Firstly I need to get out there how amazing this book truly was. I loved the atmosphere and the growing relationship between characters. When the first book left me wanting more I was glad to see that this one was as fastpassed and interesting. The story is beautiful and with a lot of action. I would like a little bit more witch fights, calling on the elements and stuff, a little bit more active magic and not so much of herbs and crystals. The ending was good but not so much fulfilling, it didn't left me wanting more or being extremely full, it just left me...
A good read for anyone, and I can't wait for the tv series this fall!

The story really picks up in the Captive Pt. 2 and The Power. While I was annoyed with how mousy Cassie was in the last two books, it was really nice to see her grow and become more confident in these ones. Still, the cheesyness of Diana’s character and blandness of Adam’s annoys me to no end. I seriously wanted Cassie to end up with Nick because he had more depth to him. In this story Cassie Blake is still a captive of Faye because she's being blackmailed. The coven is trying to control or get rid of the evil, dark power of the crystal black skull created by an original witch in 1696. They decide on Halloween to go to the school dance and leave early then go to the empty, burnt down lot on their street, Crowhaven, and call the dead. They did that but it wasn't successful. Ironically enough the witches were born days apart from each other in November through early December, except for Cassie who was born on July 23rd. They have a witchy birthday party for the boys. And soon after the coven had to meet to decide who the leader of the coven would be. At first the leader was the beautiful Diana, but her cousin Faye challenged her leadership. Cassie was being blackmailed to vote for Faye. I won't give away who was voted leader, but soon after the vote they all went to the cemetery with the crystal black skull and tried to harness the power. It was unsuccessful and released a menacing figure and an eerie red light devoured Cassie's house. There she found her mother dazed and confused and her grandmother near death with a black figure standing over her. Several of the witches used magic to get rid of the red light and the black figure. Cassie's grandmother tells them the story of Black John and his evil agenda. She gives Cassie her family's Book of Shadows and tells Cassie to be brave and that she has the power to stop Black John. A thrilling segment of the story and an extremely easy read.

The Power:
The story begins with Faye revealing to her cousin, Diana, the secret Cassie had been trying to hide. No longer could Faye blackmail Cassie, but Cassie is distraught by her betrayal of Diana. Diana forgives Cassie. A love triangle is involved here. They discover that Black John can magically reincarnate himself from the grave. And the last time he reincarnated, he killed most of the current coven's parents because they figured out his diabolical plans. He had them all get married and have children all around the same time. He wanted a full circle of witches he could control. He didn't count on Kori and Cassie being born. The coven decides to question their older relatives and comb their Books of Shadows in order to find a way to stop Black John from his diabolical plans and killing more people. Cassie goes to school and discovers a girl she met at Cape Cod before moving to New Salem, Portia, has enrolled in her high school. Portia and her brothers are witch hunters. Cassie discovers that someone has stolen her special stone, hematite. And the coven doesn't know who it was. At Cassie's grandmother's funeral she meets the new Principal, Jack Brunswick. And that's when Cassie realizes he's Black John. Cassie and Nick decide to become an item, although Nick knows she's in love with someone else. Someone she can't have. Cassie gets clues from her dreams. Her family is the most powerful and has the gift of clear sight. Black John used to live in the now burnt down house on Crowhaven Road, number 13. Cassie's mother is really sick since the reappearance of Black John and the older witches in town are taking care of her and trying to cure her. Faye who is now the coven leader has decided to team up with Black John. The coven decide they need to find the original master tools to defeat Black John. Jack Brunswick, as Principal, decides to target the coven members by issuing a list of prohibited activities that are punishable; the worst one being sent to his office. All the outsiders are hypnotized by him and are gratified that the coven no longer has special privileges. The girls decide to do a special magical ritual for the night of Hecate, a goddess of witches. When the ceremony is over, they instruct Cassie, the newest initiate to bury a box somewhere she'll remember, but to not look inside the box, to which she complies. The coven decides to use amethyst crystals to protect them from psychic attack by Black John. The Principal had set up medieval stocks in the cafeteria to place those who get punished in. Cassie got sent to the Principal's office. Nick and the others decide to create a diversion outside the school to save Cassie from Black John. After Cassie is saved, Faye rereads the true identity of Black John and Cassie is floored and horrified by what she discovers. The coven realized that only the original master tools can stop Black John. So Cassie uses a moonstone under her pillow so she could have dreams that will help them discover where the master tools are. Lucky for her it worked and they found the master tools. But the following day Cassie is kidnapped by the witch hunters. But the coven saved her just in time. Then the coven discovers who among them has been influenced by Black John and had been committing the murders involuntarily with no recollection. Black John was using hematite to control this person. The coven realizes that on the eclipse the next week, Black John is planning something diabolical. The coven decide to lie low until then when they will counter-attack. On that day Black John decides to take out the bridge from the mainland because a major storm is rolling through, a storm he is controlling using magic. Since Faye isn't around the coven decides to elect a new leader. I won't tell you who they voted for. But the new leader has to use the master tools to defeat Black John and stop the storm from killing everyone in New Salem. The showdown is at Black John's old house, number 13. I won't tell you if they defeat Black John or how they attempted to do it. At the end of the story the coven decided to have three leaders, a triumvirate. And in the end, the messy love triangle is resolved, but I won't give it away. A great book and an easy read.(less)

Review: Sixteen-year-old Cassie is furious when she is forced to move from sunny California to a dilapidated old house in the middle of nowhere – all for a grandmother she never has never known. After a week of humiliation by the school bully, she meets Diana, who introduces her to the group of friends that “rule” the school. She is drawn to Diana’s beauty and concern and they become fast friends. She often feels like she is part of their group, but is excluded from some secret, which turns out to be that they are all witches, even Cassie. Cassie is quickly initiated.

In The Captive, the Circle is beset by dark forces-from the skull Adam dug out.
The whole group must cooperate if they want to fight this powerful magic. Meanwhile, Adam and Cassie become very close, and they admit to their mutual love, but decide to keep quiet about it. In the third part of the Secret Circle series, Faye is enraptured by the power of the skull is determined to have it all to herself. She blackmails Cassie into getting it for her, while slowly influencing many of the members to side with her instead of Diana. She thus cheats her way to head of the Circle. With Faye as leader, the Circle breaks into chaos. The spirit in the skull is revealed to have enormous power, but by the end, shy, quiet Cassie leads the group to the defeat of Black Johm.

Overall, I liked the first book well enough. It’s the kind of book you would read in one sitting. It definitely drew me in
and held my interest, and I couldn’t wait to get the sequel, but I’d probably forget it pretty soon if it weren’t for the coming TV show. I was dissatisfied with a couple of things: 1) The tests to join the Circle are treated as if they were a big deal, but if I recall correctly, all Cassie had to do was not have fear in her heart (LOL!) and step into the Circle with the dagger to her throat. This was the proclaimed “tests”. Not that big a deal.

Another thing that seemed incomprehensible is that these two (Adam and Cassie) are teenagers and together for no more than twenty minutes, and they’re in love? That’s a bit ridiculous, don’t you think, even with magic? I say it’s the raging hormones. Lol. I thought the characters were well-developed, but the physical characterization was a little too obvious. White for purity, and black for evil - it’s as if the author is punching you with a great big “DUH”. But it's all good because Faye (the evil one) redeems herself in the end. Woot!

Lastly, I am a tiny bit disappointed that it is being made into a TV show. For one, scriptwriters take the book and do crazy things with just to keep it going, which usually degrades the actual thing. And secondly, if you wanted to start yet another paranormal TV show, why this one? Why not Richelle Mead’s series? Why not something by Lauren Kate, Amber Kizer, Melissa de la Cruz, or even Maggie Stiefvater? This book is perfectly average compared to other books of the same genre. Just because one series has produced a hit doesn’t mean you should jump on board with every series produced by that author.

I enjoyed the second book much better than the first one. Now that the first had set the pace, this one got to be filled with many of the action moments, which I enjoyed immensely. One thing that hasn’t changed since book 1 is its predictability. I could guess the skull’s relationship to Cassie by the end of the first book, and it is obvious she will be voted leader and will fix everything (she is, after all, the protagonist). At the end of the day, I like the message this book sends to girls, but plot and narration have a lot more work to do if they want to reach out to a wider audience. With that said, the book series and its author has its own set of fans, and I totally respect and support that.

Everyone I knew was talking about this book series and how great it was, it was all over the internet and there were a lot of positive reviews written about it in the local library so I wondered what the big fuss was and picked them up. And now I am hooked.

Once I started reading the first one I couldn't put that one down and read through the night finishing at 5 am. But it was worth it.So then I couldn't wait to read the second one and picked it up as soon as I can.

I went straight onto this one when I finished the first book.
Cassie is now part of The Circle but things are getting more dangerous. The Captive is actually my favourite out of the series, things seem to move forward more, the characters develop and the plot is better paced. The story is still predictable, but there is enough magic and intrigue to keep you wanting to read.
The Power is a great conclusion to the book and leaves you with a satisfying ending.

The conclusion to the series. Kind of had different thoughts about both books. So 'The Captive: Part 2"....more continuation of the doubtful, "am I worthy to be part of the group" crap from Cassie. She's still under the influence of Faye and that part of the storyline annoys me. But, there is more revealed about Black John and that whole story so the plot is still getting moved forward. I absolutely loved this series! It was a great follow through to the first volume. L.J. Smith has wonderful character development and gives the reader plenty of twists and surprises. I love that we get to see more of Nick in this volume. Also, Cassie's character really grows up and takes the lead as a heroine.

I must say that this book drew me in from the start. I didn't enjoy part one and two that much but I was absolutely hooked on part 4 and 5! Cassie is such a strong character. She learns more about herself and the coven she has joined in such interesting ways. For some reason I found it funny that Faye's nail varnish changed according to how good or bad she is. I kept seeing an email of a girl taking time to change her nail colour - such an unimportant thing to be doing really!

Cassie has to make an impossible decision to choose either Diana or Faye. If Cassie chose’s Diana things will be how they are now, nothing will change. If Cassie chose’s Faye it will be for all the wrong reasons. If Cassie doesn’t choose Faye then, Faye will tell Diana what Cassie and Adam did behind Diana’s back, but that can‘t happen because it would crush Diana. Overall I liked it, but I found it hard to like any of the characters aside from Nick. He was the only one that held my interest from beginning to end. I did manage to warm up to Diana and a few other characters, but Cassie bugged me ever since book one and continued to bug me throughout "The Captive, Part 2." When we last saw Cassie, she was essentially being blackmailed by Faye, in an attempt to not hurt Diana with the secret of her forbidden relationship with Adam. This one picks up right where the last one left off, since they essentially split the middle book in the trilogy in two for the different omnibus editions.

I really liked this book series. The captive part 2 and the power was a wonderful continuation from where the first book left off. Cassie is still trying to decide whether she is on Faye's side or not, and she is also trying to solve the murders that have been happening since they dug up the crystal skull.

In these volumes of the story Cassie convinces the group to talk to their elders and find out what's really going on. Comes up with a plan and learns to stand up for herself/take charge. Most of the story is very different from the show but you can kind of see where things came from.

I do think that Smith's characters are just too black and white. Everyone comes across as all the way good or all the way bad. Even those from the group that appear to be "bad" come off more as good guys with chips...more
