Franklin writes about shotgun toting, skoal chewing, good old boys with such respect and lack of judgment that their sad, depleted lives take on almost Shakespearean grandeur.
He also knows how to string together a sentence of beauty and complexity; anybody grown tired of turgid, minimalist prose should give this book a gander.

I gave this book four starts, almost just on the merit of the last story, self-titled "Poachers."
Although there are some other very good stories, this one reminded me of McCarthy's Tennessee or O'Connor's Georgia. Worth the quick read.

Thank you, Rick, for recommending this book and subsequently letting me "not return it."
This is a great book of Southern short stories ... and it helps if you're from the South and know what Franklin's talking about.

This is one of my favorite collections of fiction. Planning on reading his longer stuff soon. I don't see how anyone could have rated this one below a four.

A great short story collection. Make sure you have your anti-depressant prescription filled before you embark on the mission of reading it, though.

I really liked this collection of short stories. It was gruesome, truthful and well demonstrated the simplistic intrigue that the south offers us.

This was a nice airport read, but as always I enjoyed his novel more.
