*I received a free ARC of How to Write a Thesis from MIT Press via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review*

ARC received on November 10th 2014.

When I saw that this has been translated to English, I requested it straight away. As a grad student, I'll take all the help I can get in writing a thesis that will make sense and help me get my MA.

Posted on my book blog.

I'm currently enrolled in a Master's program and about to start working on my thesis in Museum Studies. Since I used to be a Medicine student, I'm more familiar with scientific research, so I wanted a book that was more focused on other kinds of works. This one by Umberto Eco seems to be regarded as the authority in the matter.

It was a nice read (even if the author can seem rather unorthodox at times) and overall quite useful. I read an older edition so the research chapte

Reading How to Write a Thesis by Umberto Eco, even an ‘updated’ version in this MIT Press edition, felt like a sweet exercise in futility. There’s something folksy and quaint about being told how to put notes on index cards and properly organize them and being given tips for using the library and talking to librarians. (Not too surprising, as Eco wrote this in the late seventies—almost forty years ago!) But with over twenty-three editions and countless translations, there’s something to be sai ...more

I have this in Danish and used it a lot when I wrote my thesis years ago.

It is indeed a brilliant book, full of humour and humanism, which displays the author's enormous erudition (from medieval philosophy to post-war American SF novels) almost as an afterthought. I have learnt a lot from Eco as I was writing my MA thesis, especially about how to select and narrow down your topic to make sure that it is manageable and at the same time you don't expose yourself to an avalanche of criticism from your referees. The second half of the book is undeniably outdated - I don' ...more

This classic for struggling master's students everywhere is still worth reading.

OK, some of the material is outdated. You may skip the section on how to find material in the library, or how to organize material into paper slips, because everybody uses computers these days. But the rest of the book holds up.

One thing to admire is the clarity and grippingness of the prose. The book flows naturally without hiccups. Eco, the Professor-Uncle everybody can only love, makes intertextual referencing re

Great book. It can go from serious academic writing advice to pretty humourous considerations in a turn of page. The most technical sections, like the ones that instruct how to make correct bibliographic citations, may be outdated these days (the book was published in the 70's), but even those can be useful as general parameters.
Personally, I prefer Eco's theoretical works more than the literary ones. His enciclopedic knowledge on the letters, humanities and philosophy fields are better accomoda

Despite the passage of 40 years since the first edition of this text, 32 from the second and almost 20 since I've read it the first time, and although many things have changed because now there is not such a deer need need for a library, but often it is enough a fast Internet connection, this book remains almost intact in its value for any college student. Even the English translation is done quite well, it would almost seem that the translator has read another book by Eco: "Experiences in trans ...more

Eminently useful and enjoyable book that does exactly what it promises - guides you as you prepare to write a thesis. Written for the pre-computer era, but found many of his observations useful (particularly those around organizing your information), and enjoyed his repeated insistence on the experience of writing a thesis as the most important part, not the product itself.

Recommends it for: people desperate about their thesis

Umberto Eco is an Italian writer of fiction, essays, academic texts, and children's books, and certainly one of the finest authors of the twentieth century. A professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna, Eco’s brilliant fiction is known for its playful use of language and symbols, its astonishing array of allusions and references, and clever use of puzzles and narrative inventions. “A thesis should take no more than three years because, if the student has failed to delimit his topic and find the necessary sources after this period, he has one of the following problems: 1. The student has chosen an overwhelming topic that is beyond his skill level. 2. The student is one of those insatiable persons who would like to write about everything, and who will continue to work on his thesis for 20 years. (A clever scholar will instead set limits, however modest, and produce something definitive within those limits.) 3. The “thesis neurosis” has begun: the student abandons the thesis, returns to it, feels unfulfilled, loses focus, and uses his thesis as an alibi to avoid other challenges in his life that he is too cowardly to address. This student will never graduate.” 0 likes
“Vallet wrote of something else. Stimulated in some mysterious way by what he was saying, I made that connection myself and, and as I identified the idea with the text I was underlining, I attributed it to Vallet. And for more than twenty years I had been grateful to the old abbot for something he had never given me. I had produced the magic key on my own.” 0 likes
