This was a great way to understand the time Christ lived in (the Bible being the best of course, Then Jesus the Christ by James Talmage) through characters that crossed his path, Christ is not the main character in this novel but is the main point of this novel. It is a wonderful journey I did feel a gained a bit of insight into that time, a greater appreciation of what was involved with those early saints and humble followers of Christ and what they went through with so many different cultures ...more

I love reading books that close friends have recommended to me. I know my friend better now after reading his favorite book.

I really enjoyed this book -- the best part is the last chapter in part 1. I feel like this book went on a little too long, once Lucanus began meeting with the biblical figures to write his Gospel, I felt this part was a bit repetitive.

But the atmosphere of ancient Rome was fantastic, and Lucanus's journey to faith was well worth the read.

This book is a novel, but I believe a pretty historically close novel. It takes place in the antient world around the peak and beginning of the fall of Rome. It follows the life of St. Luke and his relationship to Jesus Christ. He never actually met Jesus in this life, but without knowing it, was always searching for him. There is great character building that makes them truly believable. The author gives a bibliography of the research he has done.

Taylor Caldwell studied for 20 years to write this book about the life of St. Luke. I have thoroughly enjoyed Taylor Caldwell's writing since I was a young girl. This is one of her best.

From Amazon.com:

Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?&qu...more

I loved this book! We know so little about Luke and I realize that this is fiction but Ms. Caldwell is almost more historian than fiction writer in many ways. Her grasp on Rome and the what lead to its fall is powerful. I had read this initially as a library copy but I had order my own because there was so many great quotes to mark...The following quote is my favorite...

"You misunderstand me, Priscus. I know that it was inevitable that Rome become what she is. Republics decay into dem...more

This was a pretty amazing book to read. It reminded me in many ways of the book called The Robe in that it teaches about the times of Christ. I love reading historical novels because it brings so much to life for me. The setting for most of the book was NOT in Israel, but in Rome. I learned so much about how the fall of Rome took place. I learned much also about the Greeks, both of whom I didn't know much about. There was one part of it that got kind of steemy for me that went just a bit t...more

I read this book when I was 11 several adults I knew loved this book . It was one of the first "adult books" I ever read, so it made a significant impression on me. I was fascinated by the story and I read it several times over my young adulthood. Although I haven't read this book in more than 5 years, I still remember the story quite vividly (which is not that usual for me). I really enjoyed the writing style. Not surprisingly, because I was so young, my favorite chapters where of y...more

Amazing... I know why this book is world famous. In the words of another reviewer "Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?" And it is of this Lucanus that Taylor Caldwell tells here in one of the most stirring stories ever lived or written.&q...more

An imaginative account of the childhood and precipitating influences leading to Luke's (of the New Testament) discipleship in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and his eventual selection as one of the twelve disciples (apostles). Entertaining, though clearly in no way historical, nonetheless it is an enjoyable look at "possibilities."

What was the apostle/physician Luke like? This book purports to tell us and coming as it does from the hand of Taylor Caldwell, it is one good read! Luke happens to be a Biblical persona about whom I wish we did know more -- and so this book probably struck a chord for me that it may not for others.

Wonderful story of Saint Luke. I did not think that I would be truly interested in the subject matter but it was fantastic! This was certainly the best book I have ever read. I don't believe that it is in print anymore but if you can get your hands on a copy I highly advise reading it.

"Dear & Glorious Physician" is a beautiful story.

Exceptionally well- written. Taylor Caldwell is tops in my estimation.

I recommend this book to anyone. It is a time-tested and time-honored classic.

I'm trying to locate a hardcover copy in good condition.

I am learning a lot from reading this book. Luke was my grandmother's favorite gospel, and the emphasis on stories of the women and the healings appeal to me also. The book is long though...I am listening to it on tape.

I love the story of St. Luke as told by Taylor Caldwell. Maybe it's because he's not a Jew converting to Christianity, or that he faces the same types of faith crises that most people face.

This is an historical fiction book based on the life of St. Luke. It is a true love story of a man's battle with God, as he loses all those he loves, but what he gains in the end!

Don't be put off by the subject matter. This is an easy and engaging read, part history lesson, part inspirational portrait of St. Luke.
