Much of the book is commentary by editor and tranlator and essays accompanying, good for history. Entertaining stories, ritualistic language (of blessed memory, God is his rock, may his family prosper, son of, father of, etc., etc.)

Model for character in some recent book or movie or both, can't remember.
Famous orator and writer, cursed by gambling habit.
