I was perusing the Amazon bestseller list when I first stumbled on Susan Hill’s mystery The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story. Why the book, originally published in 1983, was on the list at all is likely the greatest mystery of all.
Lawyer Arthur Kipps is sorting through a deceased client’s paperwork at Eel House when he first encounters the titular woman in black. The house and the woman are shrouded in mystery, and the local villagers refuse to reveal their history to Kipps. Instea...more

i have read this book twice.
i was given this book to read over the summer to get a head start on to my drama work for the following year, at first i didn't think much of this as i read the first few pages but I did actually really into it.
It did scare me quiet a bit :|
ahaha i think the author Susan hill pulled this off very well as she manages to keep it chilling without the whole pakage of gore;blood and guts.

Its a classic Victorian ghost story, it should be read around Christmas because it was tradition for ghost stories to be read and acted out for holiday entertainment. Its a play performed by just two actors, and when its done well, its absolutely terrifying.
The Woman in Black is a classic example of a gothic horror story. In the beginning, these stories were the perfect blend of suspense, psychological thriller, slasher and good-old-fashioned "jump out of your seat" scariness.&quo...more

This book is very descriptive and i had clear images of where i was in the book and what was happening. Although not very much happends throughout the book, when something does, your not expecting it, and you find yourself supprisingly chilled. The ending saves the book from being simply labelled slow-moving and mainly uneventful. The ending, although sad, makes the book worth reading, as it lifts the quality of the book.

Do not read this ghost story home alone-- not even in the daytime! It has all the cliches-- graveyard, ghost, haunted house, even literally, bumps in the night. But in spite of these, or maybe because of them, she creates a chilling story. Here is the main character's first sighting of the ghost: "...the skin and, it seemed, only the thinnest layer of flesh was tautly stretched and strained across her bones, so that it gleamed with a curious, blue-white sheen, and her eyes seemed sunken...more

Who says they can't make them like they used to? This is a terrific tale, among the best in the genre. I'd compare it to some of Edith Wharton's ghost stories, with a dollop of Daphne du Maurier on the side.
Unfortunately, I can't say a lot about the story without giving it away, but I will say it's an engrossing read. At about 150 pages, it's the perfect book for a cold winter's night. Build a fire, turn down the lights, curl up on the couch, and prepare to enter a dark world.

This is a quick read (less than 200 pages). It is a ghost story that reminded me of the style of Daphne du Maurier. The end is not shocking by any means, but if you enjoy stories writtenin a victorian style, check it out.

A scary yarn, but that's as far as it goes. Must be really tricky to write an effective ghost story. Maybe people are more cynical now than in the Victorian golden age of the ghost story - Dickens, James etc.

Read while on a bus to work surrounded by fog and rain - very atmospheric.
A realy good old-fashioned ghost story read in the perfect weather.
Read it at night, by candlelight for the most goose-bumps.

I have to read this as part of my drama coursework. I have read most of it but am still a little confused. But i know the book has many supernatural factors to it.

Lovers of traditional ghost stories
Creepy and atmospheric, a traditional ghost story without all the blood-letting of more modern horror. Easily read in one sitting.

I pooh-poohed my way through most of Gothic Literature, but this book caught me. A lovely, spooky gem. Thanks, Dr. Khwaja!

This was one of the scariest plays that I have ever seen. I am officially scared of rocking chairs because of it.

A great read. Very ghostly and sent shivers up my spine. I would love to see the film or the stage play now.

A quick read, but not that great. The last two pages were a real bummer.
