John Winchester's journal won't do much for you if you're not a fan of Supernatural, but if you are, it's an ultimate geeky resource. It contains all the bits we've seen from the journal in the show, at least up to 2009, and lots of little extra tidbits and stories about the young boys. We learn about the first time Sam walked -- took a few steps towards Dean and fell on his face -- and stuff like the fact that Sam is an evangelical Mac user, Dean's first solo hunt involved the ghosts of lesbian...more
Finally finished reading this last night. As a big fan of the series, I had high hopes for this prequel (maybe impossibly high hopes). I could have marked it down for feeling a bit disjointed in places but the more I think about it, the more that added to the effect of it being a personal journal of a traumatised individual.
What made me mark it down was that I felt some parts could have been elaborated much more, whilst other parts seemed laboriously dragged out. I felt it had a solid and believ...more

The book, in and of itself, was interesting. A lot of lore and information on mythology and (especially) demonology- if you want culturally specific spirits, creatures and the like, this one's definitely for you. I was particularly facsinated with a brief period in the book where he fixated on water spirits and the puca, a mythical horse that's said to appear on Nov. 1st and take unsuspecting riders on a hellish romp and then give them advice if it feels like it. Sounds pretty badass to me- made...more
Yes, I'm a rabid fangirl, and yes, I completely loved this book. Hell, I'll take every bit of additional canon that I get my hands on, because this show has yet to produce canon that isn't made of awesome (unlike other shows, where you really don't want to look at canon too closely, especially not the extra-tv-kind)

My hear bleeds for John, for the hurt that is always there in and between the lines, but also for the boys, because over the years the hurt turns into obsession, and well, we all know...more

Within the last year I have become a big fan of the tv show "Supernatural". I've tried to stay away from the tie-in books after attempting to read "Bone Key" and after Dean reffered to Sam as "Sammich" I decided that I was done with the genre; I could find better characterization in fanfiction, thank you very much.

But I had been interested in the journal, thinking it would be interesting and it was.

I found it fascinating the way the authors painted John's grief morphing into obsession with each...more

I just had to get this book because I love Supernatural so much and now that I'm impatiently waiting for season nine (more Cas! Bobby's back! I can't handle it!!) I needed my little fix during the summer. While some parts of this book written in journal entries were awesome and cool to read, overall it was a little disappointing. There were major information dumps, which I understand because it's written to be like John's actually journal, full of information about creatures out there in the wor...more
For the fans of the TV show Supernatural, this may seem like a great title to pick. The much-hyped journal of the Winchester brothers' often-absent father is like the Holy Grail for hunters. Unfortunately Irvine's take misses the mark on many points.

Many of the contents of the book hinted at throughout the series do not appear. Other events included in the book so boldly foreshadow some of the shows biggest revelations that you wonder how Sam and Dean hadn't figured them out earlier.

Then there's...more
I love the TV show "Supernatural"- the two brothers Dean and Sam are some of the best acted TV show characters to come along in a long time! I have a total crush on the older brother Dean!!! I am loving this book so far because it gives so much background as to their dad's quest to find out what killed their mother. This book is strictly for fans of the show and if anyone is interested in discovering what it is all about then you can borrow seasons 1 and 2 and I will soon have season 3. For thos...more
I read this book only because I'm a big fan of SUPERNATURAL. I like the cover, the content settings, and the illustrations, but the content itself is mostly blearrghh (I was like skip-skip-skip through some parts because they're not interesting).

And I have this one question!
In the book, John Winchester mentioned that Dean has begun solo hunting since he's a teenager and it was before Sam left the family. But in the series, when Dean sought Sam out to help him look for their father, Sam seemed su...more

As tie-ins go, this one is very well done. If you're a fan of Supernatural and have always wondered what was in John Winchester's journal, here's your chance to find out.

There was more exposition from John as he details his thoughts about losing Mary and taking care of the boys through the years, but it was nice. Another reviewer said the journal makes John come off as more of a jerk than he did on the show. I actually think it makes him seem like less of one. Even though he and Sammy were alway...more
Love this book.
It very insightful about who John was and what he went though after Mary's death you definitely feel through out the book that John loved Mary and misses her with every entry that he writes in his journal. I felt John's pain and sadness over losing his wife and how much he struggle to be a hunter but not lose sight that he was a father of two young boys.

I did expect a little more backstory than what I got, but the info on the Supernatural lore was really good, and the little bit of Winchester history that was shown was great.

Especially after reading this book, I will always defend my hatred for John Winchester. Not the character, because he is solid and has a purpose in the story, but John the person. He managed to win the Worst Father of the Year award for 22 years, making children play with guns and kill before they could even have a driver's...more

Ever since I found out Supernatural has novels as well, I got very excited. I got even more excited when I found out about John Winchester’s Journal, the book Sam and Dean use a lot in the first couple of seasons (not sure what happens to it in the later seasons, seeing as I haven’t watched any further than s3). I saw this book at the Forbidden Planet in Newcastle, and I knew I had to take it with me.

John Winchester’s Journal is about John...more
I received this book as a gift for my birthday a few years back from a relative who knows that I LOVE Supernatural. So it saddens me to have to say that this tie-in is, to be frank, pretty bad. I had high hopes for it. I mean, who wouldn't want to read all the knowledge and secrets written in Papa Winchester's journal?

The journal is full of John's entries detailing hunts, special occasions with Sam and Dean, and remembrances of Mary. It is also chock full of his "notes" on all things supernatura...more
A book like this really should get negative stars.

On hearing that there was a book purporting to be John Winchester's Journal, my first thought was how boring is that for a reading experience? But then someone on my flist put up an excerpt from it and was talking about how fascinating it was, and I am a total sucker so I bought it and started reading it. I think it was Doris Lessing who said that as soon as you lose interest in a book you should put it down and read something else, and I totall...more

Just a quick reminder: 3 stars means I did like it, quite a bit, but I think it was lacking in spots. I have two main reasons for liking it. A.) the great concept and b.) there aren't many options for Supernatural fans who want to read pre-series John Winchester stories. Obviously, this book is for fans of the Supernatural tv series--outside readers would not be able to catch up very easily. I would recommend this purchase for fans and writers of fanfiction who are curious about the mythos in th...more

***This review will contain spoilers, but nothing you wouldn't know if you watched the first few seasons of Supernatual.***

Fans of the TV show Supernatural will probably really like this. This book in a TV tie-in, so if you don't watch Supernatural then reading this book would be pretty pointless.

Appearance of the novel is pretty good. It looks and even kind of feels like a journal. There are pictures, diagrams and more to look at.

It has a lot of Supernatural fans would love. It includes everyt...more

This book was based on the journal of John Winchester from the tv show Supernatural. I was excited to get this book and read it, because taking a look into John's journal is probably something every Supernatural fan would love to do.

As far as expectations of this book I had, based on what has been shown on the tv show, I'm not sure if this book fully met them. Seeing into John's life and emotions about the events surrounding Mary's death was interesting. It was also great to learn more of Sam an...more
Any fan of Supernatural will adore John Winchester's Journal because, even though it isn't strictly accurate to the one seen in seasons one and two, it gives each reader an insight into Daddy Winchester's mindset. It finally makes us understand how a man can be so cold and raise his two children like soldiers while then alienating the youngest because he wanted to be 'normal' and go to college. As a huge fan of the show, I'm not a keen fan of Daddy Winchester because I believed him to be a cold...more

Unterstützt wer...more

beware: ketidakkonsistenan penggunaan huruf kapital, spoiler gifs from later seasons of supernatural.

Jurnal john winchester disebut2 di sepanjang serial supernatural. menurut hint selama serial isinya adalah petualangan catatan john tentang dunia supranatural yang ditemuinya selama bertualang menjadi pemburu hantu (yes, this is a profession, deal with it). jadi, buku ini menjadi primbon utama sam and dean saat mereka mentok dalam berburu hantu.
dengan logika demikian, yang kepikiran buku ini akan...more

This book made me angry. Not because it's a bad book, it's anything but. In fact it's a very good book. It was interesting reading johns point of view, seeing his reasons behind doing what he did. BUT OH MY GOSH IS HE ANNOYING! I hated Johns character in the show(I'm sorry but no flash backs are going to change that) and my friend told me to read this saying it would maybe make me like him. I HATE HIM EVEN MORE!

He whines and has more angst than souless Sam and argh he's annoying!

I love the TV show Supernatural, but I really couldn't get into this book. It felt like it was trying too hard to combine a journal of the Winchester's adventures with an encyclopaedia of Supernatural creatures, and in doing so, managed to be neither. I would have preferred more information about what the Winchester's were doing, whereas instead John was only counting up the years that Mary had been dead, how many years they would have been married, how old Dean was, and how old Sam was. I ended...more

I can't really review it...
But I'll say it wasn't how I expected it to be. I thought there would be much more insight than what I got. But I do feel like I understand John Winchester better and I learned a lot more about Dean and Sam's relationship from when they were young right up to when Sam leaves for college. I like that there are other characters talked about that aren't mentioned in the show and Mary is more "alive" in a way. The way she's talked about here makes me miss her even more th...more

Get to know the Supernatural creatures through the eyes of John Winchester. If you are a Supernatural fan like me, you would know that it had always been through the eyes and experiences of Sam and Dean. As viewers of the show, we would witness the brothers fighting out-of-this-world creatures with their knowledge that they've learned through the years of experience, and of course, through their dad. Maybe you've always wondered what's in the journal the Winchester brothers always consult with i...more
It goes without saying that I adore Supernatural and it's literally my favourite thing ever, so naturally I would also love reading John's journal. I loved reading his real thoughts on Sam and Dean, and my favourite bits were when he wrote about them. This was what I wanted more of though: Sam and Dean and their relationship with John before we meet them. I also would have liked this to have been a proper journal type book like in the show, but you can't have everything.
I loved reading this ^_^ Granted, it was written in 2009 so there are some things that we've learned in the show that should be in this book, but overall it's wonderful. It's depressing to see Sam and Dean growing up how they did, to see John changing slowly into a man he never wanted to be. The facts collected about myths and monsters are also really interesting and would certainly help when writing fan fiction.
