firefighters, their families
After our trip to San Francisco, I really wanted to read more, especially about the fire boats. Naturally, that was the activity my husband (a firefighter) picked, and I thought it would be really interesting to learn more about why SFFD thought they were necessary-- the story of the fires and earthquakes quickly made it obvious! Plus, it was a really great look at what the turn-of-the-century firefighters were like and how different things are today.

The style of this book irked me tremendously, unreasonably perhaps. I just don't like books that parade to be non-fiction and then launch into sentences like "Rudolph Spreckels looked at his pregnant wife in bed and thought about how much he loved her." In the first place this individual is long dead and cannot possibly tell us now how exactly he felt on the night before the 1906 earthquake so I just feel that it's bad practice as a historian. The next problem I have with this book is ...more

I admit I have a fascination with disasters. Maybe it's because I grew up in the '70's when 'disaster' movies were invented. I think it's really because I'm intriged by how people respond and react to the traumatic events that unfold around them. It gives a lot of insight of how the city responded and the individuals that were involv...more

This piece of history is particularly compelling as the street names, buildings, parks, etc. are mostly familiar, we go by them all the time. Occasionally the facts and figures overwhelm the story; however, I was fascinated with the things the "leaders" did wrong and suggestions that the fire could have been much better controlled than it was. Some of those lessons could be valuable. Toward the end there is a litany of some the corruption, the drinking and jail time that tied up the st...more

An amazing and enlightening expose on the dastardly deeds behind the unnecessary destruction of a great city. Written by a fireman, with a good eye for details that lay bare the idiocy that plagued those in charge during the quake and it's aftermath.
A good read, and a heartbreak.

Fascinating and upsetting account of the great earthquake/fire of 1906. Apparently the first book to give due credit to several previously unsung heroes of the firefighting, including a naval officer who was from Fort Wayne, IN!
