Madame Campan's eyewitness account of life in the service of Marie Antoinette makes fascinating reading. She is not entirely uncritical of her royal mistress, but mainly sympathetic towards her, and it is easy to see through her writings that in many respects marie Antoinette was maligned - she was not nearly as extravagent as she has often been accused of being for instance.
