Holy Bananas!

Book Four in the Ranger's Apprentice not only makes up for the lack luster book Three, it left it my fists pumping in the air! Book Three basically set up the events for book Four, in which the ranger Halt and the warrior apprentice Horace were in search of the missing princess Evelyn and the ranger apprentice Will. But enough of the pleasantries and onto the action! Book Four, or the Battle for Skandia, is non stop action. Grab it now and enjoy!

Amazing. I've loved this series since Ruins of Gorlan the first book. It's suspenseful, action packed, and fun to read. It really makes you want to read. I really love how mortal enemies can come together to save their world. John Flanagan did a great job with this book and all his others. Really, really good.

Evanlyn was tied to a thick pine, halfway down in the snow, watching the vicious Temujai about to slice her in two. An arrow suddenly burrowed into his wrist and he fell to his knees in pain. Suddenly three figures dashed from the forest and destroyed the Temujai camp taking just one prisnor.

As Will, a ranger's apprentice, Horace, a warrior apprentice, and Halt a full fledged ranger begin to leave the cold frozen land of Skandia they find a whole army of the marauding Temu...more

And the ascent continues. Flanagan keeps it going for a third consecutive improvement, this time shifting his focus to evolving character development and relationships. Will has to struggle his way back from his addiction to the warmweed and regain his Ranger skills. He has to balance his resurgent Ranger-ness with his relationship with Cassandra, which is definitely going to be a crucial part of the forthcoming books. Does she love him? Is she seeking some kind of loyalty or return from hi...more

1. The Temujia are going to attack Skandia. The Temujia an amazing horse archer group. So Will, Halt, Horace, Erik, and Evanlyn work together to train the Skanidians for the fight. The only thing is that the Temujia have the Skanidians out numbered by a couple thousand.
2. This time peroid is in the Medeval age in a mountain kind of area with trees and bushes. Yes this could happen in a different time peroid and different place. Lilke the Chinese and Mongols. The Mongols could be attacking ...more

In a way, this book reads as the conclusion of a trilogy. I could easily see book one as a prequel, with books 2 and 3 setting up the story for a great conclusion here. And it really is a great conclusion.

This book is primarily set in Skandia, and just as we think all might be alright, with Halt and Horace finally catching up with Will and Evanlyn, they're plunged into more danger as a new group of warriors - more overwhelming than ever seen before - threaten the Skandians and nation...more

This is the fourth book in the Ranger's Apprentice series; there are twelve books planned in this series with the tenth book, The Emperor of Nihon-Jam, released in April of 2011. This was a good book in the series and continues the story line that was started in book 2, The Burning Bridge.

Will and Evelyn are recovering in the cabin in the woods when things take a turn for the worse. Evelyn is abducted by a third party no one even knew was in Skandia. Will tries to save her and runs ...more

Ranger’s Apprentice and the Battle for Skandia By John Flanagan

The main characters in this book are Halt, a ranger, Horace, an apprentice warrior, Will, an apprentice ranger, Evelyn/Cassandra, a princes in hiding, and Erak, a Skandian Jarl which means he is really important.
The most important part in the book is either when Halt and Horace save Will and Evelyn from the Temujia, or when they go Hallasholm and tell the leader about how they are going...more

Will and Evanlyn (really Princess Cassandra of Araluen) are planning to sneak back across the border and hopefully make their way back to Araluen to safety. Before they are able to escape and before Will builds back his strength after coming out of his addiction from the warmweed. It deteriorated his strength and endurance so much that Evanlyn had pretty much taken up a lot of responsibilities around the small hunting cabin they were hiding in. Will tried to do what he could to help out but he s...more

Book four in the series of The Ranger's apprentice. This story is the continuation of the kidnapping of two children who are now in the throes of a war between two countries they do not share much love with. It is a fun read because it has lots of tongue in cheek humor, plus a never ending twist plot that has you rooting for one enemy only to change your mind and root for the other three pages later. It is a book that brings tactics of war into play in such a manner that has the reader thinking ...more

Horace and Halt FINALLY find Evanlyn and Will. TG. I was tired of the drama. Unfortunately, they also discover that a fierce band of warriors, the Temujai, are planning to attack and overtake Skandia...and will likely succeed due to the Skandians poor fighting strategies. Luckily, they have a secret weapon: Halt. And once Halt manages to persuade them of his knowledge and worth, they immediately start training and preparing for the battle. Now I am not one who appreciates a battle scene, u...more

"The Battle for Skandia" by John Flanagan is the third in the series "Ranger's apprentice". In this exciting adventure, there are many perspectives. These perspectives include Will, the main character, Evalynn, the princess, Halt, Will's master, and Horace, Will's good warrior friend. The plot is that the Temujai, the strongest nation of this part of the world was about to raid and take over Skandia, the land of the brutal and savage "vikings". Will and Halt decided...more

WOW! What a fulfilling read! I rarely ever like a book in a series as much as the first book, and while this is no exception this one brought me as much plasure that the difference is negligible. I would say this is the best middle of a series type book I have read since catching fire...(and blasphame) I might even say it has surpassed the Hunger games for me in terms of enjoyment (Although it is probably to close to call).

The 3rd book in the series was a mild let down for me, as com...more

After escaping Skandian slavery, Will and Evanlyn have been hiding in a cabin in the mountains when they are captured by Temujai scouts. Halt and Horace arrive in Skandia and discover the border post of Skandians has been completely destroyed. They follow tracks and find Will and Evanlyn, and take out the Temujai scouts, but Halt comes to realize that the Temujai are actually plotting a massive invasion. Halt must join forces with the Skandians in order to repel the mighty invaders and prev...more

This was a great follow-up to the previous installment. However, I believe some the familiarity and tropes of the genre are starting to overshadow the uniqueness of the original novel. The characters overcome impossible odds, unfathomable hordes, and are getting a little too powerful for there to be much threat anymore to their well-being. Overall, it was entertaining and Flanagan is doing an admirable job of trying to add some more element of humor to this series. Flanagan also does a good job ...more

In the fourth installment of the Ranger's Apprentice series, I found that overall the story was as entertaining as in past books, but that I felt a little something was missing. The battle scenes were fine (though I lost track of a thing or two in the thick of it) and the plot was OK, but the characters seemed to fall into the backdrop of the conflict.

Evanlyn, previously developed in book three as a very strong and reliable woman character, was reduced to a bit of a petty whiner whose...more

Following the events in book three, Will and Evanlyn have been hiding out in the woods after escaping slavery in Skandia. Finally, reaching Skandia themselves, Halt and Horace discover an outpost of Skandians completely destroyed. Realizing that the Temujai army has begun invading Skandia, Halt must join forces with the Skandians in order to fend off the mighty invaders. For, if the Temujai succeed, they would eventually go after Araluen as well.

Unlike the previous installments, this...more

The Battle For Skandia by John Flanagan is a great book and like all the other rangers apprentice books have a great storyline and conflict. general ages id say at least 11 and up..

Will and Evanlyn are in the hands of fate as spring arrives and the snow melts. But as Will finds himself weakend by the affects warmweed has left behind has much more work to do before he is ready to go out in the world looking for his master. And on the otherhand Evanlyn is now striving to keep both herse...more

I've really gotten into this series - I've read books 1-3 during the summer 2009 because my daughter has been interested in them. I like reading some of the young adult lit to see what she's into and have book discussions at our house. It's great to facilitate all sorts of conversations. Anyhow, this series is sort of a cross between historical fiction and fantasy. There is talk in the books about sorcerers and magic; however, it's all proven to have scientific explanations for anyone worrie...more

Will and Evanlyn escaped from the slave yard! NOw they're hiding out in a small cabin in the woods, until Will regains to his normal self. I can't believe how warmweed come be that addictive. Is that the "drugs" people used in this time era. Also, he probably lost all his shooting abilities, and now, he's out of shape. I hate when that happens because you have to regain them through training and the process can be hard and frustating.

Wow! Will is training a unit of archers...more

What a great read! I read it in one day (I'm a mom with two young kids. This is saying a lot).

My son said this was his favorite because of the big, epic battle scene. When he said it, I thought - boys will be boys. Boys and their weapons. But you know what? He was right. It was one of the best battle scenes I've read in adult or YA fiction. I could clearly see how the battle field was laid out and what kind of punishment that the Temujai warriors were receiving from the Skandians and...more

The end of this book marks a very definite pause in the action of the previous three. It completes the first full story arc, but of course paves the way for the next novels to come.

I am increasingly finding it difficult to talk about these books without spoiling them for others. The book's plot largely is revealed by the title- Skandia is being invaded, and our heroes get involved in the battle in a very major way. All of the main characters are reunited fairly early in the novel,...more

The idea of a "Youth" book or a YA (Young Adult) book is a relatively new idea in literature, even as the idea of a set of books set aside as "children's books" is only a little older. I have recently read more of the genre YA noted above and I find there are a lot of wonderfully written and well plotted books in that genre.

I started the books in this series when I was looking for audio books for my wife who was ill at the time and spent a lot of time with audio ...more

I am still enjoying this series and am going to order the next. In this one enemies unite to face a greater threat. Will and Evelyn both grow.

Just finished reading it with my eldest son. He really enjoys Halt's character and was glad he was back with Will. He also seems to enjoy the Skandians.
