After the non-ending of the last volume, I had to get the fifth of the series. In this convoluted tale, Burton, Frigate and the others enjoy their newfound powers in the Ethicals' tower, and begin resurrecting people... and then some folks start becoming power-mad. Despite some annoying internal inconsistencies and the usual complaints about awkward dialogue (though the latter is much improved from the first and second books), this was a page-turner. And I did not, believe it or not, guess th

No ending could possibly be satisfactory with 36 billion stories to tell from the Riverworld, but still, decently done and true to the author's form. Ironically, the very day I finished this book, Farmer's theory that souls could be re-attached to bodies was theorized on Morgan Freeman's Through the Wormhole episode that aired for the first time that evening. Serendipity! If only Farmer himself was only alive to see it. I emailed the professor with the theory and told him of the Farmer serie

The fifth book in the Riverworld series. This one is not as good as the earlier volumes in this series. Farmer has seemed to loose interest or direction in the series with this work. Don't bother to read this without first reading the other volumes. Then don't expect to much when you get around to this one. This book is representative of one of the biggest 'let downs' an author has foisted on his reading audience.

This was good, but not quite up to the level of the previous four books. Portions felt unnecessary and the story occasionaly wandered. In it, the surviving adventurers of the first four books begin to explore powers that verge on the godlike ... but have a mystery on their hands when their friend and guide is murdered.

Read this ages ago and realize that I want to go back and read the first four books in the series. One characteristic of a good, original story is that you mentally come back to it again and again and I have thought of this work many times over the years.

This is the last book in the series of Riverworld. I always remember the events that took place in the book and what led up to it. Teaches you to expect the unexpected, especially in life.

Considering how great the first two Riverworld novels were, this last book is a total disaster. I couldn't believe he ended it this way.

Denver
Reread 2009; previously read 1989-92.
Ends the series on a flat note, with a ridiculous and overlong set piece.

Not bad but definitely one of those, "I've already written four books. I'm getting bored. Best to wrap this up."

A fairly satisfying conclusion to the Riverworld Saga, but definitely leaves it open for more adventures.

This is, at once, a satisfying and frustrating book. It answers most all of the questions that remained open after the fourth installment of the Riverworld series, but had an unsatisfying ending. I still admire the overall premise of the series: the rebirth of humanity on another planet where death is not final. I enjoy Farmer's use of actual historical figures - even obscure ones - to populate his stories. I really enjoy the philosophy, sociology, and psychology Farmer deploys in the storie

While I'm always happy to see more Riverworld stories, this one is the weakest of the five. Nearly all the loose threads were wrapped up in 'Magic Labyrinth' so this one just kind of meanders as the heroes try to figure out what to do next with their lives.
Might have worked best if done as a collection of short stories, each one spotlighting a different character.
The ending was cool, but never got followed up on.
Still, weak Philip Jose Farmer is still better than strong a More...

Fascinating philosophy about resurrection and doing good. It just disagrees so much with mine! I wanted to see Samuel Clemens again, and some of the other characters that earlier books described.

I only rate the book at four stars because the story over the course of the series was very good although it dropped off in the later books. This is the last book of the series and spent most of the book dealing with a story line that had little to do with the Riverworld concept and seemed to be a way to "fill" what was really only 100 pages or less of what was left of the Riverworld saga.

A very engaging ending to the Riverworld series. A very different feel from the books in the middle of the series - this took the concept of Riverworld and the Tower to an ultimate conclusion, with a surprising but pretty satisfying ending.

Finally finished this series. The premise is a bit depressing, but interesting. Next book I read will involve people actually doing things, not endless conjecture...

The Riverworld series peters out in this one. Like so many multi-volume science fiction series, Riverworld is best left after the first volume or two.

A satisfactory conclusion to the Riverworld series, this novel contains more suspense, action and overall interesting plot development and actual science fiction than all of the other books combined. In fact, science fiction fans with short attention spans should simply catch up on the series with Wikipedia and then skip straight to this novel.
