I spent the majority of last year researching Canada, its people, history, and culture. Along the way I managed to fit in a few for-fun books by Canadian authors and I surfaced from the whole thing mystified as to why we never seem to get wind of new Canadian books. That's why I was so pleased to find Heartless Girl. None of our local bookstores had it, but the library did (bless them) so I picked it up on my way home from work and read it later that night as my husband snored gently besi...more

There are lots of ways to mess up your life. Make "bad choices," adults call it. In True Confessions of a Heartless Girl, by Martha Brooks, virtually everyone in Pembina Lake has screwed up at one point or another. Seventeen year-old Noreen is no exception. Luckily, she ends up in a place where there are a lot of people who have been there, done that, and who are willing to give her chance after chance to grow herself up, and start taking responsibility.
Lynda takes her in, ag...more

Noreen, seventeen-years-old, shows up one night during a raging storm in the small town of Pembina Lake. Against her better judgment, cafe owner Lynda lets her in and for some reason lets her spend the night. There's something going on with this girl, but Lynda doesn't have the energy to try and find out what it is. Soon enough a small cast of characters from the town come in the picture and try to figure out what to do with this teenager who makes a disaster out of everything.

Eh. That's all...more

Do you like coffee? Do you like the smell, the taste, the feel of the warm cup in your hands? Does the word coffee conjure up images of comfort and confessions? Well, then this is the book for you. Coffee makes an appearance no less than 11 times in this very short book in order to convey just those emotions (much like Harlequin romances use the same cliches repeatedly). So make up cup, strap on your extra ovaries and get ready for a sludge of estrogen!

I know, a bit of a random read on my part, but the HBLL was doing a huge bit of book inventory so I had to peruse the Juvenile lit section of the library. I actually ended up really liking this book. It was a nice easy read and a good break from Shakespeare and such. I'd recommend it to any angsty teenager who hates their life--it might make them rethink a few things...or to any heartless girl. I, at least, could relate. Hehehe.

True Confessions of a Heartless Girl was an amazingly poignant, well-written, and spare novel young adult novel. The arrival of a teenage stranger to a small town sets off a chain reaction of events that forces the towns introverted residents to reveal their deepest secrets and pains. The stranger, more troublemaker than saint, is also forced to let down her guard. She claims not to love anyone, but this turns out to be a misguided lie.

This book is an intriguing tale about a seventeen year-old girl who feels like everything she does seems to mess everything up. She runs away from home to live with her boyfriend and things seem good for awhile until she again feels like she has made a mess of things. I would recommend this book to teenage girls who enjoy drama, and the development of a young girls life as she deals with family, boyfriends, new friends, and pregnancy.

I've really enjoyed Martha Brooks in the past, and when I say that, I mean that I read 'Two Moons in August' about 80 times when I was 16... but this one seemed darker and kind of surprisingly predictable. (Is that an oxymoron? Do you know what I mean? I didn't predict that it would be predictable, but...anyways.)

It gets three stars for interesting characters though. And because it takes place in Canada.

I loved, loved, loved this book. A amazingly heart-full multi generational tale that covers the terrain of a flawed teen, mistakes that accelerate, vulnerability, and a community that rallies to try to help heal and accept an accumulation of bad choices.
