This book tells history masterfully, through the stories of people who all knew one woman named Chiwid. The collection of stories is respectful and fascinating. It captures the voices of Native and non-Native people living in the Chilcotin from the 1920s right up to the 1990s and portrays both the cooperation and the tension characteristic of that time of great change. Beautiful book.

I hope when I get the urge to complain about life, that I will think about this indomitable woman, and just forge ahead.
