"Ghosts" is the story of Helen Alving, a widow who is haunted by the many mistresses of her deceased husband and by her son who has inherited syphilis from his philandering father. "Ghosts" is a scathing indictment of Victorian society in which Ibsen refutes the notion that if one simply fulfills one's duty rather than following one's desires then a good and noble life wil...more

Gengångare is among Henrik Ibsen best known plays and i could clearly see why. It was a subtle play with depth and it had great social commentary on Ibsens times. A scathing commentary on the double standard in gender roles, morality. Very critical on priests, church, patriarchal society that stand for the old ways. It had themes like that other than the clear ones in the story that drive foreward the story.

Not as modern as plays in his times when it comes to form, layout, characters but themes wise...more

Now this is what theatre should be - I haven't actually "read" this particular edition but listend to the audiobook you can find for free here (http://archive.org/details/ghosts_120...) and certainly the highlight of the experience springs from the effort and excellence of the cast, each with their very own style and character, that brings into the narrative both drama and nausea.
The story is a short huis-clos unfolding the tightly packaged symphony of family secrets in a Scandinavian town, noth...more

a play about Mrs. Alving a widow, who was accused by Pastor Manders,of failing in providing enough moral guidance to her son Oswald....

MANDERS. Just as you once disowned a wife's duty, so you have since
disowned a mother's.

MRS. ALVING. Ah--!

MANDERS. You have been all your life under the dominion of a
pestilent spirit of self-will. The whole bias of your mind has been
towards insubordination and lawlessness. You have never known how to
endure any bond. Everything that has weighed upon you in life you

This went from really liking it to just ok pretty quickly. The dialogue and characters were good, and I could see how Ibsen was a little scandalous back then with the touch of Luke and Leia going on. And what seemed like Vader, Leia too for that matter. I like Mrs. Alving's quote, "I am half inclined to think we are all ghosts, Mr. Manders. It is not only what we have inherited from our fathers and mothers that exists again in us, but all sorts of old dead ideas and all kinds of old dead beliefs...more

Ghosts was read for my EN102 class. The play is exceptionally dark and deals with problems such as incest, venereal disease, extramarital affairs, etc. The introduction said it was one of the first plays to deal with such dark matters and was written to address situations where it might be best to divorce, essentially.

The play raised interesting questions of morality, primarily in the second act during a conversation between Pastor Manders and Mrs. Alving. All in all, this was an enjoyable read,...more

I enjoyed this play as it slowly revealed a complex plot and set of characters. This is a story of following and rejecting norms, with the ultimate cost being happiness.

"...I'm half inclined to think we're all ghosts, Pastor Manders. It's not just what we inherit from our mother and father that lives on in us. It's all kinds of old, dead ideas, all kinds of old, dead beliefs and suchlike. They're not actually alive in us, they're just stuck there, and we can't get rid of them."

Ok so I didn't have the time to give this a proper review when I first rated it and marked it read.

Would you leave a loved one to his/her own devices because he/she asked you to, or would you stay and intervene for their betterment? That's the basic question that this play makes us ask ourselves.

This is an amazing play in three acts. Everything fits together s well that, even if you saw it coming, you cannot help but be surprised in how it unfolds. We still have a strong yet trapped female lead...more

After the fairly straightforward plot of A Doll's House, Ghosts was surprisingly intricate and convoluted. After reading two of his plays, I praise Ibsen for creating an intriguing web of characters and having the ability to keep his stories tense throughout. Even when his characters are simply conversing, I can feel the tension piling on top of itself. Who knew conversations could be so interesting?

Apparently, Ibsen wrote Ghosts with the hopes of shocking those who were still recovering from hi...more

It's hard to imagine the kind of effect a play like this had on its audiences when it was first performed. The subjects dealt with are still the stuff of sidelong glances and judgmental gossip to this day, and Ibsen's sometimes annoying (to this modern reader, anyway) habit of never allowing his characters to come out and say anything clearly seems to me a testimony to the degree to which he was breaking taboos even by writing "Ghosts." But for all its Victorian stuffiness of expression and cir...more

This was another book that touched me. I was in a not so happy time in my life in highschool. Mr. Ibsen touched me by his rather negative way of viewing marriage and relationships. His rather jaded and cutting view of marriage as an institution was different than any others I had seen at that time. He wasn't he warm fuzzy author so many teachers and adults tried to force down our throats. In fact, his books made a person question and think. The realism is what really got to me. There are no happ...more

Ghosts takes place over one night at a mansion in Norway. The majority of the story is unveiled in a conversation between the protagonist, Mrs. Alving, and a pastor from a nearby town, Manders. The two are building an orphanage to honor the late Captain Alving, a man Manders believed to have been an honorable man, but who in fact was a scoundrel and a drunk. The history of Alving mirrors and highlights the present predicaments of two others in the play: Engstrand, a carpenter for the orphanage,...more

The best Ibsen I've read yet. Of course, it suffers from the usual Ibsen weaknesses--Ibsen's being the Victorian equivalent of a shock-jock, his modern morals and his heavy-handedness about these morals.

However, what redeems this play is the real pathos that is absent from A Doll's House and Ein Fiendefolke, both daft, flimsy pieces of work. In Gangengere, however, Ibsen immerses the audience in the choices of his characters. The audience must wrestle along with Mrs. Alving--to euthanize or not...more

A typical Ibsen - a domestic tragedy mixed with issues of out-of-wedlock children, venereal disease, incest, infidelity, and euthanasia. Today, of course, the social climate is very different from the 19th century Norway in which Ibsen wrote his masterpiece, and it's difficult to view the play in the same light. But this Ghosts is still trying to shock us. Ghosts will stay a landmark of scandal and beauty in the history of European drama.

Ghosts is my favorite Ibsen to date, I think primarily because of the remarkable opinions that Ibsen expresses. Acknowledging that true and honorable commitment to a lover is not predicated on the existence of a marriage certificate in the late 19th century, when we're barely able to admit that as a society in the 21st century? Ibsen was a remarkable man.

This play was apparently banned in UK for some time. Though it's quite controversial on a number of topics, I found it rather mild and generally just honest and intelligent in its approach. That said, it was the usual Scandinavian 'bundle of fun' you might expect from Ibsen, Bergman et al, so I appreciated its brevity as much as the content.

i read this because this play had its premiere in chicago, when the area by grand and chicago blue line stops was scandinavian. i researched the original location of the theater, it's of course now the site of an ugly condo building.
the play is good for its discussion of topics taboo back in the day.

There wasn't anything exceptional about the play's plot, and I ultimately found it quite predictable. I would have given it 2 out of 5. Nevertheless, the very last scene, filled with symbolic meaning evoking a myriad of emotions in the reader, urged me to give a higher rating. Leaving the finale open to interpretation is really the strongest, most emotionally packed aspect of the play.

Another play that messes with your mind and another exquisitely written piece of work.

For me, the dramatic shift in events was too quick to feel natural and this took somewhat from my enjoyment of the play.

This was a play that took Isben's contemperaries by surprise. It comprises the vices of enceast, vanarial disease and other scandalous topics. It is about how to erase the mistakes of one's past.

Although the dialogues as such were not anything that I would call "great"...the essence of those discussions raised so many thoughts. It is certainly prompting me to read more of Ibsen's works.

Yes I know it's a quite famous play of Ibsen but i gave it three starts probably coz I found it a bit terse. Maybe when I read it again I'll be able to appreciate it more!

a three act play about morals, past mistakes, guilt and freedom. I enjoyed Ibsen's other play Hedda Gabler way more than Ghosts, but still the play is quite interesting

Tale of multi-generational depravity. Vintage Ibsen. Joyce's favorite play, he actually wrote a prologue to the play in verse.

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a major Norwegian playwright largely responsible for the rise of modern realistic drama. He is often referred to as the "father of modern drama." Ibsen is held to be the greatest of Norwegian authors and one of the most important playwrights of all time, celebrated as a national symbol by Norwegians.

His plays were considered scandalous to many of his era, when Victorian valu...more
