I did not like the protagonist of "Hunter's Run" at all. Of course, that was the point. By the end of the book I did find myself respecting and rooting for him, but still not liking him.
The sci-fi elements of this book don't get in the way of the story, as they do with some books in this genre. (I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, really, so when it devolves into nothing but aliens and future technology my brain shuts off for some reason.) This is a twisted tale about a character gettin...more

This is another book that I bought based solely on who wrote it. I love Martin and Abraham is also a great writer, though I had never heard of Dozois prior to this. I didn't know what I would think, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Hunter's Run has action, drama, humor and bizarre aliens; just about all you could ask for in a great sci-fi book. Is it a masterpiece? I still can't quite decide...

My favorite part of this book is what most reviewers seem to dislike the most: the main character...more

I hated this protagonist. He's foul, mean, awnry and just downright despicable, but he's tough. I guess that is it's own virtue (rather dirty, slightly shabby virtue). I didn't like him at all. Then there'd be times I'd start to think he was all right and he'd do something to make me hate him again, BOTH of him. But, wow, what a powerful story with practically no resolution and a whole slew of questions left in its wake! Three heads are definitely better than one on this one. The story fl...more

I really enjoyed this book. The main character, Ramon is a selfish son of a b*tch with few, if any admirable or redeeming traits. How then, do you make this an excellent read with fascinating exploration and revelation into the human psyche. The plot was solid and I did not think predicable at all, in fact, it downright surprised at times, but in a way that made me realize it totally made sense. These guys can write. Not sure how one pulls off a cooperative work like this, but it definitely came...more

Ramon is a prospector, drunk, loner, and fucking asshole. He ends up in the uncharted wilderness on the run from the law. There he discovers a hidden alien colony, is captured, and then forced to serve as a hunting dog. Leashed, the aliens use him to track down one of his own; another human who had discovered the aliens and escaped.

This is a good sci-fi read that I would recommend. It has plenty of action, interesting character layers, and unique situations that will make you ponder.

Ramon is a loner on the world of Sao Paulo but periodically has to come to town to gather supplies and visit his "woman," where they drink, fight, and make-up only to do the same until Ramon goes back into the wilderness prospecting for minerals. He kills a man and has to run...he meets up with aliens and then the story really begins. There's an amazing concept in this book that I can't say anything about without giving it away--and you need to read it for yourself.

This was better than I was expecting. Books with multiple writers kind of turn me off but this adventure tale set in the far future on some distant planet was pretty captivating. The story is simple--guy in wilderness, trying to hide from cops, comes in contact with aliens. The battle to survive this and other moments is the crux of the story and there are enough turns to keep you interested the entire way. Fun sci-fi adventure tale that would make a great genre movie.

What can I say? George "Railroad" Martin hasn't let me down yet, though I have no idea who the co-writers are, and tend to think that co-written popular fiction is a big fat scam. And reading cheeseball sci-fi isn't so embarrassing in hardcover, since you can remove the jacket for reading on subway rides and in other public places.

I liked this a lot. An elegant, violent, satisfying little sci-fi fable.

I couldn't put this down. Post-contact and -colonisation sci-fi starring one of those rare, difficult-to-like but ultimately loveable protagonists. There's a crime, there's a strange discovery, there's a kidnapping by aliens, there's a chase through a jungle full of strange animals, and there's a twist that made my jaw drop. Read this.

I don't read much SF, not since I was a teenager. I only bought the book because George R. R. Martin is one of the authors.

It's about a miserable, angry, unlikable man who encounters an alien race while he's on the run from the law.

Saying much more might spoil the story, so I'll simply recommend it -- to anyone, not just SF readers.

This is one of the better science fiction books that I have read (although that is not many). It had a very good story and interesting characters.
One thing you should know: there is an abundance of vulgar language. The main character has a foul mouth and he readily spews cuss words in both english and spanish.

There I was worried that I'd lost my appetite for sff...picked up Hunter's Run , started reading and only put it down again when it was time to go to bed...and finished the very next day. I can't really begin to say in how many way I loved this book. Just read it and you'll see. :o)

4.0 stars. Good, solid SF story. The book includes nice world-building featuring original aliens and a well thought put back-sotry. The main character is very interesting (if not very likeable) and there is good, quality action. All and all, a quick enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this story. It's a short read; minimalist sort of a sci-fi mystery. The main character is obnoxious, but the plot twist sort of takes care of that. It can be read pretty shallow, but it does raise some redemption issues as well what what does it mean to be "you".

So far, I'm enjoying this book, I was at first put-off by the sci-fi element but it's really taken a strange turn and I can't wait to see how it turns out. A good comment on human nature, too I think.

I don't know who wrote what in this collaboration, but it turned out just fine! The main character isn't that sympathetic, but it's a great read. Some interesting twists that I won't spoil.

Quick and enjoyable SF read involving survival and a chase through the wild and (always a treat) alien/human interaction. Our anti-hero Ramon is one tough and complicated dude.

Frontier colony world with a prospector finding more than he was expecting. Plenty of action with some reflection on what it means to be human.

Interesting science-fiction book. The idea behind the story is nice, but the book failed to completely captivate me
