It's cute. It's almost a graphic novel--but there's just enough text to keep it a book. I like the black and white w/occasional touches of red format.
But there's something a little TOO cute here, something that says "isn't this all so witty and charming"?
It reminds me of Eloise. And I HATE Eloise....

Well, this came Tuesday, and I couldn't tear myself away. Ottoline and the Yellow Cat is the story of Ottoline and her companion Mr. Monroe, a small, hairy bog creature from Norway. They live in the Pepperpot building while Ottoline's parents are away traveling. They collect fabulous items such as emperors' hats, meteorites, extremely small paintings, portable fish bowls, and hot-water bottles.More... While they are away, Marion's Bathroom Supplies, The 1000-Strong Lightbulb-Changing Company, Sm...more

The art is definitely five stars, the story about three and three quarters. Great young reader series that finally doesn't feel like everything else (Judy Moody, Junie B., Just Grace, and even Clementine, though I love Clementine) plus mystery, foreign destinations, a hairy Norwegian bog man (that looks like Cousin It!), and lots of little drawings with arrows (!!!). I think what dulled the story for me was that... well, that I'm not seven, but also the Yellow Cat herself is creepy. Yugh. Think ...more

This is the best book I've ever read!!!!!!!! An exciting new character-based mini series for young readers. Introducing Miss Ottoline Brown, an Mistress of Disguise, and her partner , Mr Munroe. No puzzle is ever too tricky for the two of them to solve . . . Ottoline lives in a stylish apartment in Big City with a small hairy creature called Mr Munroe. Together they look after the Brown familys eclectic collections - and dabble in a spot of detective work. So they are the first to the scene of ...more

Fantastically (and heavily) illustrated, quirky characters and situations, a strange bog creature from Norway, absent parents, a cat burglar, a girl who always wears two different shoes, pillow plumpers - what's not to like? There's very little text on each page, and much of the mood of the story is conveyed through the illustrations, which are great to pore over. Ottoline is odd and resourceful - and I love her fashion sense. The story is simple enough - I sped through it and didn't notice t...more

Ottoline and the Yellow Cat, by Chris Riddell of Edge Chronicles fame, is the kind of book you might imagine if Roald Dahl and Brian Selznick had teamed up on a graphic novel. Ottoline is a young girl whose parents travel the world and leave her home in the family townhouse in the care of a friendly, hairy creature-person named Mr. Monroe.
I loved the characters in this book. Ottoline's a little like Pippi Longstocking -- brave and funny and always up for an adventure. And Mr. Monroe.... well...more

With Ottoline's meticulous note taking and Mr. Munroe's bravery, everything is set aright. Bottom line...with the help of friends and a clever plan, great things are accomplished. I just fell in love with the two main characters and am fascinated with the parental guidance via postcards from all over the world. Just how do Ottoline's parents know what's going on at home if they're off globe trotting? I am definitely envisioning 3rd and 4th graders having a Master of Disguise party where the requ...more

Some books you read and feel like you've known them all your life, like they were classics that you remember only you can't have read them before because this book is new. That's the sort of book this is: It feels like an instant classic, like something that belongs to children's literature. So sure-footed and well-done that it feels effortless.

Ottoline and her companion, Mr. Munroe (a long-haired creature from a bog in Norway), investiage a series of dog-nappings and jewelry thefts. From dogs named Rupert Pom Pom Fluffy Tail and Fifi Fiesta Funny Face III to a bear disguised as a fine lady, the humor is in the details of both the simple but clever story and the delightful line drawings on every page.

The book Ottoline and the Yellow Cat is about an ingenious and witty young girl who has the ability to collect unusual items while solving mysteries. Ottoline takes it upon herself to solve a big neighborhood mystery with the help of some unlikely characters. The mystery involves the residents in her neighborhood, jewelry, missing pets, and a lapdog agency. The story is excitingly funny along with some great illustrations. My son and I can’t wait to continue reading about Ottoline and her uniq...more

the cover caught my eyerecommends it for: reluctant 3rd-5th graders
People will either think this book is kooky and creative or bizarre and unfinished. I felt it was all of the above. I didn't like the labeling of items and characters. I thought that was idiotically redundant - it is a visual work after all. I did like the clues hidden in the illustrations and the characterizations -for instance, the description of Mr.Munroe's origins was both ludicrous and hilarious. Ottoline and the Yellow Cat is just an odd book or should I say a unique work of art?

This is a gorgeously illustrated and designed book- I marvelled at just about every page. Even the little art around the page numbers is charming. But the storyline was a little hard to follow and I felt like I do sometimes when I'm watching a British film and don't "get" it. Ottoline and Mr. Monroe are a delightful detective team and I'll read the next in the series in the hopes that I "get" that one more.

A colleague raved about this title and I'd have to say the synopsis is more fun that the tale itself. I was particularly distracted by how the reader has to keep going from the text to the illustration, mid-thought, as guided by the narrator. Very annoying. Great concept, great illustrations, poor execution.

I loved this quick clever little book! I'm a big fan of illustrated/semi-graphic novels like this one. The black and white (with a single hint of red in each) pencil drawings were fun to look at, along with the explanatory text boxes. I can't wait to read the rest of the mysteries in this series.

I read an advance copy of this book at work. It's a clever read for elementary school kids with enough inside jokes for people like me to enjoy also (like how the pixar movies make adults and kids laugh). Great pictures, lots of detail, but not in that "too much detail" sort of way. Very cute.

A fantastic read. This book was entertaining, funny, and just plain fun. I loved the artwork, it was so much fun to read the little snippets that were written in the artwork. A great story about a girl, her best friend and the clever plan they used to solve a crime.

Very cool pictures! I love the arrows pointing everything out. It reminds me of this series I read when I was little called "Something Queer is Going On". Those books had lots of interesting arrows, too.

I absolutely LOVED the illustrations!! What a cute mystery book and fun to read to my kid. After we read it, my daughter wanted me to try and find a stuffed hairy Mr. Monroe to sleep with at night.
