Jack Reacher travels the country with the clothes on his back and a folding toothbrush in his pocket. Hitchhiking through Texas, he’s picked up by Carmen Greer, a beautiful Hispanic woman. Although Carmen’s husband Sloop Greer is from a rich family, she only has $1.00 in her purse. Her husband’s in prison and Carmen hopes he stays there but Sloop’s worked out a deal with the federal authorities and is expected home. Carmen’s been cruising the streets, looking for someone she can talk ...more

Great this one was as much fun to read as Die Trying and it had a better story and tighter plot. This one has been the hardest to put down of the series so far. It starts off a tad confusing, but you don't have to stick with it long to become hooked. Most of the twists Lee Child put there I didn't see coming and that is always fun. This one is another that at times seems more like a cookie cutter crime fiction book, it isn't though. Awesome action sequences, a great plot, and the best characters...more

After female gender politics of the 70s, I need (being as I am on holiday) a book about a big bloke kicking arse.

I am reading these in order every time i am away and I didnt really like the last one at all. I know they are silly kickabout books but the last one lacked credibility and didnt have a message.

This is a return to form. Reacher is on his own - helping a mexican lady whos husband is knocking her about and about to get out of jail.

This gives the auth...more

If you're looking for a synopsis, go to Borders or Amazon or the other reviews for this title. I'm just here to tell you what I think.

Read this as a recommendation; I wanted to see if this Jack Reacher guy is all he's made up to be. And, mostly, he is. He's a tough-as-nails early-middle-aged man who is prepared to take care of business he gets suckered into wherever his wanderlust leads him. A man's man, not overly emotional but with a level-headed sensibility.

This is a simply outstanding book. Child is a very patient writer, and takes his time with the details; nothing is left out. Even the little things that much of the time would seem insignificant are included. Things like the way water feels as it runs down your back when you are in the shower. These descriptions bring reality to all of the scenes that Child creates. This book in particular is built with details. The cleverly convoluted story leads the reader to numerous conclusions along t...more

Jack Reacher is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. While that is a bit unbelieveable - the rest of this novel is slamming!!! Reacher hitches a ride in Texas with a lady who claims her husband is beating her.. She eventually asks Reacher to kill her husband who is coming home from prison to start up in a couple of days. Reacher offers her a different type of help, but soon is embroiled in a murder mystery full of those wonderful Lee Child twists and turns leading up to an action-pack...more

Started out slow, but the last couple of chapters made up for the long build up. Stayed up way to late to finish it. Couldn't go to bed without knowing how it ended. Reacher is a man of honor and is very sure of himself. I just wish Child would allow him to carry a small duffle bag. This carrying only a toothbrush is a little too minimalist for me. Come on, a change of underwear and some deodorant is not going to tie the guy down, and if he had to leave it behind it would be no great loss....more

While interesting in parts, this book felt flat to me. The question of whether Carmen was telling the truth or not intrigued me, but in the end I found her and all the other characters unlikable, and not in an interesting way. I enjoyed seeing Jack be a noble humanitarian (the scene where he retrieves $20,000 is especially satisfying) but I found it unconvincing that he kept sticking around with Carmen, despite her shaky stories. The shoot-out at the end was exciting, but Jack's long monologous ...more

Child/Reacher combo doesn't disappoint. The subject matter was a tougher read for me, but not because it's written badly - more likely, because it was written well. Probably the most impressive for this author so far, for me - I know the intertwining story lines are effective when I catch myself holding my breath and finding myself with tight jaws and generally stressed out while reading on the plane. Domestic violence and children in vulnerability prove to be sensitive subjects for me, so I'm i...more

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz oops I must of fell asleep with my hand on the keys. This book was so boring that I can't keep my eyes open. Lee Child is one of my favorite authors and I enjoy all of the Reacher novels but this one sucked. I couldn't wait for this one to end so I could move on with my life. The beginning and the half way through it had a good story line and I was really looking forward to something good happening, back nothing ever came. The end was very predictable and boring. This was good, but I didn’t like it as much as I liked Running Blind, which is not to say that I didn’t like it, because I did. I read this one in kind of a trance, turning pages, along for the ride, not having to think too hard. Which is not to say that it was sophomoric, either. I’ve only read the two, but I’ve decided that these Jack Reacher novels are like literary “A-Team” episodes. (And how awesome is that??) Here's the formula: Jack Reacher blows into town, sees injustic...more

Rather than review each of Lee Child's books, all of which I've read over the past few months, I chose one at random, and let my comments here suffice to cover them all. He's my favorite crime-thriller-investigative novelist. While I'm reading his books, it's as if I'm in a self-contained world. I drift through the pages in an enjoyable trance, you might say. His hero, Jack Reacher, is an ex-military cop who falls into cases and lends his expertise towards getting rid of any number of bad guys....more

Not good. I liked small portions of this book, but nothing more. I didn't like the Reacher character much ... the superman who can break multiple men into pieces when he isn't throughly dominating them mentally. I don't like lesbians inviting men over for platonic dinner with no bra in a tight white Tshirt. Huh? Some romance in this story could have helped.

So, I'm not a Lee Child fan, but my friend is and so I read one more Lee Child book, "The Hard Way." I did like t...more

This time, Jack’s hitchhiking comes with a hitch. Carmen, the sexy woman who picks him up on a hot road in the scorched Texas desert near the small town of Echo, has an agenda that includes Jack killing her husband. Things heat up from there.

Jack’s on his own in this one, far from “civilization,” old friends, guns, and police back-up. This novel is slightly less violent than some of the others. More thinking and less head bashing. Another good Reacher read.

Trying to finish up the Jack Reacher series. Have enjoyed all so far. I didn't read them in order and I haven't found it to be a problem for me. I thoroughly enjoy the character. The world would be a better place with more people like him. Yeah, he takes the law into his own hands sometimes, I wish we all could-in the interest of justice.
Another good story. I think I only have one more Lee Child book and I'm going to save it, like the last piece of chocolate.

This book actually gets a 4.5 star review. Lee Child's Jack Reacher books are among my most favorite. This one does not disappoint. Jack Reacher is an ex-military traveling man, who finds himself involved in crazy situations at every stop. This one takes place in rural Texas. Like every woman on earth, I am in love with Jack Reacher! Read these books, and if you ever get a chance, go see Lee Child in person.

I would have given this one a four-and-a half, if only because I figured out whodunit earlier than usual. Still, this is a terrific book, full of twisty plot and characters with conflicting stories. Who do you believe? Who can be trusted?

On top of that, the book has Lee Child's signature rock-solid research. The story is so well grounded in reality that it feels dense (in a good way). Highty recommended.

Jack Reacher is an admirable character in his way, but I found the plot of this book to be a bit slow. Punctuated with moments of action, it spent too much time wallowing in the personal nonsense of its characters. This, of course, is a stylistic preference. Mr. Child's writing is true to his British roots. If you like other British crime authors, you may love this book. For me, it didn't do it.

Another good Jack Reacher novel, a bit different than the previous ones. Jack usually "gets the girl" but in this one the two females are unavailable. The focal female is in jail most of the time and the secondary female is gay.

Jack and the woman lawyer spend a lot of time and gasoline proving the other woman is innocent of the murder she confessed to in great detail.

Reacher seemed off his game in this one...not quite catching all the cues and clues. I didn...more
