Somehow I managed to pick up a book which turned out to be a fifth-in-the-series. No idea that it wasn't the very first book, I quite enjoyed the story, actually. It really highlights how good children novels and is a stark contrast to nowadays YA novels. It's got elements of magic, humour and love just as much as most teen novels. Granted, the diction is less sophisticated but it doesn't take away how good this book was (even though I read this in grade 6).

As Juliet is trying to run away – literally – from an embarrassing memory, she wanders into a Magic Shop that she's never noticed before in her seaside village of Venus Harbor, she is given a pendant that she cannot resist. Oddly, when Juliet puts the pendant on, she begins to attract all kinds of followers, but mostly boys. Unfortunately, she cannot get the pendant off, and the longer she wears it, the deeper involved she becomes in a dangerous and magical mystery. Accompanied by two talking ra...more
The newest Magic Shop book, Juliet Dove, Queen of Love is also the only one without the benefit of Gary A. Lippincott's illustrations. They were infrequent but I hadn't thought before they were absent how much they added to the story (if you have it, just flip to the dinner-table scene in Skull of Truth and see Granny in mid-breast-shake, priceless).

I liked this much more than I expected to. I read it because I have been looking for age appropriate fiction based on Greek mythology for my six year old. He's not ready for Percy Jackson quite yet and I assumed this book would be too pre-teeny for him, what with being about a shy 6th grader who suddenly has the power of Cupid around her neck.
But Coville handles it without the schlock one usually finds in pre-teeny novels and, surprisingly, it's an intriguing book with enough placid adventure to...more

I stopped listening to the audio after cd2. It's good, but couldn't get into it. Grade 4-7–Bruce Coville returns to Mr. Elives' Magic Shop in this story of Juliet Dove, a shy middle school girl who suddenly finds herself the center of attention (Harcourt, 2003). While running away from some teasing girls, Juliet stumbles on the moveable magic shop, but instead of Mr. Elives, a mysterious woman is minding the shop. The woman, who turns out to be Eris, goddess of discord, offers Juliet a necklace...more
Juliet Dove doesn't have many friends. Although no one at school would believe it, she's painfully shy. So shy, in fact, that she uses sharp words to keep others from paying attention to her (which is how she's earned the nickname "Killer"). One day when running away from two girls at school, Juliet finds herself at the Magic Shop and she's drawn to a beautiful amulet. When the lady at the shop gives it to her, Juliet is surprised, but pleased. But when she puts it on, she discovers something st...more
A quick-moving light fantasy, complete with appearances from various Greek gods and goddesses and two talking rats. I listened to the audio and thought I was going to swerve off the road when a swarm of 6th-grade boys try to protect Juliet from Eris, the goddess of discord -- and succeed! Funny and sweet. A great recommendation for young readers not quite ready for Percy Jackson yet.
This entry in Bruce Coville's Magic Shop series started out strong but lost me about halfway through. Despite that dragging middle I soldiered on and it came to a satisfying conclusion despite a few squicky moments at the end involving grown men falling in love with a sixth-grade girl due to a magic spell.
A satisfactory entry in Coville's series, even if it doesn't live up to some of the other books.

Great entertaining book - it was fun how Greek mythology was interlaced in the story line. Juliet, herself, proved to become a strong, capable character, defying her worst fears for a better purpose. The rats were a bit annoying at times, but would be great sidekicks for a younger audience. I think that this would be an interesting series to continue.
This was a really cute book and my first full-cast audio experience (loved it!). It was funny to see how Juliet handles all of the boys who fall in love with her. The two rats who help her on her quest to break the enchantment are hilarious, too. The book has great ties to greek mythology and would be a good choice for the Lightning Thief crowd.
****"Fullcast" unabridged audiobook****
Summary (CIP): A shy twelve-year-old girl must solve a puzzle involving characters from Greek mythology to free herself from a spell which makes her irresistible to boys.
Review: It was fun to listen to the FullCast audio, but the voices of the rat characters were irritating to the point of distraction. I thought that shy Juliet was a relatable character, and I found the rest of her family to be quirky but real. I enjoyed the integration of mythology into th...more

Juliet gets an unwanted gift of a cameo necklace with love powers. What normally takes Author B. Coville 100 pages to tell is near 200 pages in this book. Just as delightful and filled with wonder. Great Read!
Juliet Dove Queen of Love was an okay book. Personally, I thought this book was a little confusing at parts. The beginning of the book was a little boring and I thought it was sorta dull. The middle of the book was very odd and I was not very fond of it. By the time I finished the book i was so lost and didn't know what was going on. I liked the story line but I was not pleased with how the author set up the story. Overall, I did not like this book.

I am currently listening to this on CD in the car. It is done by Full Cast Audio, which is fun - it is like listening to a play.
This was a cute story about a girl, Juliet Dove, who ends up with a magical locket that makes all the boys in town fall in love with her. While many girls might think it would be great to have so much male adoration, Juliet quickly learns it isn't all that fun. Juliet embarks on a journey of self-discovery as she attempts to break the lockets spell/curse.
