I watched Betty White read this story online at http://storylineonline.net
Harry is a dog that just hates baths! When he hears his family running the bath, he takes his brush, digs a hole in the back yard, buries it, and runs away. He plays in the dirtiest places he can find until he turns from a white dog with black spots into a black dog with white spots. The title of Gene Zion's 1956 Harry the Dirty Dog says it all. Harry dislikes cleanliness. He hides the scrub brush whenever it's time to take a bath. To Harry, filthiness is next to dogliness. So he runs away and indulges in joyous, untidy rebellion. His dirty doings are depicted in a series of short, simple sentences and corresponding drawings: playing in a street, at the railroad, with other dogs. Even in a coal chute! In a humorous twist, all of the grime transforms Harry from a white dog w

Summary: "Harry was a white dog with black spots who liked everything, except getting a bath." Taking matters into his own paws, he buries his family's scrubbing brush in the backyard and runs away from home before they can wrangle him into the tub. Harry gets dirty playing in the street, dirtier at the railroad, and dirtier still playing tag with the other dogs. When sliding down the coal chute, he actually changes from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots! Of

Harry the Dirty Dog’s cover made me think that this was going to be a story reminiscent of The Prince and the Pauper. It shows a picture with two dogs facing each other, one white with black spots and the other black with white spots. I was wrong. This is actually two pictures of the same dog before and after his adventures in avoiding a bath.

This book reenforces the idea of "appreciate what you have". Harry didn't like baths, so one day, he buried the scrub brush and went around town and got very very dirty in retaliation. At the end of his fun day, Harry returned home, where his family didn't recognize him. This made Harry very sad, and he realized that he would do whatever it took in order for them to take him back. In this case, what he needed to do was to take a bath. Hopefully this story would teach my students to lis

Harry is a white dog with black spots who hates baths. When he hears he is supposed to have a bath, he runs away from home. He runs through construction sites and plays in the mud. He gets extremely dirty. Finally, he realizes that having a bath is not such a bad thing. He returns home and gets all clean.

This book has very enjoyable graphics, and it draws the reader in with the simple, non-repetitive story of a dog who left home wanting to avoid a bath. It has the feel of a story being told at a grandparent’s knee – engaging and yet uncomplicated.
This could be used to discuss or write about things that children do not like to do but know they need to do. There could be a discussion about the behavior of dogs or pets in general.

I adored this book as a young child. It’s written for very young children, but I still enjoy it as an adult. It’s a very clever story and told with a lot of humor and warmth. I like all the Harry The Dirty Dog books but this one was the first I read and it remains my favorite. It holds up completely over time – a genuine classic.

This is another book that I love mostly because I remember it from my own childhood, and since senility (or early-onset-Alzheimer's) has taken most of my memories away, I love the ones I have retained.
I don't think it's a good book for kids at all, unless you've already taught your child that running away is a solution to anything. If you're a crap parent and your child threatens to run away anytime he/she doesn't want to do something and you don't know what to do because you have no More...

Harry the Dirty Dog has a lot of interesting elements to start it seems like they used water based colors and the lines give it a sense of feeling and motion. The water colors have a suitableness that i think is useful when the book includes a family. The elements in this book i think are the color palette used which are greens and oranges for the trees and wood objects. The background is white and some of the pages have run on pages which helps you create a story of your own before you read the

Read this as a child and almost know it by heart. For every child (who hates baths) and every dog owner whose dog hates baths. A true classic and a must for every childhood library.

I bought this board book at a discount store last year, not having read it previously although I was familiar with the book. Harry is a lovable dog who hates baths, so he runs away and gets really dirty. When he returns home, his family doesn't recognize him because his coat has 'changed colors', so to speak. It isn't until they give him a bath that they realize he really is their beloved Harry.

This book is great for young children because it is filled with ideas that children can relate to- the main character is a dog, the idea of not wanting to take a bath, and the comfort and love of a family. I think this book is also good because it hints slightly, without being "in your face blunt" at racial issues. It shows that just because Harry changed his appearance from a white dog to a black dog, doesnt mean that Harry himself actually changed. He was still the same dog, capable

Harry doesn't want to take a bath, so he runs away from home. But he gets so dirty that his family doesn't recognize him! How can he show that he belongs to them?
While I'm not generally a fan of animal books, kids definitely are. They enjoyed watching Harry's transformation from clean to dirty and finding him on each page of the book. The plot is simple and easy to follow and the text is broken up enough not to make reading seem overwhelming. Most of the words are easy enough to sound o More...

This book is about a dog called, Harry. He was a white dog with black spots. He enjoyed getting dirty but did not like to be bathed. He dug a hole in the family's backyard and hid the brush they would use to give him a bathe. He got so dirty one day that he could hardly be recognized... (You'll have to read it to enjoy the rest of this story).

Dog lovers everywhere will enjoy this story about Harry, a white dog with black spots who becomes a black dog with white spots when he manages to get himself very dirty. The happy ending makes it a perfect read-aloud for younger kids, and the complex illustrations offer opportunities for lots of discussion outside the text. This updated edition offers much more color, but the original edition provides the same great story. No one can resist such an agreeable main character with just enough mo

Love the classic story.
I was however disappointed that the quality of board book version I bought. Board books are designed to live a hard life with a young child - but X-man began destroying this book within 10 seconds of picking it up. The board itself is pretty soft - easily indented with a bite. The surface layer (with the printing on it) is a shiny surface, which easily comes away from the soft board. Thus after one read this book now has significant portions of the back More...

I got this book for my three-year old William to enjoy, but he hasn’t showed very much interest in it. I thought he’d love a story about a dog who, like him, doesn’t like to bathe. I liked it as a kid. Maybe it’s too hard for him to follow the story in English, maybe he’s still too young. It’s a great story though, and I’ll try reading it to him again. At the moment he’s much more interested in repetitive books, in his own Norwegian. This, of course, is neither.

This book was pretty cute. It's about a dog named Harry that hates getting baths. Eventually he becomes so dirty that his family no longer recognizes him, even after performing all of his old tricks. Eventually they do though when he finally decides he wants to take a bath. It's a good book for beginning readers. Although not the most interesting storyline, it's still pretty cute and I think kids would like it. Reinforces the idea that kids need to take baths, too!

I'm giving this an extra star because my 4-year-old has taken this to bed with him for the last few nights. He is loving this book and will be very sad when it has to go back to the library.
It's cute and funny. The illustrations are simple. Harry is a bit of a naughty dog, but we live with a naughty dog so I let that slide a bit.
My 7-year-old has read this to his younger brother every day for the last week so I consider it a beginning reader book as well.

Harry the Dirty Dog is one of my favorite childhood books! This book reminds reminds me of my dog who sadly passed away :( , because my dog didn't like to take showers. However, my dog didn't hide the bath brush like Harry did. It was hilarious how hid family didn't recognize him after he was so dirty. And, it was even funnier when Harry begged for a bath! I really love this book not only because of the story, but because it reminds me of my doggy.

Harry is a great dog, except for one thing--he hates to take baths. So at bathtime, Harry runs away and has a ton of fun getting absolutely filthy. When he returns home, though, he is so dirty that his family doesn't recognize him. How can Harry prove to his family who he really is? I remember liking these illustrations when I was a little girl. There's just something about Harry that appeals to kids. (Maybe it's the "no baths" policy....)

This is a very cute book about a dog that didn't want to get a bath and later became so dirty his family didn't recognize him. I know I can remember the times when I was little and I ran to hide whenever I heard the bath water running. There are some children who can relate to doing this themselves.
1. Good read aloud
2. Perfect recommendation to students who love dogs
3. Good for teaching a lesson about hygiene

I really like this childrens book. I thought it was a very cute story. Any little kid would get this story and love it.
In this story Harry is a dog who hates to take baths and loves to get dirty. So one day he sneaks off and gets even dirtier then ever. When he returns his owners dont know who he is. He loves them so much he has to find a way to show them its him. Will he do it? read it and find out!
