I was really taken with this fictional memior of Dawn Powell. I don't know much about her other than I had read that she is a "hidden treasure" author. It was a striking comparison with "A Girl Named Zippy" (another recent favorite) because both authors kept the child's point of view as they are describing events that clearly have deeper significance ("we love living in a hotel room!") and that could result self-pity from the viewpoint of the adult. Powell also w...more

Dawn Powell is a find. This "autobiographical novel" details Powell's upbringing in small-town Ohio in the late 19th century. Very fine characterizations of her family -- her mother, father, sisters, step-mother, grandparents, and others come well and truly alive, as does the experience of growing up as a very bright girl/young woman in an extremely provincial setting. Gore Vidal apparently tried to lead a "Dawn Powell revival" some years back, but I don't think it really too...more

Dawn Powell is one of my favorite authors and this is my favorite of her books that I have read thus far. Although this is fiction, it is her most autobiographical work. I was deeply moved by the portrayal of her childhood in Ohio. I feel this book compares favorably to other poignant stories of childhood such as Angela's Ashes and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
I highly recommend "My Home Is Far Away".

This was my second time reading this. It really doesn't get any better than this ... she out-Dorothy-Parkers Dorothy Parker. It's fast, it's funny, it's insightful, it's marvelous. Even the most despicable characters are treated with affection and empathy. Read this now!
