My name is Lola. I am the “Zoe” in Ma-Ling’s book.
DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK, DO NOT ENCOURAGE THIS WOMAN!
I have been abused and terrorised by this psycho for 2 years. I was the perfect victim, just got out of an 8 year relation with a pimp, just turned 26, I never lived a normal life. I was completely lost. I am from St-Michel’s neighbourhood in Montreal, I spent my teenage in a violent environment, and from 19 to 26 I ran the most successful and high rated agency in Montreal. Ma-Ling Lee's memoir from her early life as a black market Korean orphan, her early years as a runaway, starting her first brothel at the tender age of 16, and subsequently running a successful brothel in New Jersey. Mostly this is about her road to being a madame, including a string of abusive boyfriends. Typical passages there would include things like 'I was really in love with him' and then paragraphs or pages later, the guy would be stalking her/screwing her over/beating her/having sex with...more
Mediocre at best, this is a fast read and it does have a ring of truth to it. Having worked in the service industry for a long time in New York, I've been aware forever that the sex industry is a very different place in the higher tax brackets. Ms Lee's descriptions jibe with what I know of how things function in that world. The book is more centered on the mechanics of how the industry functions than on the day-to day nitty-gritty of life as a high end call girl though, so if you're looking for...more
The book was pretty interesting in a sense that you learn about the evolving world of prostitution (i.e moving away from working on the streets and more into online marketing, etc) and what a big business it can be.
I expected a little bit more from the book...don't know what exactly but just more. Maybe more details about the author's life or more details about her work. But it seems that every time she brings in some details she will suddenly remember that she needs to keep things private and...more

I've read a lot of books about this topic, and so far this has been the best of all of them. Ma-Ling Lee is frank about the industry she works in, and she says upfront that people who get involved in it are typically messed up or have some issues. I can easily count on two hands how many people I know who are involved in some way (whether it be stripping, prostitution, topless waitressing, subs and doms and even sexual abuse therapists), and most of them are messed up or know people who are mess...more

Recommends it for:
feminists, people interested in sex industry
Caught my eye at the library, and ended up being a really interesting book. It was not the sensational, smutty, tell-all memoir I was hoping for. Instead, it explained in great detail how a 13 year old runaway became one of the most successful madams in the United States, and explained the ins and outs of the business of sex. I found her opinions very interesting. To read that she is trying to get her girls health and dental insurance, considers prostitution morally wrong, and believes marriage...more
Well written, but would have liked the Employee Handbook first and then a chronological narrative. Story starts at what could be the end, but then I don't know how it ends when I finish the book. How much is the co-author responsible for the writing style and language use? Author seems educated, smart business-wise. Reads like a business how-to manual/lecture for a good part of the book, but not boring or dull as a textbook could be.
Definitely not the stuff of great literature but a fun read nonetheless--and very educational if you know very little about the prostitution industry. I also wonder about the mental health of the author. She says that writing the book saved her thousands in therapy, but considering what she has been through and where she is now, she might want to look into it!

Not the most well-written of books, but an interesting story I suppose.
Although this wasn't really what I was expecting it to be it was still a very interesting read. Ma-Ling Lee, which is not her real name, tells the story of how she became a madam at the age of sixteen. I'm not sure that I can believe all of what she says in this book, but then I can't say I really don't either.
If your interested in the game, (pimps, hos, hustlers, and that side of life) then this book will be something that you don't want to miss.
