I'm not sure if this was supposed to make me laugh so much, but it did. I didn't necessarily think the situations were hee larry ous, but the author's turn of phrase was wonderful. It reminded me of my friend Val who just says things but somehow you're always cracking up and she seems surprised (but not offended) that her straightforward descriptions and observations are so damn funny.

i love this book. i read it a decade ago, and recently re-read it after having a momment with the decadent eileen myles. eileen myles does stream of conciousness ramblin' better than any other, including those that want desperately to be her. her word choice always seems prudent and poignant. and i remembered bits of the book over a decade.

in my recently over-explored genre of "lesbian tales of my mother," this one ranked higher due to myles's notoriously sexy swagger and accompanying crotch shot cover photo, as well as to her massaging of sentences into bite-sized treats enjoyed in repetition.

she opens up with artaud, i like her already. well, i did.
i couldn't get into this book, and largely i blame its tone and style of writing. it sounds like me, me on a god-awful day.

Raw - rough around the edges in the best sort of way. I could taste the things Myles was writing about. Her loyalty to the truth forces one to stare, unblinking at the reality of (her) life.

Written in a cool, dispassionate, spare, almost poetic fashion, this is an excellent book. I only gave it three stars on account of I prefer rollicking comedic phantasmagorias.
