This book continues the Heechee saga with the discovery of a massive spaceship containing tantalizing new technologies and possible information on the Heechee themselves. Not as good as the first book. It introduces a number of new characters, who by and large are not compelling. The first books relationship between Robin and his AI shrink is replaced with a relationship between Robin and his AI scientist (a hologram of Albert Einstein). Much of that relationship is Robin ignoring Albert, wh...more

Not as gripping as the first book (Gateway) in the series. This was somewhat of a holding action in a three book series. Most of the tension was created by uninteresting characters or overly contrived situations, and it was a page turner simply to find out how the story ends. In Gateway, the story is driven by the protagonist's love and his betrayal, and her rescue becomes somewhat of a side plot among many in this story. The Heechee saga continues and we find out more about the enigmatic Heechee and their technology. We are also left with more questions.
Unfortunately, this is also the beginning of a shift in the tone of the series that ends badly. The characters in this installation are largely unlikable, and the narration of the story slips even more into the quirky. And not in a good way. Still, as a follow up to the events after Gateway, it's an interesting read.

If my memory is correct, this book furthers the plot of the first Heechee novel. It also adds to the mystery surrounding the Heechee race and the technology they left behind. I think it involves a source of unlimited food that could solve the hunger problem at earth. I remember a jet-ski scene in the beginning...for some reason.

Ah, yes, this book is terrible in a very good and cheesey way. I had to read it. Gateway was my gateway and I just wanted to know what on earth Pohl would do next.
This story would probably blow the mind of a 15 year old boy, but alas, it just seemed a wee bit overdone. Go Heechees!

This book lacks the claustrophobic tension that made Gateway so great, but deserves a higher rating than its average. More mysteries of the Heechee are revealed along with subtle commentary on modern healthcare.
