This is one of the creepiest crime/horror novels of all time. The author was surprised at the way it was received in Japan, where it has won at least one major literary award as a mystery.
The central character is a teen whose only clear career path is to grow up to be a serial killer. I know of no other way to describe him.

i really enjoyed this manga, it’s one of my favourites. it has something of a morbid story line, focused around various cases of murder… but i wouldn’t say it’s primarily a murder mystery. there is definitely that aspect to the story, but because the main characters react as they do to these murders.. well lets say that the death helps to set the mood of the story more than drive plot (at the beginning of the story anyways). both main characters have some connection to an obsession to death and...more
So I tend to read a lot of books that I find at random at Barnes and Noble, or Borders by just scanning the new paperbacks and the books they put out on tables. I have had a lot of success with finding great books this way that I never would have found other wise.

1st story: Wristcut, the story begin with ordinary murderer who took his victim's hand, even a puppet hand. Question for this chapter: where the boy took the hands to? and I still don't get about the garbage route.

This is one of the most visually disturbing books I've read. Anyone who is interested in the macabre, horror and noir is likely to enjoy this.
I think I'll go back and read the novel it was based upon and see how the manga compares.

OMG, this was such a great book. A serial killer in training meets his perfect target, yet she has a dark past of her own. So before he even gets a chance at her... she shows off that she isn't such a fool. Though even though she's pretty goth and dark herself, she doesn't quite realize what kind of person she's befriended.

I've had this manga on hold for a while now. I came across the novel a long time ago and didn't want to see the movie or read the manga before I had chance to read the novel. However, I couldn't resist the movie any longer and really enjoyed it. As I'd seen the movie, I figured there was no real reason to hold off on the manga any longer (although I still haven't laid my hands on the novel).

I read this when I was in high school because my friend recommended it.
She LOVED this book.
But for me, is was too upsetting and depressing.
Who would want to read a book about a girl who kills her twin sister or a guy who collects other person's hands?
Who would read about a dreadful scream of those who're drowning in their coffin, under ground, and the guy who enjoy's listening to it?
Please, don't think all the Japanese books are like this.
And don't read this book if you don't want to feel, like,...more

Very, very creepy! I read the manga version of Otsuichi’s story Goth. This morbid story is about two students (a boy and girl) who find a serial killer’s notebook. Both are fascinated by death and explore the killer’s thoughts. The boy is already a serial killer in training. He pretends to be like everyone else, however, he harbors dark, disturbing thoughts. I think I've overindulged in my reading of horror manga today. This manga wasn't that scary, but it's definitely very vivid. If you don't like seeing gory images, then you better steer clear of this one. This manga depressed me, even if I do like tragedy stories.

When I first read a scanlation of this manga, it left a lasting impression in my memory. So much that, when it had been released in English, I rushed to the bookshop to buy it.
For me, it was an interesting twist on the usual mystery genre where this time the main character wasn't what you'd call a good guy. A sociopath would be more apt. I didn't care for this manga at all. Some quick caveats first: I haven't read many comics outside of Alan Moore and have never read a manga before. Also, this was recommended to me by someone who said it was composed of six "stories"--so I thought he meant six stories of prose.
The layout of this book annoys me. The pages and panels go from right to left, but of course English words go left to right. So there's an annoying asymmetry to the whole book. Why don't they just make it go left to right...more

This one was a bit weird for me, but I found it compulsive reading anyway. The content is a little brutal at times, falls on this side of disturbing, and plays mind games to boot. The six interconnected stories are essentially mysteries; there is a puzzle to solve for each one and the explanations can be fun. But that's not quite my thing.

GOTH es una serie de historias donde un chico y una chica muy inteligentes (y con una inquietante afición por el gore) se ven envueltos en espeluznantes casos detectivescos.
Es algo desagradable, pero destaca mucho por lo sórdido de sus protagonistas y por un caso final realmente bueno. Pero quizás te pase como a mí, que pese a que me parece una obra maestra, quizás haya visto demasiadas vísceras y haya acabado empachado.

Otsuichi shows the real deal with this story. I never really understood what Goth meant. How can I especially with the way people easily brand others nowadays? The stereotype Goth was those who wear dark-colored clothes, are fond of the occult, and have a dark perspective in life. But the Goths in this manga were different.

SO CREEPY. I don't usually read horror (in graphic novel or novel form), but Kendi Oiwa's art style intrigued me. I *did* really like the style, particularly the way Yoru Morino is illustrated. Some of the more gruesome panels turned my stomach, though. Not for the faint of heart, to put it mildly.
This book literally made me poo my pants. It's truly representative of how disgusting and life-like Japanese horror can be. Bespeckled by various short "mysteries" and eventually accumulating to a surprising close, Goth sends shivers down to my buttcrack every time I read it. A little confusing around the end, and it's really easy to hate the main characters, but a solid read nonetheless.
This book was horrible, which is something I rarely say. This book had horrible pacing problems and little to no character development. My biggest problem was character design, it was hard to tell characters apart and the layout of panels were off, I can't point out how they were off but they we hard to read at times. Overall I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

This mangafication of the Otsuichi novel of the same name features a pair of death-obsessed teenagers who have a knack for stumbling upon serial killers in their midst. As a result, though horrifying scenes abound, this horror is couched in a world of coincidental whimsy. Perhaps this is a personal failing, but I prefer my serial killers without whimsy.
Another manga I picked up for gratuitous violence and blood. I wasn't disappointed on that account, and some of the stories were actually pretty chilling and smart. But the Princess Peachiness of the female character just made me cringe in so many ways. The art is remarkably detailed, though.
At first I thought Goth would be like a Manga version of EC horror comics. These four macabre tales all have surprise twisty type endings, but no humor. Or maybe really dry Japanese humor that I don't get. Goth seems like it is trying to be a shocking portrayal of the darkest parts of the human condition, but it comes off pretty hokey.
pretty disturbing and creepy in equally subtle and non-subtle ways. contains 6 mini but semi connected stories. the fourth story "Twins" is my favorite. The tone is so dark and the imagery is unapologetically gory. buried toddlers? severed hands? auto-asphyxiation? perfect!
Story was very dark and violent, but I liked the drawings in this one (mostly) the characters looked the ages they were supposed to be, parts of the story were interesting, but the violence was a bit much. I won't be reading anymore though I'm glad I checked this out.
