This was absolutely fascinating, and reads more like an enthralling political drama than history. I had no idea how complex, how many different dynasties had ruled China over the centuries. I really liked this one, and it made me wish I'd taken more history classes in college. Highly recommended.

I originally read this at university and have just re-read it. It's full of insight and interesting perspectives, blending philosophy, military history, culture and social history - even if the author uses words such as 'barbarian' in ways that might be questioned had he written it today.

I read it first a long time ago. I've reread it at least once and may be due for another reading.
