I can see why this would have been popular when it was written in the 1950s, but nowadays it mostly just seems quaint. This is especially so because DNA testing would render the entire story pointless in today's world of mysteries. Still, it's a worthwhile and fast read, good if you have anything like a Sunday reading plan.
The story is set in Switzerland, which was probably the most interesting thing about it for me. I groove on those cultural and lifestyle tidbits.

This is a different sort of...more

I absolutely LOVED this book. The Pledge is a novel of one man's obsession; it is at the same time a critique of writers who pen detective fiction and mysteries. There's no heart-pounding plot here, just a very smooth narrative of a detective's obsession with solving a case based on a promise he made. And though it was written a very long time ago, it is still a novel of great quality, 5-star reading material.

I cannot recommend this novel highly eno...more

I read this novella in two short sittings. Great story! Not sure how useful it is to improving one's knowledge/awareness of Swiss culture - like much good fiction, it's more illuminative of humanity than of the Swiss in particular. Published in 1959 - set in the 1950s.

(pp. 161-162): "The worst does sometimes happen. As men we have to count on that possibility, have to arm ourselves against it, and above all we have to realize that since absurdities necessarily occur, and nowadays manifest themse...more

The most realistic cop thriller ever written. The problem is that it can be only one :)

A beautifully written (and translated) book about a detectives descent into alcoholism in the attempt to catch a serial murderer. The sparing numbness of the style makes the book even more resonant and deeply unlike able. It's very very good. The one source of lightness in the book is the multiple and ardent plugs for the kronenhalle which continues its stately progress through history as Zurichs queen dowager of a resteraunt.

What a fascinating crime novel. In fact, I couldn’t put it down. So, I read straight through, which is unusual for me. I would have given it 4 stars, except the ending was a bit of a letdown. However, Durrenmatt makes his point crystal clear. No matter what extremes an officer goes to in order to bring a criminal to justice, sometimes the crime is solved by just dumb luck.

Dürrenmatt had penned a movie script for a detective story and was forced to rewrite it to have a happy ending. As revenge he wrote this detective story, a crime novella that you can probably guess does not have a happy ending.

The premise is simple: Matthai is a Swiss homicide detective on the brink of retirement. A little girl is murdered in the countryside and he tags along the police. The crime scene is horrifying and Matthai makes the titular pledge to the poor girl's mother: he'll find the...more

This novel confirms that some cold case murder cases resolve themselves and persons who are in a position to claim rewards for crime stopper tips never come forward or do so when it is too late!

The Pledge is not the typical criminal novel. Not only the case in itself or the ending show that, but especially the aspect Dürrenmatt takes on the psychology of the protagonist, Detective Matthäi. He shows the progress he makes and how one event can change a whole life.
It also sets the reader think. Is it ethically right to use a child as a bait? How far is he allowed to go?
And then again the novel shows how we can't control our fate or how life plays.

All in all the book was a quick and enjoya...more

I saw the film made from this movie when it came out; somehow I was less than impressed. The novel is much more effective and profound. Instead of a hard-boiled morality tale set in the America of a 1,000 crime movies*, we have a framed narrative, told by an aging police chief to a chance acquaintance who happens to be a mystery novelist, set in the picture-postcard world of rural Switzerland. The framing of the narrative is an important part of the story. It puts this novel's themes in the cont...more

It's only right and proper that a murder mystery should end with the police arresting the true killer, right? That's the way it was in most classic mysteries at the time Friedrich Dürrenmatt was writing. But Dürrenmatt put this convention into question, both in his earlier novel The Judge and His Executioner and in this 1958 work. The Pledge has as its frame story a retired policeman encountering a mystery writer and telling him that he doesn't think much of the genre -- the greatest problem is...more

Years ago I went to the theater and saw a film that has never really left me. The film starred a grizzled and haunted Jack Nicholson, was directed by Sean Penn who seemed to be channeling his inner King Lear and elderly Akira Kurosawa, and was filmed by the criminally underrated cinematographer Chris Menges. That film, The Pledge, which is based on this book, was not a huge success and though it is well reviewed by critics, I've not met many people who liked it - especially the ending.

Friedrich Durrenmatt, The Pledge (Berkeley, 1957)

While Durrenmatt is a well-known and well-respected author, it took making a film of one of his books to get most people in the States actually reading him. This new film tie-in translation of The Pledge is a great way to start, and will hopefully lead a lot more Americans to a lot more Durrenmatt.

The Pledge is the tale of Matthai, a Swiss police inspector who becomes convinced during the investigation of a child's murder that the cops have got th...more

Wow. Why have I never heard of this book before? It's not terribly long (172 pages) but full of suspense and commentary on crime, fate and storytelling. Maybe because it was originally published in German in 1958 in Switzerland?

The framing device: a retired police superintendent offers to give a mystery writer a ride. On the way, the policeman explains how things do not always turn out to have happy endings. In fact, he knows a story about a crime that ended in a way that would never be adapted...more

Short crime novel framed as police detective telling story to fiction writer who speaks at a conference. The two ride back from the conference together, stopping at a gas station where the shabby drunk who fills their tank turns out to be a former police captain in pursuit of a the perpetrator of several child murders. No, you can't predict the ending. Yes, you'll be horrified. Different, short (we're all so busy...) and utterly satisfying.

But I must say that my favorite detail was the detectiv...more

Friedrich Dürrenmatt's The Pledge is a tale of the fall of a brilliant Swiss detective. The denouement is somewhat pat, but the analysis of the detective's psyche is very good. A little girl is savagely murdered and the detective makes a promise to her mother that he will find the killer. When a suspect is arrested and he subsequently commits suicide, everybody is satisfied that the case is closed, even the victim's parents. But the detective is not convinced, and against all evidence and in the...more

Dürrenmatt was born in the Emmental (canton of Bern), the son of a Protestant pastor. His grandfather Ulrich Dürrenmatt was a conservative politician. The family moved to Bern in 1935. Dürrenmatt began to study philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Zurich in 1941, but moved to the University of Bern after one semester. In 1943 he decided to become an author and dramati...more
