This book is my chicken bible. I used it to get started, find the right breed, raise my own chicks, build a coop, get my nesting boxes the right size, handle eggs properly, and even slaughter the extra roosters humanely (not with an ax!) and prep them for eating. Even after many years of raising chickens I still refer back to this book and loan it out to friends.

This guide really does cover, or at least touch on, pretty much everything you need to know to get started raising your own chickens. There are some topics that are not discussed in depth, but you can get enough information here to enable you to easily do further research online.
