If you have some familiarity with Zen Buddhism, recognizing Beckett's concerns with the ego-centric samsara existence, the trap he finds himself in and his inability to write himself out of it, is straightforward, and Foster uses plenty of examples from Beckett's texts to make the affinity clear. Equally valuable for those not as familiar with Zen Buddhism is that Foster weaves examples from Beckett and Zen texts in such a way that he offers a primer on both.
