WOW! I don’t know how I can possibly do this book justice with a review, but I’ll try to at least convey what makes it so astounding. As irrevocably moved as I was by Surrender, I loved Untamed just as much, if not more. It’s utterly enthralling...I simply couldn’t put it down and never wanted it to end.

I found myself actually looking for reference books detailing the time period of the French and Indian War, that's how captivated I was by this second book in Pamela Clare's MacKinnon's Rangers Trilogy. And anyone who read the first book of the trilogy, "Surrender", and didn't possibly think that the author could equal or exceed that story, let me tell you in my opinion, I think she did at LEAST equal that wonderful book.

This story revolves around Morgan, the second of the three exiled Scottish MacKinnon brothers. Morgan now commands the Rangers, a group of highly skilled, largely colonial frontiersmen who fight alongside the British soldiers against the French and their Indian allies. While battling the French at their fort near Ticonderoga in upstate New York, Morgan is shot, captured, and feared dead while trying to save the life of one of his fellow Rangers. He's taken to the fort with the French hoping he will live, so they can torture the British war secrets out of him. Then they will turn him over to their allies, the Abenaki Indians, who want to see him dead for his part in the attack on one of their villages. Of course the Abenaki just don't want to kill him, they want to burn him alive at the stake. Gruesome stuff. Morgan knows what fate awaits him, and does his best NOT to survive. There's no way he'd ever give up secrets to the French, as that would harm his brothers and fellow Rangers. And he'd just as soon not die at the stake, so he wills himself not to live. But he does not count on the determination of a beautiful young French lass who cares for his wounds, and who later comes to care for him.

Beautiful 17 year old Amalie Chauvenet, born to a French officer and an Abenaki Indian mother, never had a real home or family. Convent raised since the death of her mother when she was just a baby, and only recently reunited with her father, she is a true innocent in every sense of the word. Recently reunited with her father, she's come to love and respect him, but she's tired of being told what she must do without anyone asking her opinion. If only someone would actually listen to her--she would love to be able to talk with someone rather than being talked TO. When she first sees Morgan MacKinnon, almost a year has passed since her father's tragic death in a previous battle with the British. She's now a ward of her father's friend and current third in command, Chevalier de Bourlamaque. Bourlamaque wants to set her up with a French officer for a husband, but Amalie has no feelings for the man he's chosen. If she doesn't soon choose a husband, Bourlamaque has plans to send her back to the abbey, where she can devote her life to Christ. She's almost resigned to a life back at the abbey, until she spends time tending to Major Morgan MacKinnon. Mon dieu! What a fine speciman of a man--and he's kind, mannerly, honorable, and he actually is interested in her thoughts! And even though he may be directly responsible for the death of her father, she cannot hate him. And he certainly doesn't deserve to die at the stake at the hands of the Abenaki. If only there was something she could do...

Well, at the eleventh hour, Amalie convinces Bourlamaque to let Morgan live, but what Morgan has to do is almost not worth his life to him. He's caught between a rock and a hard place, but he does what he must in order to survive. And maybe one day, if he plays his cards right, he can escape...and make his way back to his brothers and fellow Rangers. But can he leave Amalie, who he's grown to cherish more than any other woman in his life? Can there ever be a future for the two of them?

This story had me on edge from the time Morgan was captured by the French, up to the time he was about to make his escape. Would he take Amalie with him? Would he be deemed a traitor by the British? Would he ever see his brothers again? Would he be a wanted man for the rest of his life? All these questions and more were answered, and it made for one emotional read. Although this story had quite a historical background, including real and fictional characters and places, it was mainly a love story in all respects; Morgan's love for his brothers and family, love for his Rangers, there was even some love (okay, more like extreme respect) for the French commander Bourlamaque, but mostly his love for a young woman who grew up before our eyes, the beautiful and brave Amalie.

The love between Morgan and Amalie was filled with sexual tension, and almost-there moments, that leave the reader breathless with anticipation. And when they finally consummate their love near a waterfall in the forrest...whew...molten hot passion ensues!

Once again, there's lots of little Scottish words and phrases used--my favorites being "a leannan" (Morgan's term of endearment for Amalie), his declaration of love--"My love lies upon you", and my favorite curse word, "Och! Satan's arse!"

On a side note, I would love to see the young British General, William Wentworth, get a woman of his own. I'm getting tired of him coveting the MacKinnons' women! He is a tricky devil, and though he's proven that he's not all bad (he is a complicated man), this guy needs a woman that will put him in his place. I hope Pamela Clare has plans to write a story about him. Hopefully he will not try to poach whoever will become Connor's (the third brother) woman in the next book!

If you love your historicals action packed, but not short-changed on the love story, "Untamed" is the perfect book for you. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be deeply satisfied at the conclusion but you'll be ready to read more about these brave Scotsmen. A highly recommended 5 stars!(less)

Yes, Untamed is equally as good as the first book and in some ways I suppose even better because I’m now more familiar with the Scottish brogue and also have a better understanding of the French/British war being fought in the Colonies of 1759. This book was also interesting on a personal level because I have family in French Canada so I enjoyed reading the heroine Amalie's Français and some of the history as to why my country is bilingual. As others have mentioned this also sent me on a historical search (which a romance novel has never done before) to learn more about the battle of Trois Rivières and the time period in general.

There isn’t a whole lot I can add about this amazing series as I’m a little late to the party and there are already so many great reviews out there. All the praise is worthy though; Pamela Clare is simply an amazing writer, giving us characters that you won’t be able to let go of. The romance here is just perfect; sweet, passionate (hello waterfall sex), tear jerking and sighworthy. What a fantastic couple. In fact I loved everything about this; the suspense, the humour, the language, the history, the secondary characters (Joseph, Connor, Iain & Annie, the Rangers and even William) I was also never certain where this story was going to go, jeez the choices Morgan was forced to make, eventually becoming the enemy of both the French and the English.

Untamed starts shorty after Surrender and sees Scottish warrior Morgan MacKinnon still reluctantly fighting for the English. Upon his brother’s release Morgan is now in command of the Rangers and in the opening chapter we join him in the midst of a horrific battle, which see’s our boy gravely wounded and taken hostage by the French. His loyal Rangers assume he’s dead (or soon will be) and are so moved by his final heroics that they write a ballad in his honor (Loved it)

Incapacitated, Morgan is shackled to a bed where the French plan to interrogate him before turning him over to the Abenaki -who will then burn him alive for crimes against their people. It’s not looking very good for ole Morgan. Bearing two festering musket holes he wills himself to die rather then turn traitor on his men or burn at the stake, but it’s not going to be that easy. Enter his nursemaid, sweet, innocent, young and beautiful Amalie. Raised in a convent and now upon the death of her father (at the hands of British) the ward of Chevalier de Bourlamaque who will either see her returning to the nunnery and marrying god or one of his chosen French officers. Amalie however has other plans and has decided that this man must live.

“Morgan fought the urge to touch her, crossed his arms over his chest.
“You have no’ answered my question, lass. Why are you here? And dinnae tell me it’s the summer heat that brings you, for ‘tis hot in my bed too.”
She looked away again, distress on her face. ”I…I needed…”
“Needed what?” He knew the answer, but he wanted to hear it from her.
When she spoke, her words were but a whisper “I needed to be…near you.”

This is the 2nd installment of the MacKinnon's Rangers trilogy and was every bit as good as the 1st, if not better!

In this story, loyalties are tested and we learn that not everything is as it seems.

The characters are people I care about and the storyline is, once again, unique to the Highlander genre.

Untamed is a fast paced, funny and sexy read!

2008--- Read it yesterday and absolutely loved it. It's the sequel to Clare's book `Surrender' and tells Morgan's story, the middle of three MacKinnon brothers. In short, it is an incredibly compelling, heart moving story that at times makes you feel as if a happy ending is simply impossible.

3)His unimpeachable sense of honor, even when it put his life in jeopardy.
4)The gentle, loving way he treated Amalie.
5)The fact that he wasn't going to let anything stand between Amalie and him.

Aah!!! Okay, I admit that Iain is st...more I'd like to begin this review by listing some reasons that Morgan is a Hero to Die For:

Aah!!! Okay, I admit that Iain is still my favorite, but Morgan is a close second. I don't understand how Pamela Clare managed to tap into the well-spring of what makes a completely unforgettable hero, and so well, yet again. But she did.

Untamed is the second book in this series, and it thoroughly immersed me into this period of American history that I was frankly never that excited about. With these books, I feel completely drawn in. I loved how she presented this war between Britain and France, with the Native tribes on both side as more than just a martial conflict, but shows us the personal sides of this war. In Untamed, we get to see the French viewpoint. I remember being a little more favorably inclined towards the French when I learned about this period, because they were able to live in peace with the Native tribes more than the British; more tolerant of their differences, and often intermarrying. Yet, Surrender forced me to be on the side of the British, because I cared about MacKinnon's Rangers and people like Anne, who becomes Iain's wife. Ms. Clare deftly manages to turn things around as she shows what life is like for Amalie, whose father is a French military officer. We see how painful it is for Amalie to see the French soldiers wounded and dying. We come to like some of them, and I was hoping that I wouldn't see them come in conflict against Morgan and his men. I liked how this story played out. We know in our minds that they will face each other again, at least in theory, but we don't have to see this up close and personal. And Morgan and Amalie get their happy ending, despite all the significant obstacles in their way.

The love story between Morgan and Amalie was both sweet and steamy. From its inception, there is a powerful bond that grows between this innocent young woman who is grieving her lost father, and the doomed prisoner she is called to nurse back to health so he can be handed over to the Abenaki, a tribe who is allied to the French, to be burned in their horrible fires (the manner in which they torture and kill their enemies). As a devout Catholic, Amalie hates the thought of this man suffering. She knows that he could have been the one who killed her father in battle, yet she cannot bring herself to hate him. If anything, it's hard not to desire and fall in love with this vital, beautiful man who she has nursed so diligently. Morgan knew he was in dire straits when he was captured by the French. He can only hope for a quick death, and dreads being burned by the Abenaki. He also fears that he will unwittingly give the secrets of his band of soldiers away as they torture him. He's determined to die with honor, protecting his brothers and men. He didn't expect to see a sweet angel watching over him. And certainly didn't plan to fall in love with her, but he did. It makes things so much worse in a sense, for she calls to him to abandon all he stands for to be with her. And that's easier than it seems, or it would be, if Morgan wasn't honor-bound to his commitment to fight for the British by the blackmail that his commander Wentworth holds over his head. In this book, we see a strong, honorable man who is struggling to do the right thing. And I never lost faith that Morgan would hold true to his principles. Even when things get really hard for him.

Untamed is different from Surrender in that there are more quiet moments between Morgan and Amalie, where their courtship progresses and grows. It is somewhat suspenseful, rather than featuring lots of overt action sequences, as Morgan is forced to maintain his facade as a Scot who takes his rightful place with his Catholic brethren, the French, even though his heart still holds true to his loyalty to his men and his brothers. I feared the aftermath as he surely would be declared a traitor by the British. There are some real knuckle-biting moments as this book unfolds.

It was great to see Iain and Annie, happily married, though mourning their lost brother, Morgan; Connor, Joseph, the other Rangers, and yes, Wentworth. That sly devil has wormed his way deeper into my heart. I can't wait for him to meet a woman who shows him the error of his ways. Each book shows deeper layers to him that make me very desirous for him to get his own story.

This book was wonderfully executed, and I enjoyed it very much. I long for romantic adventures that show me snapshots of the past, through the eyes of people who might have lived and loved during those times. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical romance with intrigue and adventure, and sweet, yet sensual love stories between characters who you cannot help but love and root for their happy ending together.

I really liked this story. Morgan and Amalie are great leads, even though I sometimes worried she was going to become TSTL or mewling. She didn't. She reasoned things out and came to correct conclusions almost every time. And had incredible faith in Morgan.

I say this as an explanation for why I was a bit worried about reviewing “Untamed”, but with Pamela Clare as the author, I really should have known better than to be concerned. She managed to make even my least favorite genre exciting and interesting.

Amalie is a mixed blood child of a French father and half-blood Abenaki Indian mother. When she was just two her mother’s died and her father sent her to a convent where she’s spent the last 16 years. After only a few months with her father at the fort where he served in the French army, he was killed in battle. Now she’s alone and under pressure to marry but none of the men have caught her eye…until an injured enemy is brought under her care.

Morgan MacKinnon is a warrior forced to fight for the British or hang…along with all his brothers. So they formed the MacKinnon Rangers and tales of their ferocity in battle have made them feared by their enemies. So when Morgan is injured and captured, he prefers to die rather than chance giving away any secrets that could cause harm to his brothers. Yet, it’s his nurse with her innocent, yet hungry eyes that somehow has him refusing to give in or give up. Now he’s caught between the woman he loves and the brothers he won’t abandon.

What a man! What an enduring love. Pamela Clare can pen some of the hottest, non-erotica love scenes I’ve read. And her characters seem to leap off the page and jump straight into my imagination where I have no problems seeing and recognizing them. Two characters stuck between two impossible choices yet willing to risk it all for love…now that’s a romance.

It would be easy to categorize this as a simple historical, but it’s more than that. The author probes into the prejudices and preferences of the times, nationalities, and players involved to provide a peek into stormy time in American history. I also found it fascinating that although it’s ‘American’ history, the main players are French and Scottish! The action is rough and tumble, just like life in those times, and the social mores are reflected in the attitudes of all the players. The story progresses smoothly and draws the reader in until you realize it’s almost over.

I’m glad I read “Untamed” by Pamela Clare. This story just cements Clare as an author who apparently can write just about anything and I’ll find it readable! This is the second book of a trilogy and I’ll likely end up reading the other two books just to see what happens to the rest of the MacKinnon’s. So if you like this genre…don’t miss this one. And if you’re not a big fan of American historicals, this one may just prove the exception.(less)

I'm not sure why but I just didn't like this one as much as I did book 1.

Possible reasons:

1) Probably because I started it right after I finished book 1 and for this very same reason everything just seemed more of the same... I should have left some time in between or read a book from another genre before starting this one.

2)I completely adored the hero and his family but this heroine was not of my favorites... She was just too nice and goody-goody while he was the warrior type, the one who got...more

A heartwarming wonderful HR book, 4.5 huge stars.

This series belongs to the very best. Every time I opened this second book in the series, I realized I love everything in it. I honestly didn't think I would like Untamed, the second book in Pamela Clare's MacKinnon's Rangers trilogy, as much as I liked the first book Surrender. Boy, was I wrong!

Once again, Pamela Clare took me on an exciting journey replete with adventure, suspense, and intrigue, coupled with a beautiful and passionate romance. I didn't enjoy this one as much as "Surrender" (book #1 in this series). The characters weren't as compelling and it dragged in places. Having said that, the author did a nice job changing the plot around for Morgan (brother #2). Having him captured by the French and held prisoner, how he met Amalie, courted her, etc was vastly different from the first book. Kudos!

Morgan MacKinnon takes over as captain of MacKinnon’s Rangers after his older brother Iain is allowed to leave the service and return to the family farm with his wife Annie and their son. Morgan gets captured by the French at Fort Ticonderoga after he is gravely injured while helping save the life of one of his men. The French intend to try to save his life so he can be interrogated then given to the Abenaki. The Abenaki want to torture and kill Morgan in retaliation for a harsh attack against an Abenaki village known for killing British citizens.

Amalie Chauvenet came to Fort Ticonderoga (Fort Carillon to the French) to be near her father who is a French officer. She is part Abenaki on her mother’s side but does not know much about her Abenaki heritage because her mother died while she was young and her father sent her to be raised in a convent. Amalie’s father is killed in the Battle of Ticonderoga by a Ranger sniper but she remains at the fort afterward because it was too dangerous to go back to the convent.

Amalie is asked to help care for Morgan in the infirmary because they are afraid the French soldiers would try to harm him. Amalie resents Morgan at first because her father was killed by a Ranger like him but she quickly comes to admire his honesty and integrity. Amalie and Morgan come to know and respect each other while he heals. They both fight the fierce attraction between them because they know Morgan is bound for death from the French or Abenaki as soon as he is healed.

Desperate to save Morgan’s life, Amalie convinces the fort commander to give Morgan the choice to fight for the French instead of being killed since he is a fellow Catholic who was forced to serve in the British army against his will. Morgan does not want to betray his fellow Rangers and brother Connor, but decides to pretend to join the French army to find out as much information as possible before he escapes. Morgan is forced to play a desperate game with his life on the line if he is found out, while fighting his strong attraction to Amalie as he does not want to hurt her when he leaves.

Morgan and Amalie’s love story is full of action and adventure and is quite a fun ride. Their romance was very sweet and passionate. Morgan manages to survive some harrowing situations with the help and love of Amalie, who shows a lot of courage and compassion in her actions. I loved catching up with Iain and Annie and am looking forward to Connor’s story. I highly recommend reading Surrender before this book because it sets up the story line and introduces the wonderful MacKinnon brothers.

Had I not read Surrender first, this would've been a total 5 star read. Unlike Surrender, in which I was completely captivated by the story from the beginning to the very end, in this books while many scenes were simply un-put-downable, there were other scenes when I found myself drifting off.

Another wonderful story that I couldn't put it down

After reading two books from MacKinnon's Ranger series, I'm asking myself.."Why did it take me so long to read her books?" I never thought I would love her books. Frankly speaking, her previous cover art make me turn off to read it. Again, I'm wrong. She is a wonderful storyteller.

I loved everything about this book! The author makes you feel as if you were there.

Strongly recommended.

After reading the first book in the MacKinnon Rangers series, I was unsure if Untamed would be just as good in comparison- And to my delight, I ended up loving it just as much! These MacKinnon brothers are beyond swoon-worthy, which is no surprise coming from such a gifted author. In Untamed, Pamela Clare continues the story of the Mackinnon family. The romance between Morgan and Amalie is full of action and adventure and takes the reader on a very emotional ride. Both of them manage to survive impossible situations and circumstances, with the help and love of one another.

Amalie was such a strong heroine and one who I admired greatly. She consistently showed courage and compassion in her actions, making her a perfect fit for Morgan. After the death of her father at the hands of the Rangers, she is left under the care of the head of the French military where she felt that her Catholic duty wouldn't allow her to deny the responsibility of helping to save Morgan's life. Despite her hatred towards these men, Amalie soon comes to her own conclusion that Morgan isn't quite the barbarian that she's heard so much about and she starts to develop feelings for him in her process of nursing him back to health. She was such a courageous woman and I found her complete trust and faith in Morgan, as well as her unwavering devotion to him not only touching, but also inspiring.

Morgan is all kinds of wonderful. Not only was he taken by Amalie’s beauty and innocence, but her kindness as well. He felt completely touched by her healing hand and forgiveness- Something that he hasn't seen enough of in his life. Like all of the MacKinnon brothers, Pamela Clare doesn't give Morgan any easy way outs in this novel, but he wouldn't take them even if she did. He was such a brave soul who journeyed along a path filled with honor, duty, loyalty, and sacrifice... And lets not forget the most important factor... Love.

The relationship between both Morgan and Amelie is beautifully written in a way that makes you appreciate each and every insurmountable obstacle in the path to their happily-ever-after. Untamed was not only well written, but filled with such emotional detail and depth in not only descriptions, but character development as well. It's impossible to read a book by Pamela Clare without feeling like you're actually a part of every moment. She's not only created another phenomenal installment to this Historical series, but she's also proven that she's more than capable of writing such moving and emotional romances intertwined with historical detail.

PS: If you've yet to read Surrender, then I would highly recommend reading it first before starting Untamed. It really helps to give more detail and knowledge of the background that initially set this series into motion, as well as introduces you to other characters that you can't help but fall in love with.(less)

What I love so much about the MacKinnon's Rangers books is that the characters are so realistic. I can "feel" the love they have for each other - brother to brother, Ranger to Ranger and especially between Morgan & Amalie.

Some authors write their characters in black and white - there's no gray to them. The good guys are ALL good and bad guys are ALL bad; no in-between. Ms Clare's characters have layers, though - with the exception of a few truly evil characters, the others were neither all g...more

Another awesome read by Pamela Clare! I love this series and I can't wait for Connor's story. These are such heart-warming stories and so well written. I am definitely a fan of Pamela Clare. There were some beautiful lines in this book that brought tears to my eyes.

Untamed is her second in her historical in the MacKinnon Rangers series, but can easily be read alone. It is an absorbing book that reminded me of the movie The Last Mohicans. Sections in the book are: brutally realistic, wildly romantic and dramatically poetic.

Pamela Clare has the ability to transport the reader back in time without detracting from the storyline. This book is set before the British colonies were established and the French and British were fighting over land rights in Northern America. It has a realism that is seldom seen in most historical romances combined with genuine characters that will be remembered long after the last page is finished.

Amalie is part French and part Native American. She has been cloistered in a convent most of her life, but has left its security to spend precious time with her father, a French officer. She is beautiful, gentle and compassionate; a refreshing variation from the typical heroine. Although she is naïve, it does not equate her with being stupid. Amalie has a will of her own and is quietly courageous. She quickly falls under the spell of Morgan MacKinnon while tending to his wounds while he is held captive at the French fort.

Morgan MacKinnon is leader of the famous Rangers who have fought against the French. He is noble and handsome. A Highlander forced to work for the British, he finds the British detestable and knows he cannot betray his own kin. Torn between his growing love for Amalie and his loyalty to the MacKinnon Rangers his emotional struggles kept me in suspense. (Readers that love Highlander men will NOT be disappointed by this hero!)

The only difficulty was I felt Amalie forgave Morgan too quickly. He is responsible for French casualties including those she cares about. Amalie is very attracted to Morgan but it blinds her to his present and past actions. I was puzzled by how quickly she overlooked the death and divided loyalty in their past. I felt there could have been more tension stemming from this unresolved conflict.

Pamela Clare has written a sweeping romance and readers who love brawny highlanders and heartbreaking characters will definitely savor the beauty of this book!

Good Stuff!!!!

I loved this one too, I didn't have the same connection with the heroine as in Surrender. I loved the story, and I loved Morgan. And ther is a "man trying to get free" in Wentworth!!! I'd like to see him with a story too.

I couldn't get the image of Mel Gibson in Braveheart out of my head while reading this one!!!

Och! Satan's arse! This made me laugh every time!

I really liked this sequel to Surrender, however, I think it was a bit dragged out and could have been 50 pages shorter. Morgan was an endearing hero. I can't wait for Conner's story. Highly recommended!

I think i may have liked this one just a tiny bit more than the first book. I really liked Iain and Annie's love story from book one but there's just something about Morgan!!
