It was interesting and upsetting to read about what New Yorker's of Joseph Smith's time thought of him, but I definitely do not believe most of these people who slandered Joseph Smith's name. Lies, lies, and more lies. I gave the book three stars not because I agree with the content but because it is interesting to read the words of liars. Some people are just so pathetic and have nothing better to do with their time than gossip and slander. Some of the reports bear some resemblance to the truth ...more

Why did I read this? Who CARES about Joseph Smith's New York reputation? It was on a "New Mormon Studies CD" I'd blown a hundred bucks on, so I read it so as to get my money's worth. The one interesting thing this book has to offer is the original stories from JS's neighbors which would later inspire Mark Hofmann's "white salamander" forgery.

Because of the way I read and use my LDS library I have elected to not rate these books.
