A very good collection of essays detailing the developments in English scholarship from the time of the Tutors through until the middle of the 19th century. Much of the work done during this period focuses on the creation of grammars and dictionaries, and thus so do the essays, though there is a very good essay on the introduction of Anglo-Saxon poetry into the literary tradition.
