The latest Myron Bolitar mystery/thriller is a fast easy read. Bolitar, is a sports agent, but sometimes gets involved in solving mysteries. Several years before he had a relationship with Teresa Collins, a beautiful news anchor who fell off the grid. He receives a call from her to come to Paris and when he meets up with her gets involved in a mystery concerning her ex husband's death and seemingly sees a blond teenager who may or may not be Collins's daughter. One theme of the book is that sometimes it is necessary to torture people to get access to their secrets. It is odious, but it saves lives, so isn't it morally acceptable to do so?
I viscerally hate this kind of thinking, even in fiction, and must speak against it.
When people are tortured, they are tortured until they say what they say what their captors want to hear. If they don't know details of a terrorist plot, the torture will continue until they cough something up, true or not. This alone...more

Myron and I go way back. I first discovered the series around the third or fourth book so that's at least ten years ago. And boy, was I hooked! Coben really ruined Myron when he "gave" Myron a son. Myron is not the kind of person who can be a father without being a daddy. Maybe that's why he took several years away from Myron and focused on standalones (never as good as Myron). So, the last one (Promise Me) was good but I think Coben didn't quite know how to deal with son, parents, and an aging...more
I liked Myron Bolitar better when he was in just paperback. Ever since these hard back Bolitars, he's weaker. I don't know if Harlan Coben things sissyness comes with age but after his return to his Myron Bolitar character, he's made Myron a total wimp--always crying and saying cheesy things and the way he has Myron describe his feelings towards whoever his current love interest is at the time, it's like Michael Bolton is singing it. I'm not digging the Hardback Myron. I want Paperback Myron bac...more

Myron Bolitar is your basic gifted athlete who had his entire career turn to dust with a knee injury in his first NBA game. Following that he went to Harvard Law School, and now his is an entertainment agent. He also has a knack for some minor detective work, and a best friend Win with "special skills". In this novel, a long lost friend asks Myron to come to Paris. What starts out as search for a missing man, morphs into interactions with Interpol, the CIA and Homeland security. Add frozen embry...more
Myron Bolitar and Terese Collins had a torrid affair on an island ten years previously, but he has neither seen nor heard from her since. He's become involved in a relationship with Ali Wilder, a widow with two children--one being ten year old Jack, whom is in fifth grade and is on the basketball team. Myron attends his games and ends up in a row with the coach from the other team and his buddies because of their ill treatment toward Jack during the game. Between he and Win, they badly injure tw...more
Harlan Coben is rising fast in my estimation. For the longest time, Robert B. Parker and Spencer and Hawk sat at the top of my pile of favorites. Parker's writing style and character development fit what I liked to read. Then I stumbled on Robert Crais and Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. Now there are two authors and four characters that I really like.
With yet one more serendipitous discovery, there are now three authors sitting at the top of my pile with the addition of Harlan Coben and Myron Bolitar...more

This is one book in a series featuring Myron Bolitar, a handsome ex-athlete who seems just a little full of himself, probably with some justification. His best friend is rich beyond dreams of avarice, which is handy given some of the scrapes the lead finds himself in, which are best solved if you have millions of dollars at your disposal. I haven't read the other books, but I enjoyed this one so much I will definitely look them up.

Beginning to exhaust my hunt for the loner, the hunter as a singular and main hero...a new trend seems to be emerging, the disassociation of the hunter and conscientious hero into two separate characters: the main character and his loner side-kick. Several authors embrace this genre motif: Robert Crais's Elvis Cole and his side-kick Joe Pike and of course Harlan Coben's Mylor Bolitar and his elitist side-kick Win.

Harlan Coben- Long Lost 3.75 Stars
When Myron Bolitar receives a strange phone call from a long lost fling asking him to go to Paris, he is reluctant to go considering his current relationship. When he finally does decide to go he finds himself thrown into the midst of something far scarier than he could have ever imagined. Even Win may not be able to help him. This cloak and dagger mystery will lead him to new places as he tries to help Terese find her daughter whom she though to be dead.

#9 in the Myron Bolitar series seemed a bit unbelievable (suspended belief not always necessary in this series) but also more current and up to date with Arab terrorists added to the mix of a possible not-dead daughter of Myron's one time lover, Teresa. Also seemed strange that a brother and sister to Myron, never previously mentioned that I can remember, are suddenly part of a conversation but no details except the brother is in South America. Perhaps this is a clue what #10 Live Wire, might be...more
Sometimes it is very difficult to put into words how good a book really is, "Long Lost" is such a book.
Those of you who red Harlan Coben know how good a mystey writer he is, and he has gone to another level with this book.

LONG LOST is a mixed bag. It has a great plot, but suffers from some of the most horribly lame jokey dialog I've ever read. What was Coben thinking? If this is what passes for "witty banter" these days, the future of pop-lit is doomed. Other than that, the book is OK. Great action, an improbable plot, and supporting characters who are either completely stereotypical or feel like they belong in a cartoon. Like most modern thrillers, LONG LOST moves at a breathless pace. It feels a lot like one of...more
Reading a Harlan Coben novel is a bit like having another ride on your favourite roller coaster. It’s going to be fast moving with plenty of twists and turns and might make you laugh hysterically but essentially it will be the same as the last time you rode it. So here is this novel, the most recent of his that I have read, and here again is the missing female character, the is she/isn’t she dead scenario, and all the witty asides. And of course the omnipotent friend without whom Myron Bolitar w...more
This is my first Harlan Coben book and I'm not sure what to think. Well, I know what to think, how to think and thinking is something I like to do to keep me from watching reality TV. My opinion of this book, however, is rather undecided.
Myron seems like an interesting enough character, the character of Win is a scene stealer, and the mystery is interesting enough. About half-way through the book, the pace picks up and things change around a bit. Even so, I'm still left unsure as to whether I en...more

This book is equal in quality to prior Myron Bolitar books, and Win has less of a role than he has in a number of past books--which hopefully he will rake up and see that Myron cannot be left ot his own devices without getting into fairly complex trouble. This one has a rather far fetched plot line, with a long lost love recontacting him, just as he gets into deep trouble with his current significant other (for reasons that are a little unclear--these people react without talking about things, a...more
What sets this book apart from the previous Myron Bolitar books is the ending. At its conclusion the reader discovers that while Myron and Win thought they vanquished the evil forces at work, they have not. The last paragraph lets the reader in on the secret that sinister designs are still being carried out. I wonder if the next Bolitar novel will pick up where this one left off.
Is there anything he can't do? Myron Bolitar, boy wonder, kind, caring, sensitive, rescues damsels in distress and now, apparently, busts up terrorist cells populated by blonde-haired, blue-eyed wunderkinds. The only reason I gave it two stars is because I actually read it from cover-to-cover and didn't skip huge chunks of the book (okay, I may have skimmed over pages at a time, but I perused most of it...mostly). Without seeming too catty, I think Mr. Coben passed Laura Lippman's record of drop...more
1. Myron Bolitar hadn't heard from Terese Collins in years since their affair ended without explanation. One day she calls him from Paris saying she was in trouble and needed his help. When Myron arrives they find out that her ex husband was murdered and shes a prime suspect and together they overcome obstacles while tring to find out the truth.
2. I gave this book 3 stars because I liked the mystery of the plot, but didn't like this book as much as some of Harlan Cobens others.

I have read all of the Myron books and love the witty repartee and humor. The mysteries have gotten better over the years and this is the case with this one. The mystery involves digging up graves, Mosad, secret torture locations, and terrorists sleeper cells in America. It had much of the sarcasm I’ve always loved with the hard edge of today’s terrorism fears. The resolution of the book was creepy and on the surface, thought-provoking.

WOW.
I ended up having to re-read pages because I found myself reading as fast as I could just so I could get to the next page. This book runs full-throttle. It is not the best plot of the series, but you feel that you are on the edge of discovery with every page and chapter.
The plot itself is basically 'Myron Bolitar's International Adventure'. It kinda feels like a movie that has to one-up the movies that came before it, and the way to do that is to take the gang out of the country and to give...more

This is my second H.C. book, and although I enjoyed it, it took me a little longer to 'get into' than 'Tell no one'.
The story for me, didn't have an initial 'hook' that dragged me in; it was much more of a slower burner. It wasn't until the latter stages of the book where the pace picked up and the pages began to fly by.
Also, Myron Bolitar is a new character to me, and perhaps that is half the problem. He seems a bit of a cliche; a little too slick, a little too good-looking, a man who is in tou...more

I like Harlen Coben, and I've missed Myron Bolitar. Sure he and Win are an odd and unrealistic 'super hero duo,' but the books are just campy enough to enjoy. I think I liked this one a bit less for its reliance on the 'latest' gimmick - terrorism and torture. Too many series novels that have been about diverse and non-topical subjects - have veered into the popular culture by glomming on to torture, terrorism, and the West's fear of so-called Middle Eastern Muslim Fundamentalist terror. It's no...more

I hadn't read a Myron Bolitar book in a long time, so I was happy for this new one. Myron gets himself into another doozy of an adventure that takes him to Paris, London and of course NY and NJ.
Myron gets a frantic call from an old love (Terese) that takes him to see her in Paris. While there he gets beat up, shot, arrested a few times and caught in the middle of a murder investigation. His old friend Win is watching his back and supplying the types of help that only Win can. Terese, Myron and W...more

OK, I made it through this playaway...
The novel starts out super crappy and cliche, then it tugs you in close with an tight plot twist that makes the pretentious set-up seem to melt away.
