Surprised how much I liked this book - is all quite well conceived, and works very well as a whole that is built up from overlapping and interconnecting vignettes. It started very filmic, but as the layers build it becomes less so. I may like it in part as it somewhat echoes aspects of my childhood, and like the main character Lucy, never quite fitting in. It's a shame this is the author's only novel... It is difficult rating a book like this - probably only a three in the pantheon of literature ...more
I enjoyed that this was primarily the story of a town and the characters connected by their association with that place. The connected story structure worked well-- reminiscent of Sherwood Anderson's WINESBERG, OHIO, full of 'Americana', but with a pinch more quirkiness. (One review: "Thornton Wilder meets David Lynch" -- sums it up pretty well.)
