People who love satire
A biting satire of the publishing industry, the story focuses on a cynical editor at a huge publishing house in New York who, desperate to find a hit book that will save his job, green lights a sprawling self-help book that promises to help one lose weight, stop smoking, increase sex drive and every other problem imaginable. To his surprise, the book really is a hit because it really works. Suddenly, everyone is reading it and losing their vices, leading happier and more fulfilled lives. But t...more

Ironically, I read this sharply satirical stab at the self/help industry when I was interning at Harper Collins. Suffice it to say I did love this love book. Here's more from a professional.
"It has been said--possibly by the sort of homily-peddling guru that Ferguson attacks so masterfully in his debut novel--that there are many routes to happiness. The general effect of reading this razor-sharp satire on the self-help industry is to understand that these routes lead us nowhere, except...more

Me too.
Read this book. It's hilarious, it's realistic (in the most outrageously allegorical way), it's snappy and ugly, it's pissed off and dejected, it's decadent and insecure. It's hellbent on showing that real life is gr...more

I borrowed a copy of this book when I was on a camping trip, injured, and could not join in with the other folks' fun.
By the time I was half way through this, I didn't care.
It's hard to explain what it is about, really, without giving it away - the main character works for a publishers and they receive a manuscript that appears to be worthless but when it hits the streets it takes on cult status, and takes over everything. I haven't put that very well - read it and you'll see what I mean!...more

Excellent! The writers voice is definitly connected to the modern age, and the characters are utterly relatable. This novel also makes you think, in almost the same way 1984 did, but only instead of government, it makes you think of emotions. We all strive for happiness but never think what we would do if we got there. Those rare few who do experience happiness find themselves bored after awhile (for the most part) but this book brings it to a worldwide scale and makes it hsyterical. The predicim...more

This had some extremely funny moments, mostly at the beginning of the book. I particularly liked the various descriptions of editors - which were very accurate - and the comment (which I may be slightly misquoting) that 'as a science, marketing is one step above reading chicken entrails'.
Overall, though, in spite of many belly laughhs, the book misses its target because it's just too black and white.

Happiness TM is a funny book, but not in the laugh-out-loud way. Will Ferguson pokes fun at not only the publishing business, but also society in general and people's desire to 'better' themselves, but not wholly.
Ferguson introduces my favourite character way too late in the book and then gets rid of him rather quickly too. Otherwise, it's a pretty good read.

A delightfully amusing satire of the self-help book market. What if someone actually wrote a self-help book that worked? It would totally destroy the self-help book industry. Ferguson is exceptionally humorous as he pulls no punches when poking fun at self-help books and the book industry in general.

Fantastic laugh-out-loud book. In some ways I rather wish that the story would happen in real life! The turn of events is just so ridiculous & Ferguson tells it so you cannot help but be swept away into this perfect, or apparently perfect, new world.

On my all-time favorite list. I've read it numerous times and it never disappoints. Deadly accurate satire that entertains your pants off. Favorite phrase: "chain-smoking squirrels." What's not to love?

Seriously, one of the smartest funny books I've ever read. I loaned it to a new Mother who promptly chastized me because I had, "no idea how much it hurts to laugh hystarically while breastfeeding".

Great book and an easy read with a really good tempo. Smart and smug- this book a true examination of what happens when we have nothing to whine about. Totally love this book. So so funny

Very funny, fast and furious. Anyone in publishing will probably cringe as the stereotypes. Satire is mean-spirited and right on- just the way I like it.

This book was an impulse buy in the bargain racks and worth it! It's entertaining for 'word-nerds' and a good dose of cynicism. Very quick and easy read!

A funny smart book, full of (un)lovable characters, about the extreme consequences of a self-help book actually working. A wonderful read.

He writes like I talk! I have never laughed out loud harder or more often than when I read this book. Even a reread is still hilarious.

An entertaining fantasy about a self-help book that actually works, with far-reaching consequences. I laughed out loud several times.
