Leo Lionni's humorous story, "An Extraordinary Egg" tell about three frogs that live on Pebble Island. One of the frogs, Jessica the enchanted explorer happens to wander upon what her sisters are convinced is a chicken egg. The humor lies in that even after the egg hatches into an alligator they ignorantly continue to refer to their new friend as a chicken. Children will get a kick out of this continuous chicken reference. Children can interact with the story remaining engaged and

It's an extraordinary day on Pebble Island for three frogs when one of them discovers a beautiful white egg. They've never seen a chicken egg before, but they're sure that's what this must be. So when the egg hatches and out crawls a long green, scaly creature, they naturally call it . . . a chicken! Though I really enjoyed this book, something seemed off and so I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. The illustrations are typical of Lionni's work. In this story, a frog finds a "rock" which the other frogs call a chicken egg. So when it hatches, it turns out to be something other than a chicken. However, they never really realize that. This I think is the problem for me. I think for an adult it was a great joke. Need to think about this from a child's perspective.

It was X day at story time. This was alright story about an adventurous frog who thinks everything she finds is extraordinary. But this time she really finds something special, an egg. The second half of the story is about the alligator that comes from the egg, though the frogs think it is a chicken. The way they call it a chicken was funny, but otherwise this book was just okay.

Marilyn and August are not interested in the wonder Jessica shares. One day, Jessica brings back a huge pebble, but the others know that this is an egg. The frogs are convinced that it is a chicken, but when the bird leads them to the mother, they are surprised that the baby is actually an alligator.

About three frogs who find an egg and it hatches. They call it a baby chicken but it really is a alligator. A fun story to use with kids in the classroom. Can use when talking about animals and those who come from eggs. But also fun to use in writing workshop to show a fun story form.

"An Extraordinary Egg" is a humorous story with intriguing illustrations. Students can make predictions about what they think will hatch from the egg, and then discover if they were right or wrong. The book shows the reader that sometimes things are not always what they appear to be.

It's such a welcome change when authors treat children like capable readers. Take a cue from Leo and leave some gaps in the story, people! The chicken mistake is never addressed, which is fun, funny and fabulous.
A forerunner to Arlene Sardine, I do believe.

20 month old kiddo is too young to appreciate this story yet, though he's the one who picked it from the library shelf. We'll have to read it again when he's a little older. He did like the pictures of frogs, though didn't get past the first few pages.

The little ones think it is hilarious when (SLIGHT SPOILER HERE) the two frogs keep calling the baby alligator a chicken. "THAT'S NOT A CHICKEN!" they kept interrupting the story to tell me.

I loved this book. Author of Swimmy, Leo Lionni warms our hearts with this whimsical tale about three frogs who find an alligator egg and they think it is a chicken. Your kids will love it...and you will too.

The unique friendship between Jessica, the frog, and Chicken, the baby alligator, in this story is very endearing! Pretty illustrations as well. I smiled all the way through this book.

My kids laughed so much when I read this book. My 6 year old and 3 year old asked me to read this book every night until we returned it to the library. It was a really cute book.

I always use this for my egg story time. Also, it won high reviews from my husband when he read it to my eldest years ago.

Another children's book the kids and I enjoyed equally. Okay, maybe I liked it better than they did... I love this author.

Adorable. Oh when chickens hatch and their mummies call them something silly like "alligator." Good times.

This is a book about three frogs who are out to discover something new. The largest discovery they make is a "chicken" egg, but to their surprise it hatches into an alligator. They go on adventures and Chicken becomes a hero. This alligator remains being seen as a chicken until he returns to his worried mother.
I loved this book for its creativity and friendship between unique individuals.

Parts of this book made me smile and I was amused at the little frogs' "knowledge" of the mysterious egg. I liked how the story progressed, but thought the ending was a little forced and felt sorry for Jessica. I would probably still recommend though.

This book is a genuinely funny and sweet story about friends, chickens, and how we really know what we know. We read it every day of our two-week trip and never got tired of it. The last line is one of my favorite lines of any children's book: And the three friends couldn't stop laughing. It's great!

This is a charming, funny book, with unique illustrations. My son was a bit young for it (i don't think he "got it" that the alligator was really an alligator and not a chicken), but he requested it several times. I look forward to checking it from the library again when he is a little older.

This is one of my favorite children's books. Every time I read it to my kids (from my youngest to my oldest... even now), we all end up laughing and laughing together. It is so silly and clever. This book was a gift when I had my second baby, and I'm so glad I was introduced to it.

There are several books which deal with a family/person hatching an egg which doesn't contain a baby from their own species. Makes for some good fun.
We all liked this book, both the story and the pictures.

Reading this book aloud to my students is sometimes quite funny - they can't figure out why the frogs keep calling the crocodile a chicken!
I think this is a sweet, classic story.

If a four-year old's laughter is any indication of a good book, this one is near the top of the charts. My daughter Emma enjoyed this thoroughly.
