This is a great book to get children excited about the library as Fancy Nancy describes going to the library as "It is like getting a present for a week!" (Jane O'Connor, 2009, p.6). I also like the fun way she adds in large words and then describes them in a way that the kids understand. Like other reviewers mentioned Fancy Nancy also learns an important lesson at the end. The reason I gave the book such a low review was because they teach children the wrong pronunciation of Sacajawea. O'Connor...more

I read the original Fancy Nancy book to my nieces, and, at the time, thought that the effect of Nancy stopping every other word to explain that "That's a fancy word for so-and-so" was a little annoying. Having now read several of the early readers, I can honestly say that it is MUCH less annoying when you're not the one reading the book aloud!

My niece (who is six and entering the first grade in a week!) found this book easy enough to read with only a little help from me. Help largely consisted o...more

This is a fun book in the Fancy Nancy series, where Nancy has a homework assignment to do a book report, but ends up spending more time on decorating her book cover than she does on the report. It's a fun story, but also provides a good lesson for kids.

This book is great for student adding to their vocabulary or new site words. I like the way the book used the word "select", and defined it on the same page. She uses words that students would not know the meaning of, and then tells the meaning of the words. This is a easy read book, and easy to understand. There is a cute dictionary at the end of the book with the vocabulary words.

Vocabulary words used:

Biography - a story about a real person
Crestfallen - sad and ashamed
Dazzling - eye-popping,m...more

Love the way Jane O'Connor helps kids develop their vocab in a fun an easy way. In this Fancy Nancy book Nancy has to write a book report after selecting a book from the library (select is a fancy word for pick)(: Nancy spends a ton of time making her cover super duper fancy, everyone keeps reminding her that the book report is what's really important. In the end Nancy learns an important lesson about setting priorities and procrastnation.

Nancy is very excited about her 1st book report. She works really hard to do a good job on the cover, but the written report itself is lacking. With encouragement from her teacher, Nancy is able to overcome her dilema. I love the Fancy Nancy series because the definitions and synonyms they provide can help readers to expand their vocabulary. These books would always have a place in my classroom library.

This book is good to read in class to help children to select books from the library to read and get ideas from history of another people to write about a specific person, hero, famous person,or artist.
Learning experience:Take children to the library to choose books for read, and write a short story about the book that they selected.

Writing can be difficult and it's easy to put it off as Nancy finds out in this story when she gets caught up creating a book report cover but neglects the report itself. There's a very valuable lesson when the teacher tells her to just tell the class about the story. It's the key to good writing.

This is a great story if you are introducing to students the idea of a book report. Nancy spends so much time on the cover of her book report that she forgets to do the actual book report. This book also has a good bit of history in it with the main example as Sacajawea.

This Fancy Nancy title was a lesson in time management. Nancy picks a book on Sacajawea for her book report--she spends too much time on her cover and none on written report itself. Her teacher is kind-hearted and allows her to tell the class about the book.

Nancy learns that even though it is fun to make a dazzling book report cover, you need to give yourself enough time to write the actual report. As always, there are some good vocabulary words (i.e. "fancy" words) to learn as you read. Good, good fun.

Ok it is true I think I really am Fancy Nancy. I would have spent hours on a cover and not really want to do the writing. I am afraid the teacher was a little easier on her than reality would show but she is Nancy. I love this reader series. Grades 1+

So recently, my daughter has become extremely interested in Fancy Nancy. So, we have been reading some of the Fancy Nancy series. This series is lots of fun and all the heart warming moments are a nice touch to the rather flouncy, fancy moments.

Fancy Nancy Is just the coolest! This book is good and I learned a new word "Crestfallen" who knew??? It means sad and ashamed! I think I am going to use that more often! Thanks Nancy for teaching me such exciting word!
Beth
This is a great book to use for creating excitement about book report projects. Fancy artwork is nice but explaining the content, Sacajawea, too, is best. Fancy Nancy has no reason to feel “crestfallen.”

Early Readers. I love that Fancy Nancy explains the real meaning of some of her fancy words - and that she likes to use fancy words in the first place. Great way to promote vocabulary.
Sherry
Good book for girls (aged 5-7). Expands a child's vocabulary and encourages creative students to feel good about their early academic effort in school.

Little Kid Reaction: Although this was too easy for our second grader, she loves Nancy and always likes to find out what she's up to. This one prompted her to pull out some of her other Fancy Nancy favorites.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a cute story and a good lesson. It will be a nice one to pull out again when its time to do book reports and similar projects. Nancy spent so much time on the fun part that she didn't get the important stuff done.

I really like Fancy Nancy, but this reader just didn't feel like it followed the pattern of the other ones quite as well. Still cute, though,
Andrea
Time management is important and Nancy forgets that the report is more about words than the art that accompanies it. Cute book
Karen
Another good book from my daughter's favorite series. I especially liked the lesson taught in this book.

Since the publication of Fancy Nancy, Jane O'Connor's closet now boasts so many boas, tiaras, and sparkly ensembles that sometimes friends do not recognize her on the street. She still resides (that's a fancy word for lives) in New York City with her family and their canine companion, Arrow. --from the publisher's website
