Any intro to jazz is going to disappoint some jazz lover somehow, but Szwed does better than most all other writers in getting down to the basics in clear language for the beginning jazz listener, and jazz thinker. I use excerpts from this in classes about American culture, where students have only the vaguest idea of what jazz could be. It works a trick! The way of explaining very complex musical concepts in accessible language is a wonder and a great help. This book is not just a guide, but it ...more

John Szwed's book celebrates the diversity of jazz and jazz styles. Rather than reading out certain musicians or approaches, he reads nearly everyone into the jazz tradition. Consequently, Szwed covers nearly all the jazz styles that are typically excluded from jazz histories (e.g. dixieland, jazz fusion, jazz rock, smooth jazz and European jazz) as well as the mainstream styles. He eschews the narrative that places the birthplace of jazz in New Orleans and emphasizes less than others the patern ...more

A pretty good overview of Jazz. Any writer of a subject like jazz has to pick and choose what he will talk about and what to leave out. Everyone will have some quibble, but overall it's a decent introduction. It is a little outdated since it came out before the era of iTunes and Spotify.

Listened to as an audiobook. It would've been better with musical examples, but I found it to be a good supplement to a Great Coursse that I listened to on jazz by Bill Messenger.

Jazz 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Jazz is a great starting point on the path to Jazz connoisseurship. The experienced listener and student on Jazz history will not gain much from the body of the book, but should still crack the book just for it appendices, which provide disographies, biographies, histories, appearances of jazz in popular culture, amongst other things.

I get this book in Indonesia translation.
(+) good book about jazz history
(+) the writer is a Professor, but also a musician! So He can tell us both the history of jazz and the "music" in it.

(-) Indonesian Translation sucks! I'll get the original one..

Uh btw. after you read this, try to watch "Ray", a biography movie about Ray Charles. :)

John F. Szwed's Jazz 101. I started my classical collection with Classical Music: The 50 Greatest Composers and Their 1,000 Greatest Works by Phil G. Goulding; I'm planning to use this to grow my jazz collection.

This was a good book for jazz as a whole including culture, clubs, and instruments. It was fairly light on listening material for each time period/style which was what I was most interested in.

The history of Jazz is a hard topic to take on. Rarely is it done so lyrically or with such honest sensibilities as here.
