I just got the book Jesus Calling in the mail today. It's a 365 daily devotional book. I normally do not like these books as most of them are very trite and do not make the reader dive deep into Scripture and your own walk with God. They tend to deal with surface issues. Sarah Young has opened up her life to us in this work of hers.

She gives a background of how she came about to write this and I'm absolutely amazed at what the Lord has brought her through. She took time every morning to listen t...more

I love to "start" traditions, but I am not very good at keeping them -- except when they are bad habits, but that's another story. But reading this book has become a tradition I'd like to keep doing for a very long time. Every day, when I sit down for my evening meal, I light a candle and read from Sarah Young's Jesus Calling. The entries are simple, direct encouragement in the first person voice of Jesus Christ and are, more often than not, spot on. If we are to be close to God, walking step by...more

what a great find. I have searched and searched for a bible that I identified with! The little devotions by every day people inspire me and bring me peace. They interspersed throughout the bible and at interval that makes sense and relates to each topic as they come.

Reading the bible has never been easy for me, but this little gem of a bible makes it easier, and makes God's word make sense in relation to the world I live in. I have found countless topics to discuss with my child, and my husband,...more

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young (Thomas Nelson) is a masterpiece! The new deluxe edition is encased in a lovely leather cover, which adds to the appeal of this 365 day devotional. Unlike other devotionals, Young records thoughts she receives from God in a personal format, so each devotional is like a little message from God that aims directly for the heart.

After reading just a few entries of Jesus Calling, I wept. This book massaged my weary heart and panicked spirit...more

I must admit, I’m usually not one to like devotional books. I’ve read many over the years and hate the “fluff” that is found in many devotionals. I find that what is given to the reader is a few short paragraphs that amount to “Christianity Lite” and I find I’m always looking for more. As a reviewer for Thomas Nelson Publishers, though, I decided to give this devotional a try.

This devotional book, with a reading for each day of the year, is the most unique devotional I’ve ever read. The author,...more

This daily devotional is a beautiful gift for anyone, or a treat to buy for yourself. Sarah Young used to write a journal for years and one day decided to begin listening to Jesus in a more attentive way. This book is the words that came to her, written as if Jesus Himself is speaking to you. In the pages are the words and scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Sarah passes these words onto us with scriptures at the bottom of each page.

I read this through from cover to cover in one evening...more

This small, 5x7, book is a daily devotional for those of us who want to become closer to Jesus Christ. Sarah Young divides this book into months with a date on each selection. There is also a scripture reference at the end of each passage. Each devotional is written from the Savior's perspective.
I really did not like this book very much. I thought I would, but I think there was too many ideas that I did not agree with. I believe that Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father are 2 separate beings and tha...more

Jesus Calling is a daily devotional written to speak directly to your heart and soul.

Sarah Young felt Christ inspire her to write down what He said during her quiet time with Him. In these messages He showed her who He is and who she is in Him. Each day He gave her a down to earth, easy to understand, personal message. She then passed those messages to us in the form of a daily devotional.

I have been searching for a daily devotional for years. I have longed for one that would help me see Chris...more

I love this book. It isn't meant to be read straight through, it is a daily journey. I don't read this everyday, although I should. I tend to read it more when I am stressed out. I go to the date it is and read the entry, then read the Bible verses that go along with it. It is a great stress reliever and really helps me through those bad days. When I do pick it up, I will read it nearly daily for a good month or so, but I usually get busy and forget for a while after. I haven't read it for about...more

I felt led to share my thoughts with all of you on a very popular devotional book of our day written by Sarah Young and published by Thomas Nelson.

I did not come easily to the place of receptivity with this book, initially. You see, although I periodically perused it a number of times at the local bookstore, included it on my "wish list" on Amazon and even came close to buying it outright on more than one occasion, I held back... for almost 4 years. Why, would a bookaholic hold back on buying...more

I loved a quote a blogger shared from this book:

“If you encounter a problem with no immediate solution your response to that situation will take you either up or down. You can lash out at the difficulty resenting it & feeling sorry for yourself…self-pity. Or it can become a ladder, enabling you to climb up and see your life from My perspective...light & momentary trouble.” -Jesus Calling

Now I want to read the book!

The Overview

This edition of Jesus Calling is a year's worth of daily devotions for the teen years. Each day there is a small reading which is written as if it's a direct message from Jesus Himself. Then there is a Scripture written out and one to be looked up in his/her own Bible for further reading.

These daily readings are not "light and fluffy", but rather solid truth that will encourage their young hearts to rest in the unending love of God. It is a great way to invest $15 that will teach an...more

A dear friend gave me this book during a difficult time in her life, as well as mine. Bless her heart, she remembered how I LOVE leather covers and ribbon markers in books...and gave me that version. This book is unbelievably remarkable because no matter what is pressing down on you, niggling at your heart or just making life seem unbearable...well, THAT day you will read it and it will speak to you as though the Lord truly prepared it just for you...never fails. A short daily meditational readi...more

Got this as a Christmas present just a couple days ago and I already LOVE It. I am 20 something and single and this is so appropriate for my age and it's gorgeous. My sister got the kids version and my stepmom got the regular one. This is gonna be a keeper for sure.

I really believe that Ms. Young has sought God's words for us and through her, she has written down just what we need to hear each day. I've been reading this book daily for a month and every day, the words seep into my heart like a love song. Mother Teresa said, "I am a little pencil in the hands of a writing God, who is writing a love letter to the world." Ms. Young is one of God's little pencils. Thank goodness for her faithfulness to listen to God's messages and to write them down to share.

Excellent!!! This devotional has gotten me through some really tough days... scary experiences. It was as if God Himself were sitting down in front of me speaking the words as He looked me in the eye. I remember a day when my vision had suddenly and dramatically deteriorated and I was sitting waiting to be called for an MRI of my brain with a friend. I'd been having trouble seeing well enough to read the words and had brought it with me and asked her to read the devotion for the day to me. We bo...more

This is absolutely the best devotional I've ever read. My walk with Christ has grown so much in the two years since I started reading it. It has helped me gain perspective on His calling, His grace, His desire for my life, etc., through chronic illness, pre-Empty Nest Syndrome and Empty Nest Syndrome, and all the other places my life has taken me in these years. The purpose of the devotional is to draw us closer to Jesus, to learn to spend time with Him before we get into our crazy, hectic day;...more

The message that we need to trust God and enjoy His presence more is an important one, but the way the author used first person to denote God speaking made me too uncomfortable to finish the book. She did point out in the introduction that the book is not inspired in the same way Scripture is, but speaking in first person on behalf of God still seemed presumptuous. The Holy Spirit does speak to those who listen, but human error is almost always present when we receive messages and then restate t...more

This book is a year of prayer journal by Sarah Young. It is biographical, and very honest. It is amazing to hear the heart felt honesty Sarah speaks to God with. She prays then writes down what she feels/hears God speaking to her. It is amazing that all the words He has for you are congruent with scripture. It is an inspiring book that has led me to be much more in touch with my thoughts, mind, and ultimately God while I am praying. Very Holy Spirit focused book. If you are not up for God reveal...more

This is a very special book and Sarah Young has done an amazing job of meditating on scripture and then re-writing the exact message as if God were sitting across the table from you and talking. It's a personalized account of all that God would like to tell us and in a tone and style that is perfect for today. It seems that I am never reading the exact devotion according to the calendar day, but I can't tell you HOW MANY TIMES the devotional I am reading for that day is the exact perfect message...more

"Enjoying Peace in His Presence" is an apt subtitle. I am finding it useful for remembering to rely on God no matter what the day brings. From an Orthodox Christian perspective, I see it as compatible with the Jesus prayer. It is a bit weird to have it written in Jesus' voice, but the Biblical theology is sound (although I have not yet finished reading). The only thing I don't like is some of the love-relationship language between God and oneself--sometimes it seems more eros than agape, which i...more

Sarah Young has recorded words of comfort from our Lord Jesus given to her during her quiet time with Him. She has taken these words and formatted them into a daily devotional book, spread out over 365 days. Each day is complete with scripture references. I have the leather bound deluxe edition which feels like a treasure in my hands.

For the purpose of this review, I read the book through in its entirety. I am so comforted after reading this book to have confirmation that what I have believed is...more

Author, Sarah Young, decided to start "listening" to God and began to write down what she was hearing. The result is a gorgeous daily devotional book full of words of reassurance, comfort & hope, written as if Jesus is speaking directly to you. Each devotion is short but offers wonderful insight into life and issues that we face, each day of our lives.

A devotional book that I will be using from here on out, Jesus Calling will draw you into the presence of our Saviour and will remind you to b...more

Bought for my sister when she was sick. Our whole family loved it, got it, and began giving as gifts. Everyone who receives it as a gift loves it and starts giving as gifts. I have heard there is some controversy behind it though so you must decide for yourself. This controversy says author was inspired by catholic mystics and my son pointed out one day with a particular devotional that said something like youre about to go through an uphill battle, or something to that effect, how could that ap...more

A dear friend gave me this book during my cancer bout. Many a stranger was reading and praising it at Mardel and she found out why after reading it herself. She now shares it with others and I have continued the trend, soon to be traditional hopefully. This book is a daily journal from Jesus. Yes, a message from Jesus every day to lil' ol' me. So peaceful. So meaningful. So wonderful. So relevant. Just this morning I was laying in bed thinking about the good ol' days when I could just get out of...more

2012 is my second year to go through this devotional.

I heartily recommend Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling - Enjoying Peace in His Presence. DiAnn Mills recommended it to me this spring at the Church Library Conference. I was able to get a copy in the vendor area.

Every day, I have heard Jesus speaking to me. This sensation is so powerful, that I often find myself turning the book to the cover to remind myself that Jesus had not actually read this book.

One day this week, I had a couple of meetings...more

This book was disturbing to me and here is why. I am troubled that the author writes her words as if it was Jesus speaking. My fourteen and fifteen year old Sons were also given a book and before I voiced my opinion, they told me they didn't feel comfortable reading something as though it was Jesus' words when those words came from a human being.

I believe that if Jesus had something to say he is more than capable of saying it instead of someone speaking for him.

It just did not sit well with us.

Sarah Young has a beautiful heart for The Lord and I believe her daily devotional book Jesus Calling is very much 'God breathed'
There are critics out there who say this book is dangerous because of her tenses of writing.....and other reasons for not believing this should be recommended to others for reading...but to that I say....let the Holy Spirit guide you.
The greatest thing this devotional has done for me, and I have now been reading it daily for 15 months, is how wonderful Young continues...more

All through the bible you see God's heart for His children, His great desire for us to seek Him out and be near to Him. This book emphasizes His desire for us to be close with our Maker and Father. I started reading this at the beginning of the year and I have benefited greatly from reading the "message" each morning and then following up with the accompanying scriptures... I wish that I could buy a copy for everyone that I know! OH, HOW MUCH GOD LOVES US!!!

Jesus Calling is one of the best for inspiration! It is consistently encouraging and helps me to think in different terms and from different points of view and adds great meaning and inspiration in my life. If you ever feel that you are alone in this world, read this. You will be amazed how many times it speaks directly to you. This book challenges you to slow down and remember who is in charge and where to place your faith.
