I can never be a disinterested reviewer of this book. It was my first experience with the literature of Antarctica and it set me on a lifelong love of the Great South. I still have my 1938 copy, a treasured gift from my father.

In 1933, Admiral Richard E. Byrd spent six months alone at the South Pole. Totally isolated, he began suffering symptoms of mental and physical illness. By the time he discovered that carbon monoxide from a defective stovepipe was poisoning him, he was engaged in a ...more

Even though I've been obsessed with cold places for as long as I can remember and hav elong wanted to visit Antarctica, this book added fuel to that fire, setting my imagination soaring with visions of white expanses and the dangerous era of exploration. This is a fantastic and exciting read. I like to re-read it on warm days in the summer when it's too hot and imagining being alone at South Pole cools me down, or even in blustery wintry days when it's nice to be reminded that, hey, it could be ...more

Totally amazing. He survives a winter in the antarctic, in a wood shack, alone, nearly dying of carbon monoxide poisoning in the process. The average temp inside his hut during the entire time was -30 F. Seriously. And this was in the 1920s. They don't make men like that any more.

Excellent account of Byrd's solitary stay in an underground shack in Antarctica back in the 1930's. I found it incredibly interesting and well-written. And I have definitely decided I never want to spend months alone in an underground shack in Antarctica.

A great polar adventure. This book details the lonely life of an adventurer and explorer. It was informative and fun to read. I could live in the Arctic, vicariously through reading this great novel.

This book was very good. Great vocabulary. I knew of Admiral Byrd and Little America, but I didn't know this story of the advance station. I found it informative and interesting.

recommends it for: penguins.
This book is really cool. Byrd spent months on the south pole by himself. He nearly died. Also, one time his eyes froze together when he blinked.

Imagine five months by oneself, underneath the polar ice.

In 1932.

Fascinating, engaging read.
