This book is part one of a three part series, the next two being the Louise de la Valliere, and the final being the more well known Man in the Iron Mask. I understand this was originally one HUGE book, but is now more commonly broken up into these three books.
This book starts about ten years from where Twenty Years After ended. Although the book is titled the Vicomte de Bragelonne (who is the son of Athos), we don't see much of him except for the first and last parts of the book. The rest i...more

This book is listed on Wikipedia as one of the longest novels ever written and I can understand that! It took me a long time to read, partly because I didn't have huge stretches of time to devote to it and partly because it was massive. The book is often split into three to four parts, including The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Ten Years Later, Louise de la Vallière, and The Man in the Iron Mask. I didn't find the first three parts nearly as captivating as the last chapter...more

From Wikipedia:
"The third and last of the d'Artagnan Romances following The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. It appeared first in serial form between 1847 and 1850. In the English translations the 268 chapters of this large volume are usually subdivided into three, but sometimes four or even five individual books. In three-volume English editions, the three volumes are titled "The Vicomte de Bragelonne", "Louise de la Vallière", and "The Man in the Iron...more

One of the books that made me cry; slow at times but the closing is as strong as a hammer.
7/6/8 Finally completed rereading it. The problem I have with some books (when rereading them) is that they slow down at times; and I am particularly sensitive to that. I finally skipped some portions of it and then went to the grand finale.
Which of course made me cry; this is drama (manly and mainly). But is a very good book.

The third installment of The Three Musketeers. This novel begins to follow the youthful King Louis XIV as he struggles against Cardinal Mazarin's iron fist for the power that is rightfully his. D'Artagnan loyally protects and defends his king, as always, and the adventures of the four comrades expoud.

I don't know know if this is the right edition (the edition I read must have been excavated from a an ancient library), but it is imperative that one read the entire Vicomte -- not just the poorly excerpted "Man in the Iron Mask" and "10 Years Later" variations.

From wikipedia: The Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847): When published in English it was usually split into three parts: The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valliere, and The Man in the Iron Mask, of which the last part is the best known.

It kind of drives me crazy how Dumas spends 3 or 4 chapters building up a new character, just to never mention him again. But overall, a good read.

How can you resist characters like Athos?! Not as good as the Three Musketeers nor Twenty Years After. But still good.

Unfortunately the Musketeers are relegated to the sidelines and one of their sons becomes the focus. Not as great.

The first third of the second sequel to The Three Musketeers. Good, but incomplete, obviously.

Roul, the son of Athos, great story that digs into the life of Athos.
