, but this didn't really make me dislike them, I was just a little disappointed that Singh didn't take her characters a step further.

I'll definitely read the next book and give her other series a try. I like her ideas and I think I've found a new author to latch onto!(less)

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux has to be one of my newest favourite heroines. I found myself instantly trusting her judgement. In a world where angels, vampires and humans co-exist, you would think that as a mortal Elena would be submissive to those who hold more power than her. Hell no. Elena is capable of handling herself well in dire circumstances. She’s smart, tough and a little snarky too. She is a damn good warrior and it’s great to see a strong woman who can hold her own. Especially against a certain sexy Archangel named Raphael.

God, I don’t know what to say about Raphael. He dazzles me. He frightens me. He angers me. One moment he can be so seductive you want to run straight into his arms and in the next moment, he can be so cruel that you fear to have his hands on you. Singh does a great job of maintaining a balance between the two that you identify with Elena’s own confusion about Raphael. Singh makes a good point in the beginning where she explains that as an Archangel, Raphael has power that is terrifying but also so compelling you can’t seem to stay away. He’s such a fierce hero. You know he’s a force to be reckoned with. I just love the way Singh describes him. He is otherworldly but also shows signs of humanity. And the way she describes his wings? Absolutely amazing.

Another great thing about this book is the villain. Uram, the archangel-gone-bad is one sick bastard. And even though Elena and Raphael don’t come face to face with him until the end, you still feel hatred towards him and wish to see him die. I thought Singh did a great job of evoking sympathy for his victims by focusing on the carnage he wrought. She is able to make Uram look so bloodthirsty and insane without having him present in each scene. I think if any other author did this, we probably wouldn’t think the villain was scary at all. Somehow Singh pulls it off.

I am so glad I picked up this series! I cannot wait to read Archangels’ Kiss. I am dying to know about Elena and Raphael. And I wonder if Singh plans to write a series on the Seven? I’d read it!

I have a horrible track record with books everybody else seems to love. I’m usually the one person on the face of the earth that’s guaranteed to hate them so I was understandably nervous when I started this.

I didn’t hate this. I frigging LOVED it.

This entire book is like a breath of fresh air. It seems to break every cliché used in these types of books. The main character, Elena, is a total BAMF. In so many paranormal stories the MC is the exception to some mysterious rule. The other characters are always intrigued by them, drawn to them, love them, etc. Most of the time you have no frigging idea why that is because you can’t see anything special in them that would cause these reactions in others. With Elena, you totally get it. The reason she unnerves and interests creatures that are hundreds of years old or older is because when faced with hostility and threats, she asks questions. Her constant curiosity disarms these ancient beings, makes them think, amuses them. She’s a break in the monotony. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by that?

She’s like the upgraded version of every heroine I’ve ever read about.

Step right up folks! This model comes complete with a Brain-to-Mouth Filter, Intelligence, Quirkiness, Likability, Genuine Emotion, Rational Thinking, Self-Deprecation, the list goes on and on!

This story provides a new, interesting take on both angels and vampires. You see, angels make vampires. Elena is a born vampire hunter and unlike every other vampire hunter I’ve EVER read about she doesn’t think they all need to be wiped off the face of the planet. She’s even had a run in with a really deranged one yet doesn’t let that horrific early life experience lead her to blind hatred. IMAGINE THAT.

I loved the plot, the twists and the interactions between Elena and the other characters, especially Raphael. Oh and speaking of Raphael, he’s this incredible amalgamation of Jericho Barrons, Jean-Claude and V’lane. With wings. Nuff said.

I loved how fresh and original this book felt. The premise of the book/series is not something that has been hashed and rehashed a zillion times in PNR/UF fiction.
Like a lot of Singh's books I felt that the character development was a little bit lacking. And while the plot of the book is about Elena hunting an archangel gone bad, the first half consisted primarily of Elena and Raphael's flirting. It was enjoyable flirting, for sure, but I was ready for the actual book to start.

Angels Blood is a terrific mix of intrigue, suspense, action, and romance. The author did a great job creating a highly original world with its archangels, angels, vampires and guild hunters. I really like the main character Elena--tough, hard working, loyal, etc. The series also does a good job developing the supporting cast--guild hunters Elena is friends with and Raphel's Seven (his key lieutenants).

The style of this series reminds me of a cross between the Night Huntress books by Frost and Black Dagger Brotherhood by Ward. Frost since it follows an interesting, kick a$$ hero/heroine throughout the course of the books and the heroine is reluctant at first for the relationship. And BDB because of the darker, grittier feel and Raphael is such a hot, tough bad a$$. Raphael reminds me in style to Barrons (Fever)--the ultimate alpha type.

**Suggestion: If you haven't finished Angel's Blood do not read the description or look at the covers of the other books in the series, otherwise you'll ruin awesome surprise ending at the end of Angel's Blood.**

This series is a whole new take on the angels and vampires 'thing'. "Angel's Blood" is the beginning of a new series by Nalini Singh. I'm already a fan of her Psy-Changeling series and was afraid this new series was really just an off-shoot of that...but it's not. This series is a whole new take on the angels and vampires 'thing'. And while there were some frustrating parts to this first book, I still have to give it all five stars as I was absolutely riveted for the last half of the book and am on tenterhooks waiting for news of the next release.

Elena is a born vamp-hunter. Her specialty is tracking by scent and it's not something one can learn or teach...it just is. Her experiences have left her wary and more than a little choosy about just who she allows to get close to her. Her job has made her wealthy although she often ponders how long she'll live to use it. Then she gets an invitation that's truly a summons...from the Archangel Raphael who rules New York. It seems he's in need of her services and saying no to an Archangel? Well...you just can't do that and live to tell about it.

It seems an Archangel has gone bad and is about to embark on a killing spree that would give Vlad the Impaler a run for his money. And Elena must track him. The relationship between the main characters in this first book suffered a bit as the author had to add in a heaping helping of world building and lore while still keeping the page count from shooting into the atmosphere.

I confess that I had a hard time warming up to Elena and Raphael, both separately and together. There were bits of pieces of both that I still don't fully know or understand, and yet the two of them together somehow seemed perfect about halfway through the book! I can see this series becoming HUGE in that there are so many direction the author can take this...and I think most of them will be fascinating.

Nalini Singh can write passion and feelings very well. And now I know she can also give a realistic spin to a storyline that has a darker, urban fantasy feel to it. Put these two things together with an imagination that came up with something 'new' in the paranormal world and she's a writer I hope to enjoy for many years to come.(less)

Kitabı tekrar okudum ve ne kadar güzel olduğunu hatırladım. Elena ve Raphael her seferinde beni benden almayı başaran gerçekten harika karakterler.
Kitabı okuyalı neredeyse bir yıl olmuş, tekrar okumaktan asla pişman olmayacağım büyüleyici bir seri. Her kitabı daha bir heyecanla daha bir merakla bekler oldum.

This is the first books of Nalini Singh's that I have read, and wow I have been missing out! I am glad to have found another author and series to get in to.

The book was about Rapheal the Archangel of New York City and Elena Deveraux a natural born Hunter whose job it is to hunt rogue vampires and bring them back to the angel who "owns" them. Her ability to sniff vampires out (quite literally) bring her to Rapheals attention as he needs her help tracking down a very difficult and angelic target....more This is the first books of Nalini Singh's that I have read, and wow I have been missing out! What I really liked about this book was the world building, Singh's approach on vampires, angels and archangels was really good and original although the vampires were basically the same as other vampires in other books, the way they were created and their way of life was quite unique. Basically the power structure is: Archangels, Angels, Vampires and then us lowly Humans. The vampires are Made by the angels and have to sign a contract in blood pledging 100 years of service to that angel, with service basically being a euphemism for slavery. That was another point I quite liked, the angels weren't good, nor were they really evil either what they were was lethally cold, logical and selfish.

What I also really liked was the set of characters that had been created. I especially liked Elena's character, she was a strong feisty woman who would rather die then beg or grovel to anyone, including a certain arrogant, cold and drop dead gorgeous Archangel. She was also very compassionate, but practical enough not to let it get in the way of what she needs to do. Rapheal I wasn't so sure of at first as he was quite cold and merciless when you first meet him, I imagine if he was real he would scare the pants off me! But as the books progressed and he and Elena's relationship got closer and more intimate I began to like him a lot more, and now at the end although he is not my favourite hero I did really like him. I also liked the secondary characters in the book especially members of the Seven, a special set of totally loyal bodyguards that Rapheal keeps, and I am hoping that at some point Dmitri, Venom, Jason and Illium will get their own books. Also Sara from the novella in "Must Love Hellhounds" was also in this book.

So I highly recommend this book as it is really good, definately one to put on the keeper shelf.

August 2011 Re-read- I bumped this up to 5 stars I really enjoyed reading it this time round, I still haven't warmed up that much to Rapheal but Elena is still one of my favourite heroines and Dmitri, Venom and Illium are interesting characters, and it is even better now, knowing they will get their own books!(less)

The first time I read this book I was less than impressed and originally only gave it a 3-star rating. Somehow, I just found it hard to connect with the story and characters after having devoured Singh's amazing 'Psy-Changeling' series. But... these 'Guild Hunter' books are just so darn popular and I've been looking to get into another paranormal romance/urban fantasy series that I decided to give this one another go and, boy, I'm glad I did!

Second read-through (March 14 - 16, 2012):
Glad I decided to reread this before catching up with books 3 and 4; this story was pitch perfect. It's just as amazing as I remember it; perhaps moreso, because I was still enthralled whilst knowing what the outcomes would be. Singh had several books under her belt before she wrote this tale, so it's not surprising that it suffers from no weaknesses common to series openers. Love it!

Nalini Singh’s books are always hard for me to get into, but once I get past her confusing writing style, I can’t get enough of her irresistible characters. I absolutely loved Elena and Raphael. And God, I wish I could touch his beautifully described wings...*sigh* Is Archangel's Kiss as good as this one? If so, I can't wait to read it!

P.S. Why don't my books have BJ scenes anymore? Ugh.

Elena Deveraux is born vampire hunter. She can track a vampire by its smell, and she is paid to return the vampire to its creator, an angel to whom the vampire is contracted for service. Raphael is the Archangel of New York, a powerful, terrifying, beautiful creature, who is in need of Elena's services. The two clash wills, as Raphael is unused to being stood up to, and Elena is not willing to be anyone's puppet. Eventually, they form a truce - and an attraction - as they track Uram, an Archangel who has gone bad.

The world is an interesting one: a parallel NYC where sights of angels, though aweinspiring, are not unheard of. Where the word "angel" doesn't mean a gentle messenger of God, but a hardened warrior. And where vampires are either angel lackeys or trusted employees, as well as being highly desired lovers.

Elena is a strong hunter, devoted to her craft and willing to take all the lumps that come with it (including being outcast from her own family). She never really crosses the line into becoming a ball-busting heroine who can't stand to be seen as weak - in fact, she collects girly perfumes and flowers to hide the stench of her dayjob - but there were a few times that I was really jarred by her character. Usually as she stood up to Raphael for some relatively small infraction, even knowing that he could kill her in one sweep of his arm. She's attracted to Raphael, but it's made pretty clear early in the book that she's never taken much interest in sex, so when she relatively quickly jumps into bed with Raphael, it felt out of place. Plus, her mysterious past is alluded to often and is motive behind many of her reactions to Raphael, but we never learn what happened to her.

Raphael is the most interesting character of this book, and I was disappointed that we didn't see more of his character. He goes from being an unfeeling Archangel who is no longer impressed by humanity, to a more human-like being who is heartbroken when he might lose Elena. But he has some mystery in his past as well. And, well, two characters with vague foreshadowing of their pasts --- that's just too much.

Like I said, the romance is not a big part in this book. The two protagonists are attracted, they fight, they make up, they have sex, and then they seem to be in a relationship. I didn't buy it. And I fear that they might be setting up a few members of Raphael's Seven (the vampires and angels who work for him) as potential threats to Raphael and Elena's relationship (mostly Dmitri, a vampire who delights is torturing Elena with this sensual scent).

At this point, I don't know that I'll pick up Angel's Kiss, the next book, because the blurb did make it seem as though it's a continuation of Raphael's and Elena's story. It's a lose/lose situation: I don't want to read another book about this couple, but they really need another book because there's not enough info about them in this one to really connect to the characters. Wow...

With Archangel's Blade having just released this month, I figured it was time to finally read the first one. I can't tell you how wonderful this book was.

Nalini Singh has such a seductive way of writing, that she pulls you in and draws you close, until you can only eat, sleep, and breathe her world. I take that back-there was no sleeping. I stayed up late to read.

Ok, I so did not want to fall in love with another storyline...really I didn't but...I did. This is the first of this author that I have read and must say, I'm impressed. If there is one thing that I love is a hero that starts out borderline but is redeemed because of love both for his heroine and who and what she is to him and those she loves. I am so excited I’ve just found a new favorite author—Nalini Singh is amazing!
I have seen this book so many times and have passed it over time and again. I like vampires, witches, and sometimes even werewolves—but angels? That’s just stupid—or so I thought. I would have never read this book if it wasn’t recommended by someone whose opinion I trusted, and all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you (you know who you are).

Buddy reread with Amy and Sarah and it was so much better than I thought it would be. It was the first book that I ever reread. I tried rereading The Fever series but had a book on the sidelines at the time and ended up bailing. The very beginning wasn't as intense but once I got into it was almost as good as the first time. Nalini, sure has the ability to have me slaved to her series. The Guild Hunter was no exception.
